I am definitely going to be using this idea but for a larger bin, but for the zip ties I would put it to where they tie on the outside rather the inside of the bin like you have it just so that the snake doesn't end up rubbing against those and possibly causing injury.
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 месяца назад
I did soften the edges inside, forgot to mention that part. I usually use kitty nail clippers to cut them. If you do it at the right angle, it leaves a rounded edge

A soldering iron to melt holes for the zip ties would prevent the rough edges in the inside. That's what I use for making rat transport bins

I wanted to make it so easy that anyone can do this, and could have those basic things handy for this build. Not everyone has a soldering iron 🙃

I took an old dresser and turned it upside down, knocked out the slats that held the shelves and put a piece of plexiglass on the front and waterproofed the inside. It made a huge enclosure that I also used as a stand for a 55 gal aquarium.

This is awesome and gives me an idea for my tubs, I want to do this for the tops. I have a CHE on my tubs and would love to just be able to flip up the front part instead of taking the entire damn top off every time. Having a hinged front would be perfect to just flip up like a car hood and close when I am done.

@tinaleighton6390

I really like this. But I do have one concern. I've learned from using zip ties on other projects that when you cut them off they can be extremely sharp. So having the cut off part of the zip tie inside the enclosure might cause a hazard for the snake. I think I would have the cut off part on the outside. It wouldn't look as good but it would be safer for the snake. I guess you could also melt the edge a little bit to make it less sharp also. But this is a great project.
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 года назад
I have not left any sharp edges inside. I find the best tool to cut plastic zip ties is cat nail clippers.

Is it possible and feasible for the snake to extend one tub system to another by attaching pvc pipes between the 2 tubs with joles on sides? Have you ever done this or seen someone doing it? Just looking at options for making a tub system longer for when the snakes grows out of the tub? #ballpython
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 месяца назад
I've seen it done, but i personally don't like the hamster cage aesthetic it gives lol I'm currently designing a tree tub topper to extend height and use the tubs as just a base for a paludarium
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 месяца назад
Ball pythons do great in the 70 gallon black and yellow totes, they are just a couple inches from a 4x2x2! The tree tubs are 55"x24x15, that's ample space for even a large adult female ball python! The sides are somewhat clear tho, so you'll have to clutter it up or do a background, that would be cool!

Super great and helpful video! Was it difficult to score the cutout with just a box cutter? I'm not very strong so worried that it won't come out straight compared to using a power tool.
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 года назад
I've tried using a Dremel in the past and it gets too hot and starts to melt the edges and they come out super uneven. I've discovered that scoring it seems to be the safest way to get a straight edge without damaging the material. It's not difficult you just got to have a steady enough hand so that you're going over the same Groove, cutting deeper as you go.

That varies depending on what size tub you use 😊 Up to 30 gals you can use 1/8" plexi, but 40 and over should be at least 3/16 so it's not as bendy👍

Thanks for the nice video. I love the details you gave us. I just got 2 questions. 1 What are the dimentions of the tub? 2. What heating do you use and did you place it inside the tub or outside?
@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 4 года назад
I never place heating elements inside a tub where my animal would have direct contact. I'm using a 7W 11" heat mat with integrated rheostat to the outside on one end. The tub is 3x2 at the wider point, at the bottom its 32" x 20". This design can be used with any heavy duty tub of any size. I recommend one which has a strong lid that latches firmly all the way around.

@MotherTruckinReptiles
@MotherTruckinReptiles 3 месяца назад
Gorilla glue is just for the Acrylic side. Most adhesives don't stick to the tubs (hot glue would be better) The threads in a screw, along with door movement can crack the plexiglass and will eventually wear down the plastic, making the hole bigger and eventually comes loose.

@fireinateacup89 Год назад
A lot of people are wondering about heating, so I thought I'd share my tactic for heating a tub (specifically for a Ball Python): The way I heat my tub enclosure like this is to cut a large circle out of what will be the "warm end" of the tub lid (it should be at least 1-1/2" wider than the diameter of your heat lamp, so there is no risk of the lamp touching the plastic and causing a fire hazard). After that, you can cut (with heavy duty pliers) and attach chicken wire over the hole in the lid using a heavy duty glue or other adhering device. (I haven't perfected this yet, honestly. I tried using Gorilla Glue gun glue but it didn't hold, so I then stripped that and am using Gorilla Glue TAPE. However, I have to keep pressing it down as it keeps unsealing from the plastic of the lid...definitely not ideal! But if you can figure out a way to secure the chicken wire to the plastic lid, you're golden.) (*Make sure you attach the wire on top of the lid rather than under it. I know it doesn't look as nice, but the wire has sharp edges and unless you can cover them, it is safer to adhere it on top). Once you've attached the chicken wire, you can either place the heat lamp on top of the wire mesh, or hang it so it suspends directly above the opening you've made. :)

Been using these for several years and several species and the only escape was because I messed up putting on the door and didn't think it was gonna be an issue lol So I had to fix that just by adding another "lock" where the little gap was.. You shouldn't immediately shun something without trying it first. The snakes are very very content in their tubs 😊
