Hello Erica I live in England and lost my job and financial security due to covid. I made one of these mask for my very poorly dad and then someone else asked for one and it took off! I have now made over 1000 for people across the globe and stopped myself getting into dept, it has turned into my job. I have you and this tutorial to thank for. It was so easy to follow. The wonder clips are a must! But it does take me 15 mins per mask. Thank you Erica, so much! X
I've been watching a lot of these mask tutorials over the past few days, trying to decide which style of mask construction seems the best to me so that I can make a choice and get going. I just want to say that your mask style is probably the best in that it comes together quickly and includes a middle layer. But more importantly, YOU are the best teacher by far. I love that you don't waste time chattering or trying to be funny, but just get right down to business and move through the instructions steadily and swiftly. Instructions were also very easy to understand. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I feel confident that I know what to do now.
I too have been looking at and testing out patterns. This pattern and video are the best I could find as well. The instructions were easy to understand.
I followed this pattern and made about 30 masks, they’re gone fast. Donated to nurses and elderly in the area. I love to sew and Thank you so much for sharing🙏🏻 God bless !
Well done! I am starting to make them too but I am having problems, when I see the last bit some stitches are skipped while going over the folds. I presume it's a bit thick for my machine. Is anyone else having that problem?
I'm a nurse and we were thinking if need be we could wear these over our N95 mask and take them off after patient contact and donn a new fabric mask over the top again. This would prolong the use of the N95 masks. We would deposit the fabric masks throughout the day in a bio-hazard bag for laundering. We'd go through a lot, but they would be re-usable!
I haven't sewed in 10 years. Dusted off my Singer and started making these. One hour for the first, 30 min for the second and now I'm cranking them out 10 min/mask. Very easy to understand video. She is clear and explains it very well. Thank you! I love the Wonder Clip idea!
Best tutorial I've seen. I didn't have to yell, "Wait! Slow down, lady!" like I do on every. knitting. video. ever. (usually with swear words too). Thanks for that! I'm going to give this mask method a try, even though I haven't sewn anything in a decade.
Mary, are you in San Francisco? This is Marie Mallon! I'm sewing masks with the ear elastic and I need some advice. My pattern says to use 7" elastic on each side but that appears way to big???
This is the best tutorial. Started making these masks in march, ended up making over 80 for family, friends & pupils. She's great to listen to, clear & concise with her instruction, and the finished result is fab! Thank you so much for keeping us all busy & safe. Bless you 😇
My wife is starting to make some today. Her niece was making some and gave her a heads up on where to look for tutorial. We were just in fabric shop in central Illinois yesterday and ICU nurse was in there buying material for that purpose. They say you can sew pipe cleaners into the area around your nose. Thanks for the tutorial.
I've been making similar mask but with three layers. Made a pocket insert for s coffee filter. Obviously it's not same protection as N95 but it's pretty good to have extra padding against other germs.
I'm making these as a donation for hospitals & for our church members. And anyone who I might come in contact with who would want one. It's a blessing to help out our community.
@@ApricotFlowers i am looking for cloth and I find cotton twill but it seems to heavy/thick for quilting, will that work? any suggestions what other fabrics to use?
I work at a gas station/convenience shop. A customer is making some for all 10 of us at the store! Thank you for showing this! Be safe & healthy all around!
You are spreading a false idea about medical masks. This is NOT a medical mask. A medical mask is not just three layers of fabric. Recommendation: before top stitching, put a small wire (bread tie, unbent paper clip, pipe cleaner, floral wire 3-4"long ) down close to the original seam (the 1/4" seam allowance without pressing it open leaves a channel) then "stitch in the ditch" close to the wire so that it is sealed between the original seam and the top stitch around it. Existing masks can be "retrofitted" with this method. The wire improves the mask to make it easier to breath through, fit more comfortably, and seal out more germs.
@@alexandrialipton1843 I sewed first seam, then put the pipe cleaner up against that seam on the inside after turning right side out and before I stitched the lsat opening. Then I stitched under it to hold on place.
Wow, I'm so glad I looked this up. My mamaw, who passed 09/09 last year, was a huge arts and crafts enthusiast. She sewed little summer dresses every year for Hati. Now I am 36, been 20 years since almost 30 years since l used a sewing machine, but I'm a fast learner. And if I can start churning these out in five minutes, then as my mamaw would say, "You done a good job there." I feel so worried for our first responders, for families not able to visit their sick relative, to individuals dying suddenly, alone on top of that and then if you're lucky a graveside service of a few. So to anyone out there, working the front lines, donating your time and money, I salute you! Know I pray for you and all of us everyday! To those suffering any negativity from this situation, a sick loved one, I'm also praying for you. It's scary for all but no matter if you're Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist.... believe in something! And to each and every American, hang in there. We're a long ways from finished. A "flattening of the curve" is only a start. If anyone needs to talk, my email is uk389117 at Gmail. And I thank you OP for such a thorough but quick tutorial. I seen six minutes or so runtime and thought, hmm, this may work!
If you can't find elastic, you can also use ribbon and make it a tied mask. I have to wear a mask all day and I often choose the tied ones because they are more comfortable when worn for longer periods. No matter how thin or comfortable the elastic is, long term use puts pressure on the ears. But please don't let my comment discourage you from making these! ANY donation is welcome!!! I just wanted to encourage those that may be discouraged by not having elastic available that you can still make a difference. Also, I use twist ties or floral wire in the top seam to make a better fit around nose.
For anyone who uses a mask with elastic around the ears, someone I know pulled the elastic toward the back & clipped them together with a paper clip. That akes the pressure off of the ears.
Contact the group “Relief Crafters of America”, we are making them for medical facilities all across the country. You can submit a request for masks and it will be filled as fast as we can sew them :)
tried this twice now each time I turn it right side out only one set of ear eleastic show ..other is still inside all sew in ..wht am I doing wrong? help !!!
Out of the many I've seen, this mask is one of the nicer ones. My wife and I both sew (I'm one of those guys who learned when I was in my teens, 53 now) and we've made a couple mask designs. We are going to try this one next!
Keep in mind when making these, ask of felt or wool or flannel are allowed as some units won't use them if they have a protocol against those materials around oxygen tanks and equipment on helicopters for flight crew
Arianna 100% cotton is apparently best. Quilting fabric weight or t-shirt knit. Polyester and spandex in a cotton blend makes fabric harder to breathe through apparently.
Me and my daughter used this tutorial because we were traveling so we needed sewn masks. we used this tutorial and the finished mask was amazing! Thank you for the tutorial!
My family has been staying home for a week now, and I am going to hang batches outside in the Arizona sun for 30 hours before putting on mask/gloves, packing them up, and donating them. I believe our state is still in the containment stage, so the first ones will go to a homeless shelter, nursing homes, church, etc. then onward. Also, love that the sewing mom/lady demographic pulled through like nobodies’ business lol. Teach us your ways!
Are you in Metro Phoenix area..I did nothing to know we were in statewide lock in for a week..I am in big city, not in isolation yet..But will be making masks..
My sister is a nurse and she instructed me to order some organic cotton muslin burp cloths on the DEFONO store on Amazon and made 5 masks for my family, I believe it can reject the virus
@@erica_arndt How breathable is this....whoever wears will have them on while doing things....just asking Rn here and I sweat under regular blue masks.
I read somewhere that non fusible interfacing has the advantage of having negative polarity (so it repels also negative charged virus particle) and is water proof/hot machine wash/dry
Erica Arndt would cheap felt work? All fabric stores are closed here but the dollar store is open and had craft felt and elastic head bands I could use.
Been looking at several mask tutorial videos today and I have to say this is the best one. Clear, easy to follow directions and well done. Plus she adds the flannel in the middle. And she presses. I'm not a great sewer, mostly grocery bags, sunglass cases, easy stuff, but it drives me nuts when people don't press! LOL Ya gotta press. Stay healthy everyone.
I am making 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 square. Bottom and top (cut 12” pipe cleaner in half, bending ends) , insert pipe cleaner inside top fold. Make 3 pleats on sides, insert elastic in beginning and end of your stitch ( 7”) and it’s ready. I made 200 today for hospital donation
ive already made 200+ masks with this style and i aint changing it any time soon. pass to everbody that asks! it's quick, sturdy and such a great finished style!! THANK YOU!
Thank you very much!! I hadn’t used a sewing machine for about 55 years when I was a boy. This tutorial helped immensely, and it got me interested in the craft again.
I have not tried to sew in over a decade. In fact, I had to read the directions again on threading the machine and bobbin. However, your demonstration was so easy to follow - just enough information to not overwhelm, and simple enough to not intimidate. I was able to recycle some old clothing and an elastic waistband to make several of these quickly. If I can do it, anyone can! After looking through dozens of these "how to" videos I opted for yours, and I am so glad. Thank you!!!
Bless your heart! Sewing is a skill that will come in handy the rest of your life. And you can sew your own skirts and other clothing, which is really fun. Good luck to you, and best wishes!
absolutely love this tutorial. i’ve made about 25 masks using it. i know with the elastic shortage you posted how to do it without it, but i thought i would share my alternative... i used hair ties. when cut they are about 6 inches. so i added an extra inch and made the fabric 6x10 and it seems to work great!
I believe they prefer NOT using elastic because elastic breaks down with multiple washings and causes skin irritation for many people. There are tutorials using fabric ties out there now.
I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this Erica. I copied your tutorial for my own facemasks that I made for charity here in England UK and anyone I have given them too have loved them. As you may know we have lost over 30,000 souls to coronavirus thus far plus many many who have suffered. so for the people that your masks may have helped I add thier thanks too for your generousity in sharing. With love from Pam x
I belong to an online forum where people are discussing this topic. So many disagreements on the subject of filters! Love how you simply added flannel, which can be washed along with the mask! great job!
@@haileyjohnson3536 It's not just about keeping it out. We don't know who will get exposed. But if more people wear a mask then they won't it spread during the time no symptoms are shown. We limit exposed people from infecting others by making masks more acceptable and they won't spread their droplets. It's also good not to stigmatize the wearing of a mask because a person wearing a mask is not spreading what they have, they are protecting others. Also its good protection for people like me who keep forgetting not to touch our faces.
@@anniegarza8039 Westerners don't get this concept. When I explain this, only about 5% get it. People tend to think "self" rather than "others". Good luck.
What about using paper coffee filters? The cone ones. Perhaps in dual layers? They can be thrown away daily and replaced with fresh ones from the shops
@@thefantasticlaurab Ohhhh, I would love to know more about this. I wonder if it would work. I know people assume that three layers of fabric is useless, I do think that it is absolutely worth it, better than nothing. We can't all have medical grade masks. And also, we don't all have access to vacuum filter sheets. I think the idea of coffee filters as an extra layer is quite brilliant.
Absolutely outstanding! You have a real gift for instructing. As a person who instructed fighter pilots in the USAF and was the ops officer of 20 other instructor pilots, you have a real talent. THANKS
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I actually saw on my hometown facebook page today they were asking people in the community to make them. Great way too for teenagers to get community service hours & learn to sew at the same time. Our students have to have 10 hours of community service hours per semester in high school (S.E. Tennessee).
Hi Erica. I’m new to your channel. I’m doing the same thing as you and have helped over 50 people. Us seamstress ROCK ! I’m glad we are able to help . I just finished another 10 masks today. Tomorrow I’m taking a break and going to make some homemade bread for the family. God bless you. And for all the people on here. Be safe and thinking of you, especially our front end helpers. Praying for your all 🙏❤️🙏❤️
If you don’t have elastic you can use wide headbands: cut it into thin strips, then attach it to the mask. It’s softer than hair ties. You can also use bedsheets or pillowcases. Hand sewing works well too if you don’t have a machine.
This is by far the most comprehensive and easy to follow mask tutorial I have found. I am not skilled at sewing, so I'm not whipping these out in 5 minutes, but I was able to sew a mask for my daughter for her new job, and I plan to make more. THANK YOU!
I started sewing face mask, but only 1 fabric, I think it is not enough? 😔I will try to double it tomorrow.. I want to donate it here in my city.. I am in Italy.. 🇮🇹 I won many fabric cottons 1 year ago, and I thought I better use it to sew face mask and donate it. It's the right time, to help each other..
I would like to add that although these handmade masks are not equivalent to the N95 masks that they use in hospitals, they are very useful in preventing yourself from touching your nose or mouth hence reducing the risk of catching the virus. I made mine by adding a piece of waterproof filter and also with an opening at the bottom for inserting more layers of filter if necessary. I do give to friends or whoever needs them! :)
This is what I'm gonna do too. I read somewhere that to make it a more filtered mask, like the n95, you can use a hepa vacuum filter bag. (I'm not saying that this is a substitute for the n95 though). But it filters 99.97% of particles in the air so I thought I'd make a cotton mask and put a layer of the bag on the inside. I havent tried it yet though because it still has to come in the mail lol
I have to admit I take quite a few of the twist ties from the grocery store. I asked the first time and the produce manager said it was fine so now I just grab a bunch!
I have found if you add a 1" dart to one of the long edges it provides a much better and tighter fit around the jaw line. Great idea to use clips instead of having the hassle of pinning them. I use regular small business paper clasps to hold it all in place. Perfect.
Erica! Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I was able to make a mask for both my husband and myself! I have no idea how someone could dislike this tutorial, but, there are so many others that are so grateful! Thank you again! Stay safe!
I want to thank you for this tutorial. I have a huge stash and have sewed all my life. I am thinking that a lightweight fusible interfacing would provide a good “liner”; the thin layer of glue should provide more barrier properties. Retired from nursing, the safety of medical personnel must be protected. At age 72; with diabetes, I can’t work at the bedside, but I can definitely make masks! Thx
I was planning to use interfacing as well, but after doing a lot of reading on the subject, I can see that it is not a good idea. The experts recommend cotton, cotton, cotton....no polyester. Most (maybe all?) interfacing is made of polyester which would not be a good material to introduce into a mask. The cotton flannel layer shown in Erica's video is a better solution.
Love these! I've made masks for my family and my neighbors! On men with larger faces and heads I made them a bit bigger. I have robust men in my family. I made a 5"×8" for my tiny grandma.
Thank you! I haven't sewn in years, but I dragged out my old sewing machine and made a mask for each member of my family. Thanks for your easy to follow, quick, no unnecessary chatter, video on how to do it, You're an excellent teacher!
If you are likely to be in close contact with someone infected, a mask cuts the chance of the disease being passed on. If you’re showing symptoms of coronavirus, or have been diagnosed, wearing a mask can also protect others.
The outbreak of respiratory illness resulting from Corona-virus is going viral, face mask is in severe shortage! I buy some organic cotton muslin cloths on the DEFONO store on Amazon as the fabric of the mask. I made 16 masks for healthcare workers. I am constantly making masks and sending them to hospitals and nursing homes, I recommend the mask fabric to you, I hope you can also sew masks for those in need
Thank you for posting this! I am not a "sew-er" by any stretch of the word... don't even have a sewing machine, so I will have to sew these by hand for me and my family. Your instructions make it easier for a guy like me to wrap his head around what need to be done! Thank you once again!!!
It took me literal hours to sew mine because I kept screwing up 😔 Advice: sew the elastic to the middle piece of fabric first before anything and then when sewing while the fabrics while they're inside out, only do the top and bottom, don't sew the sides until right side out. ✌️
Erica, I was able to get 1/4 inch elastic last week and made one of the masks today with that rather than the ties -- OMGosh! It cut the time by A LOT! And I found it to be more comfortable actually. I have 13 more to make and it's going to be a piece of cake! I thought my finger tips were going to be permanently steamed making those ties *LOL* I made over 100 masks with ties and these last ones will be finished with elastic. Then it's on to other projects (she smiles).
I just finished my first mask! Have NO sewing machine so did it by hand. Had 1/2" elastic that I cut in half...worked great! Instead of stitching straight around (which I could not do) I did a Blanket stitch by hand all the way around, which will hold all in place and actually looks very nice. First one took me 1 1/2 hrs but now that I've figured out how to work around my issue of NO SEWING MACHINE! Your directions are very clear and easy to follow...thank you!
Before folding, might add some top stitching across the center and at 1" intervals to keep the layers together, particularly if the mask gets laundried frequently.
Bit of an extra tip... we cut up coke cans into strips and folded over the edges so they're not sharp. Then sewed it into the top (bigger) hem and folded it round the nose for a better fit. Also incorporated a square of HEPA fabric hoover bags into the middle layer for extra protection.
@@sunrise2day462 I have to admit I've not tried washing multiple times yet, but from looking at it, I can't see why it wouldn't. They're fabric and seem OK.
I know absolutely zero about sewing etc., and I don't own a sewing machine. But I just watched this video, and made 2 of these masks from an old pillow case, with a cloth material in the middle. I sewed it by hand, but it turned out great! If anyone is looking for an "idiot proof" way to make a great mask, this is it! The instructions are clear and easy to follow. If I can do it, anyone can. Oh, and I am from South Africa, and we use the decimal system.. but thanks to Google, it was easy to convert the measurements to centimeters. Great video, thank you, Erica!!
Excellent! Well made and reusable. Simple idea . My wife is a nurse..they're running low on masks, could use, and anyone with sewing machine could make. Thanx for tutorial

I like the idea of doing a third layer in the middle. I have been making them with two layers and a pocket for a filter. But maybe I will do a third layer and still make a pocket for a filter.
Crafty As Folk I was talking to someone today we’re going to start making mask they’re doing a layer of Pellon interfacing and it is supposed to do a better job of filtering then nothing. I have seen the others where you leave an opening because they put their own filter in but anyway that’s all I know

Best mask design and video. Look no further. I have tried others and I give this one my blessing. Thank you so much for posting and sharing your expertise!!!! Super easy, NO BINDING, and great for beginners.
How long would the ties need to be to tie around your head? I understand why a fabric tie would be better for a snugger fit to the face. I hope you'll reply.
'Just saw another video that used binding tape instead of elastic. 36" on each side of mask. Obviously fold in middle of tape and that is centered onto center side of mask. When each piece is secured with pins on each side of mask, begin sewing on one end of the binding tape - and sew down the entire length of the tape as you are securing it to the mask. (Sew/secure on each side of mask with 1/4" seam.)
Go for it Bro! I'm right behind you but at 64. I taught myself how to sew and that has come in very handy because my wife, although she knows how, won't. Plus, I am a Civil War reenactor and must sew many of my own uniforms, as many are from regiments that didn't wear standard sutler available styles. Good luck; and, thanks.
@@randallhawkinson4727 Made my first mask for me, I was able to get fabric but nothing to put in the middle, that being said I hand sewed it and it turned out really good! But it will be a nice gift for someone when I wash it.
You got this! It's easier than you think! I started knitting and crocheting at 10/11 years old (33 currently) and that's a lot more intricate than sewing a square. Just take it slow and make sure you know how to use your machine (if using a machine)
Thank you for this easy and quick way to make a face mask for a first time in sewing. I gave some for my friends who work in the food industry and one who is a nurse. I would highly recommend this for first timer in sewing. I will sew more to give it to my friends who works as frontliners.

I found out that many of my local craft stores are either sold out of elastic, or closed until this virus settles! In case you run across this issue too, I bought some elastic headbands (about 1/8" thick) and they work just as great!
I found this tutorial soo easy to follow - I have watched others and this is the best.Erica explains the instructions simply and are very easy to follow. I am getting so many requests for these face masks . Thank you so much Erica.
Thanks so much, Erica! This tutorial has become the go-to mask making site for so many of us in this time of COVID-19! The masks are great and your tutorial is so easy to follow, and you're such a clear and pleasant teacher. I have made 20 masks so far and found a few difficulties, being a lifetime sewing novice. One problem I found is that the pleats are pretty hard to navigate over with my sewing machine. Another issue I found is the length of the elastics. I had to go back and shorten the elastic on most of the masks. I think that cutting 6" to 6.5" lengths probably would fit most medium build people. I'm going to cut a variety of lengths and make masks for small and medium and large heads/faces. BTW, I tried pinning because I didn't have those nifty clasps you use, but when I went to start sewing that presented its own difficulties. I switched to clothes pins, which worked better than straight pins because the cloth was easier to navigate while sewing, but I just bought some of your nifty clasps for my next round, which will be about 50 masks. Again, many thanks for your great tutorial! Like Mr. Rogers says, look for the helpers in times of trouble, and here you are!
Thank you so much! Out of all the mask tutorials out there, this is by far the best. I sat down last night and tried to make one and Im glad I messaged you about a tutorial! Your the best! 😷😷😷😷

@@wren9936 No, not really. Even if it frays a little bit at the edges, it's no big deal. Of course you wash the entire fabric, before you cut it. Washing is also good because it makes the weave tighter.
This type of mask are perfect to wear over your N95 mask so if someone coughs germs on your mask you can still reuse the n95 without it being contaminated. Great job I'm sure you've helped a lot of people with this video.
Unfortunately N95 can be used only 2-8 hours depends of brand, then they are not effective anymore. There is no way how to protect them .They get wet from your own breath or outdoor humidity and they are not as secure anymore. There is also risk of mold and other viruses growing on them after they been used. I know it is hard to find N95, but it is definitely not secure anymore to wear them multiple times. Just FYI
HI. It's june 25th 2020 and i wanted to say that yours was one of the first vids i had watched when covid19 hit. Yours is still the BEST one for triple layer. I just wanted you to know that i appreciate it. I've been making masks for those in need in my small community and your video is what allowed me to do that. God Bless.
Awesome tutorial, thank you for sharing. I've been making my own masks long before this all started because I'm immunocompromised and this is such a faster and simpler way to make them. Also wanted to add that if anyone is going to donate masks they also should make sure not to use any material with latex.
This was a well put instructional video... i have a small business I work at home and I am having a high demand for these masks.... I'm gonna try my best to make them... i tried stitching by hand and got pricked so many times... just ordered a sewing machine... so I'm gonna follow your video when i get it so i can make some... oh btw i looooooove your sewing room... very neat and clean....
Just got all my fabrics out of the attic and washing so I can start on these tomorrow. Yours was definitely the easiest to understand..I didnt save it and had to look for it again. This time I saved it.
Discounting the current virus for the moment, I like the idea of having something to wear at home to keep from spreading germs when one is sick be it cold or flu.
