DIY Covid-19 Fabric Mask (with Filter Pocket) Sewing Tutorial

This tutorial is inspired by Dr Chen Guanting's post on fabric masks: health.gvm.com...
**** PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU PROCEED ****
1. While fabric masks will not offer the full protection of a surgical mask, regular fabric masks (referring to ones without filter pockets) have shown to be able to capture at least 50% of 0.02 micron Bacteriophage MS2 particles (5 times smaller than the coronavirus). Source: smartairfilter...
2. CDC has recommended homemade masks (referring to the ones without filter pocket) when medical grade PPE supplies are exhausted. Source: www.cdc.gov/co...
3. As part of efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19, China, Taiwan, HK have encouraged universal mask-wearing (ie, not just for the sick). Czech Republic has also followed suit-- in the words of the Mayor of Prague: "Whether you have medical masks, self-made masks, or use a scarf, anything is better than nothing.” Source: www.praguemorn...
4. Some hospitals in the US have asked the public to sew fabric masks for them due to shortage of surgical masks. We encourage all sewists who would like to contribute to first check with your local healthcare providers on whether they would need/accept fabric masks. For example, in Taiwan hospitals they do not encourage the use of fabric masks (take note that they also do not have a shortage on surgical masks). If you are making them for a hospital in need, make them with these filter pockets as an extra protection barrier.
Dr Chen Guanting advises on his Facebook post that if you're not actually sick, a fabric mask will suffice as a form of general protection, as long as there is a non-woven layer inside the mask. The non-woven layer acts as a filter.
What can you use for the non-woven layer? The easiest material would be gauze from the pharmacy (non woven), dried out wet wipes (unscented), or brand new polyester floor wipes (dry ones).
Dr Chen recommends the following:
Wash fabric masks daily
Replace non-woven layer with a fresh one-- do not reuse!
Do not wear masks if you have respiratory illnesses
Save the surgical masks for medical professionals who are on the front line of healthcare, and use them only when you need to
Washing your hands often-- it's more important than wearing a mask.
Please read our full blog post to understand what a fabric mask CAN and CANNOT do for you: www.makershabi...

Nice tutorial! It's great that it has a filter pocket and a front/back side in different colors. One tip for people making them: something that has really helped me with getting the pleats evenly spaced is folding the middle one over first, since it's easier to judge where the middle is rather than 1/3 of the way, then doing the other two.

bcgobraves i also use a grid cutting mat to fold on and start with the first pleat one inch from the top. Then I add two more pleats. When pleated then the width measures 3.25” for the adult and 2.5” on the kids. I use the 2” grid cutting mat to always keep within these measurements. So helpful 💖 been making this mask pattern for 4 weeks and about 450 completed so far.

Best description I have seen so far, thanks! :-) I added a wire channel. At 0:30 in the video I sewed a 1.5 cm buttonhole 2 cm from the side and 1 cm alongside the top of one of the linings. At 1:25 I temporarily put in the wire using the buttonhole and pressed the wire to the upper side. Sewed a channel with a one sided zipper foot close to the wire. Took out the wire and continued. I used 2 mm plastic coated garden wire.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know I watched your video back in March when our city had just gone into quarantine and there were no masks available anywhere. I made some for my family and posted it on my social and ended up getting orders.. we then moved into masks being mandatory and I got furloughed at the same time. I ended up selling masks to supplement my pay since I wasn’t working and made nearly $4000 in one and a half months. Thank you! I am no longer making them since they are available everywhere and I am back to work, but they helped me when I needed it the most!

Forgot - I used a sheet with a 1,000 thread count per inch for the inside pieces and batik fabric for the outside fabric (I quilt). Batik is a very tightly densly woven fabric. Making them for some neighbors who are immunocompromised. Made a bunch of another pattern and quilt - too much work. LOVE this pattern. These won't keep the virus away, but protect your nose and mouth from others sneezing and coughing. However, I'm staying in and have been in 3 weeks and 2 days. But when the day comes when they say all is well,to go out again, I'm wearing the mask till I KNOW it's over - til fall.

@@17143972290 And I'm not even sure if it's going to go away at all. . By the way, I have a crazy neighbor who came by yesterday and told me that China did this to us by shooting something in the air to drop all over the whole earth to cause this. As I say I have a crazy neighbor. I asked her why they would want to do this to their own economy and got the answer that " oh China is fine. all that's a lie they've been fine no people have died there." All I know is that making masks for other people has brightened my own day and made me feel useful during this time. I'm a widow who lives alone and have been doing extremely well, surprising even myself, during this isolation time. And I know that it's making things for other people and helping them that is helping me along the way. I just pray that we all come out the other end of this eventually as better more caring, more appreciative people and more sensitive to other people's needs and cultures. I'm asking a lot but that's my prayer

This was a great tutorial! The mask was pretty easy to make. I need to work on my pleats and think that starting with the middle pleat first is a good suggestion. I did not have elastic but had parachute cord (made it 60 inches long). This is better than the elastic around the ear and easier than making ties. I am not very good a sewing so I needed easy. I put a loop at one end to go around your neck so it hangs in front of you. Then you can pull up the free ends (that are knotted) to cinch it pretty tightly and tie it around your head. It works well. For filters, I am using a shop towel folded in half and cut to size. Thanks so much for this easy to follow video!

Use a sheet with a 1,000 thread count per inch for the inside pieces and batik fabric for the outside fabric (I quilt). Batik is a very tightly woven fabric. They won't fully keep the virus away, but they can protect your nose and mouth from others sneezing and coughing. Be aware they are unless if you don't wash this mask after every use, the mask will contain viruses and therefore will be useless to you even if you replace the center fabric. Boil water and pour in a cup and put the mask in for 5 minutes, this will kill any viruses and then hang to air dry. Also, practice removing your mask by detaching from your ears, don't touch the front of your mask to remove from face. Also, consider wearing protective eyeglasses that wrap around your face to protect from the virus entering through your eyes. Covering your mouth and nose is useless if your eyes are exposed.

@@shantellzeigler555 There is so much info out there - some good and some not so good. I found this link to be helpful. smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/ My daughter (who is in the health care industry) advised me that these homemade masks are good for helping to protect others from your germs... not vice versa. But if everyone is wearing them - obviously it will help reduce transmission. I haven't worn a mask out yet, but plan to this coming week. I've been making masks out of 100 % cotton tshirts. If I do add a liner, I might try a piece of a hepa vacuum cleaner bag, an additional piece of cotton, maybe a doubled piece of a cotton tea towel or perhaps a piece of cotton or paper towel, soaked in salt water then dried www.businessinsider.com/mask-coated-in-salt-neutralizes-viruses-like-coronavirus-2020-2 as I've read that salt coated masks can help neutralize the virus. you need to be able to breath with them on, so I'm not sure which option will work best yet. Please read up and decide for yourself. Please be aware, to reduce the possibility of becoming infected, each time you wear a mask like this, you should not be touching it, readjusting it as you wear, so you will not be touching trapped germs. Also, when you get home, you should take it off by the elastic ear bands (being careful not to handle the outer main section) and immediately disinfect by submerging it in boiling water, like another reviewer recommended. Then maybe laundering as usual. That's what I'm planning to do. I don't think the hepa vacuum cleaner bag material would be able to reused, so using that for the filter would be a one time thing. If you are making any kind of mask for someone else, I would completely disinfect the mask after making and place in a ziploc bag with thoroughly disinfected hands. This is all new to most of us and we're doing the best we can. Hope some of these links are helpful to you. Sending positive vibes out there for you all to stay or get healthy and hoping for this to be over soon.
@kathybiagi
@kathybiagi 4 года назад
P.s. Tip for those of you that don't have elastic - I used pieces cut from a good pair of tights. The material doesn't fray and is very comfortable. I'm guessing after repeated uses, you'll have to tie new knots to retighten.

I'm making these masks for a desperate nursing home in Kansas. Instead of elastic, I'm using 1/4" twill tape for ties. Durable, washable and quick! Before I sew the end seam, I tuck the long piece of twill tape into the seam, then sew the seam closed. Saves me the extra step of having to pull it through a casing. Long enough for top and bottom tie on even large heads. Twill gets tacked in the seam so it won't pull out. I add a simple knot at the raw end. Because I'm sewing in bulk, I bought large spools of twill tape from Amazon. Very cost effective when purchased this way.

Hi Denise. I’m not too sure about that since coffee filters are made of paper. You may use a non-woven layer as the filter (this can be dried out wet wipes, non woven gauze from pharmacy, or simple dry sweeper wipes) Hope it helps!
@mrsbenn1
@mrsbenn1 4 года назад
@Denise: Another thing that some are using for filters are a portion of a 'blue shop towel' that is disposable and used often by mechanics etc. That said; another idea you may like to try is 'FREEZER PAPER' that is coated on one side which repels moisture, can be found in most grocery stores and is used for storage of raw meats, poultry and fish. It is very durable, can be cut easily, relatively cheap plus disposable however a word of caution as to its use; since a paper you might experience breathing difficulty as not all lung capacities are equal.

Don’t know about u guys but here in 🇵🇷 everything is closed and you can’t find any specific filter. Im using 3 paper coffee filters to make due with extra large white Hanes T-shirts material, bought biggest pack. (Wash T-shirts material after cutting.). I cut a square the size of a large bandana, folded it in half placing 3 coffee filters inside in the middle and a twist tie inside the fold right in middle also. Fold it in half again and on the two sides insert an elastic round ponytail tie. Fold the corners inward towards the middle and insert one corner into the other. Thats it. This wasn’t my idea i had seen it on youtube. I simply added the twist tie to adjust it to your nose tightly and the coffee filters as protection. This is a fast mask and reusable. You have a bucket with water, detergent and bleach ready and upon arrival drop it in and soak for a day or two. No sewing and everything’s reusable. Hope this helps; it’s better than nothing. Pro and cons. This pattern is nice and roomy and the inside and outside are different fabrics. It's pretty simple to make. There is an OVERLAP of the opening for the insert, which is terrific. - Probably the biggest drawback given the shortage of elastic is that it uses almost a 2 feet of elastic per mask. If you sew elastic on a mask instead of looping it, you can use 1 foot per mask. If you have plenty of elastic for your needs, then that's ok but if you're making masks in bulk, this may not be for you. - Con is that the sides, with their double fold, are a little bulky and do not lay that flat against the cheeks. Instead of two equal folds, I'm going to make the first hem small the second wider (along the sides.) and see if that helps. (Actually I ended up pressing, stitching then zigzagging the side edges to avoid a double fold.) - Another con is that when you pleat the fabric, they show you clipping the sides to hold in place, but this does nothing to hold the BACK in place. I recommend just pleating, iron, pleat iron, then sew without clips. EASY! - Finally instead of pulling elastic through with a pin (difficult), you can lay the elastic in there before you sew the sides, as long as you are careful not to sew the elastic. - You can sew a little channel at the top to put a wire in to hold flat against the nose.
@laurenmichelledeufel
@laurenmichelledeufel 4 года назад
Or Instead of the safety pin, I made a long piece of wire into a giant “sewing needle” (an unfolded paper clip would do fine). Make the wire straight, but with a thin loop at the end and put the elastic thru that. Then feed the wire and elastic thru the mask.
@CR-vk9py

I found it a lot easier to place the elastic in position first then hand stitch the final turn - a much neater job I thought!

It makes it SO much easier to pin your fabric to them and cut quickly. 2) Make your elastics at least 9-9 1/2" long each. Tie knot loosely so user can tighten if needed. After getting the correct length, the user can push the knot around and shove inside of the side of the mask to hide it. 3) Never touch the fabric after going out in public. Pull the mask off from around the ears, holding only the elastic. Wash immediately in warm soapy water and air dry if possible. 4) Use NON-WOVEN filters inside. I just used unscented baby wipes that I let dry before inserting into the filter pocket. Hope this helps!

This is one type of mask Docs and Nurses are asking for. But many are asking sewers to use a piece of flannel for inside. You guys, the masks will be washed often so please pre-shrink fabrics before cutting. Flannel shrinks MORE than your regular cotton, the mask will distort. Thanks from a quilter (retired nurse). Might be a good idea to leave tied ends out so elastic can be adjusted to fit the face size.

Hello Deb, thank you for sharing that information, it's great to hear from healthcare professionals like yourself. Agree on the elastic knots being left outside to be adjusted. Or they can also be replaced with fabric straps. Take care!

My husband is a retired surgeon and wanted ties and NOT Ear Loops. Ties allow one adjust the tightness of the mask, which is suppose to be worn tight. However, I prefer Ear Loops because I don't like tying them around my hair. Ear Loops works for someone who isn't wearing a mask for long periods of time and I wear them looser than my husband. Which is probably a NO NO.

The filter layer of medical mask is "meltblown fabric". You can buy from a lot of places online.

DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF!!!! There is a global shortage of meltblown fabric and it needs to be used by hospitals for surgeries and intubations, not just going to the grocery. Stay far enough away from people and the virus should never be inhihj enough concentration that you’d need this level of filtration.

PS - it’s extremely costly to produce, a machine is several million euro and they take months to produce new machines. China is working on it presently.

Totoally agree, Joanna--each pleat was an annoying road block. After fighting with several I decided not to pleat at all. I sewed the side channels and threaded a 45" shoelace through them, then I gather the mask at each side as I wear it.

@Surreyian: Check your tension for the feed dogs on your sewing machine also depending upon the fabric you are using experiment with the the stitching length. Hopes this helps.

Use a 24 inch piece of elastic, cut in 2.
@makershabitatkl36
@makershabitatkl36 4 года назад
Hello Christine, this depends on the elasticity of the elastic itself. If your elastic is very stretchy, you can start with 30cm of elastic for each piece. If your elastic isn't very stretchy, start with 35cm instead. Once you tie the elastics, try it on and adjust it if you need to. Then you'll know what length you need best. This is the beauty of sewing your own masks! :) Take care xx

I made 2 of these masks. You inspired me to take out my sewing machine, which had about and inch of dust on it. This mask fits perfectly around my face. As far as filters, I cut up my HEPA vacuum bags. It filters out 99.97% of bacteria, pollen, dust, dander, mold and so on. Thank you for this tutorial!!!

A nurse here says that HEPA bags are dangerous, because they have tiny particles that can get in your lungs and cause permanent damage.
