DIY Concrete & Reclaimed Beam Bench || how to build

This episode shows how to build a DIY concrete bench from a reclaimed wood beam and a GFRC concrete base. The reclaimed wood is stabilized with epoxy resin.
Check out the new slim fit clothing from DULUTH TRADING!
bit.ly/DuluthTr...
This DIY reclaimed wood bench with GFRC concrete base could also be used as a concrete coffee table. I’m really happy with the shape of the concrete base, which inlays with a cutout in the reclaimed wood beam. I think the white epoxy resin filling the crack in the wood beam is a perfect complement to the dark concrete base. The concrete is stained black with India ink, and then sealed with an acrylic concrete sealer. The woodworking skills required to cut the cavity in the reclaimed beam are suprisingly DIY-friendly.

the design is awesome but I disagree on the industrial requirements of roughness. I think the wood part would benefit greatly from more refinement. I'd straighten the surfaces more, chamfer the edges and coat the whole thing in multiple layers of linseed oil polishing it with 600-1000 grit in between. Sure it would take weeks and a lot of oil and it would smell very bad in the mean time but it would match the much more refined concrete base :D

To remove air bubbles from the concrete in a small project like this, do it the way the pros do on the bigger jobs: vibrate it. Use your inexpensive orbital jitterbug (or DA) sander gently against the side of your form. One or two seconds is all it takes. You'll be amazed how well it works.

Only two things I would have done differently... Instead of epoxy, I would have filled the crack with concrete. (Though if the was yellow, the crack would be too, then you could not have changed to black. It would look awesome with black concrete in the crack though.) And I would NOT have glued the wood to the base. BOTH are pretty heavy, together they are probably horridly heavy. And since the wood sits squarely on the base with little extending past the ends, it would have been safe with a few dabs of silicone as friction stops on the wood to keep it from slipping front to back. Really great design though, and I love how it looks!

Yes, a bit of reinforcement, and prevents cracking

1. I have been there, mold preparation not sufficiently sting enough due to new product altercations and at the very fin moment, shit happens.... 2. I would have clamped melamine or plastic guides on either side of the beveled hugw notch out and than used a extra tall blade on reciprocating saw to guide along making sure blade touches both guides on either end. 3. Your videos are getting better and better Well done mate

Thanks brother! good idea to basically make a mini chainsaw mill with a reciprocating saw!

Really like it a lot! Black was a much better choice.

I think you could be on to something new for sink base designs 🤷‍♀️

If that concrete was so strong why would you be adding those fiber pieces?

This is one of your better projects, base of bench is awesome, very architectural! IMHO some dark epoxy would look better then that white one, but ok, that is just matter of opinion/taste! Great job! And yes, good thing form start to fall apart so you switched to black stain for concrete xD

Thanks Igor! I debated for a bit between white and black epoxy, and agree, both would look good! 👍👍

Was the failure due to re-using the melamine? Could there have been some paste or release agent remaining on the surface that caused the hot glue to not hold as well?

Great design and build. I would have gone with black epoxy to fill the top cracks, but -- hey -- it's not my build. It's all good. Thanks!

Concrete and a thick wooden beam? Looks a bit flimsy to me... How much does it weigh? Also, orange concrete and orange-y beam - definitely turned out better with contrasting colors!

This thing is a tank ;) it's about 150 lbs...when I jump around on it at the end you can see how strong it is.

👍🏻👍🏻 it looks masculine, obviously strong & I'm sure this beam bench will be durable for many more years ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Sorry to say, I HATE the white epoxy color... wouldn't tan/brown to blend into the wood or even black to match the base look WAY better ?
@modustrial
@modustrial 4 года назад
Yup, just a matter of taste, don't think there is a right or wrong here. Personally, I love the white, but can see how others would like black or a dark color.

While i like the project and it looks good i would like to point something out, being in construction and going to school for civil engineering. The whole talk about brand of concrete and the strength compared to quick crete it only in comparison, also the strength come from the aggregate mix with the portland cement. The amount of water used when you mix the concrete(to much water will make concrete weak). As someone that try to give a plug to a company that sponsors you is great, please do some reading on it and how you can achieve the same cheaper then buying some exotic concrete mix.
@modustrial
@modustrial 4 года назад
Fishstone provides recipes to make your own mix, buying the Portland cement and sand locally, if you like. Having done quite a bit of expirementation and research, i can assure that the mix makes a difference. If youd like to know more, check out the instructable I wrote. There is a lot more to it than just using less water. www.instructables.com/id/GFRC-Floating-Concrete-Hearth-for-Concrete-Wood-Fi/

From the design point of view, the inner fillets should be followed by the external ones on some points, would've looked much better. good effort though!

Thanks! I tried that in fusion, and liked the sharp outside with curved inside better, but, that's just my taste. I could definitely see how others could prefer having symmetry :)
