I had hermits for 4 years & have joined a few groups on FB . Haven't heard that play sand will kill crabs, but some groups are against just Eco earth. They say it doesn't hold good tunnels or moisture. Can cause shell rot, plus it seems to attract nats. My substrate is a mixture of 5-1 sand/eco earth. Just found your channel the other day, glad you're showing the best way to take care of Hermies:) Most pet shops only sell you bad expensive stuff. They don't care if it's bad, they only care about money!!
You can do just eco earth, just sand, or a mix of both. The mix is best but any of these options have been proven to work as long as there is proper moisture and depth.
Yayyy thank you I’m get a 26 gallon bin because I only have a 10 gallon tank and I know that’s not enough for to medium size crabs! I’m so excited to set up there cage. I feel bad becuase I’m not getting all there stuff tomorrow so I have to keep that in a small cage till tomorrow 😭
am i the only one who thought it was funny when she pretended to drill holes in the beginning because it scared me 😂 also this video really helped me thank you!!
Unfortunately, my hermit crabs died , they live a long life of almost 3 years, I had them for 3 years though, but it was my first crabitat ( I was the first one in the part 5 crabitat review)
I mean you did have a plain crabitat not very exciting and also the heater is under the tank and there isn’t enough substrate so I’m not that surprised but RIP.
Is it common for hermit crabs to spend all day just hiding and staying still for the most part? I have set up a lot of areas for them to explore and hide, but they don’t seem to be very active.
I like the other channels on RU-vid and the crab street journal website. EXCEPT they all claim you NEED a glass aquarium. I guarantee the hermit crabs don't care if they're in glass or plastic. Imo it's just a classist requirement. My crabs are fine in a plastic container. And they are in a much larger plastic container then they would be if I had to spend the same amount on a glass aquarium. Personally I care more about my crabs and they're space more then I do if their cage looks nice for visitors. But apparently it's a requirement to have a "nice" looking cage to most in the hermit crab world. So I appreciate you going against that cause I see it mentioned again and again. Most even have it as a requirement to even adopt a hermit crab. They're literally keeping the crabs from perfectly fine homes because they don't have a "nice" expensive tank. Smh.
I find Instant Ocean is the greatest my sister thinks that table salt has the best but I said like girl you can't do that and she's like yes I can and then she killed her hermit crabs almost instantly after putting them in
One problem with having the cloth or netting in the water dishes is it will end up sucking /wicking all the water out into the sub. & could cause a flood. Which will kill any molters that are down...plastic canvas or larger rock would work in a pinch.
I suggest getting the sand wet and mix it so the burrows will hold great video tho and also I dont think u need holes they don't breathe air but they don't breathe under water either they need humidity so I would not put holes just have what they need in the tank and they should be fine oh and have a tight lid
Sand and eco go in completely dry. I thought moist first also but found out that’s false, the humidity in the tank within a few days will get it to perfect sandcastle consistency
Thanks for the great video! Can I use aquarium sand for fish mixed with play sand if I want to make my sand deeper? Also do I wait for ALL my crabs to be at the surface before adding more sand to the tank?
I love your Chanel so much it really helps me and my hermit crabs, but may I ask can i just use any plastic leaves and plants or do they HAVE to be reptile plants? 😊
iman said we’ll what do you mean by that I mean I think ola y plants should work as long as they aren’t toxic for them so I would check first and also boil the plants too🤗
For the most part yes. As long as you sterilize them first. One of my favorite things to do is wait for my local craft store to have like, a fall decor sale or something. All the fake plants go on sale, and I can usually get a great deal on them. I recently was able to get three huge bush-like, plastic climbing plants for my hermits for only $15 total, whereas if they were "reptile plants" they most likely would have been about 50 EACH.
I have enjoyed watching and learning from your channel. Can you explain why you always talk tank size in gallons? That is a 3 dimensional measurement and my hermit crabs don’t float in the air it is great for fish. Why isn’t it square feet? I mean I have a 6ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft tank, 84 gallons. If I stand it on the end and give the crabs 1.5ft x 1.5ft of land to walk on it is still a 84 gallon tank. I would love to know the land area a crab really needs. I have 7 in the 9 sq foot tank (can only find 3 now I think the others hopefully are all moulting)
hi! so i have two hermit crabs, and one is small, one is medium-large, (not sure) and they have a 30 gallon tank. so i recently have seen some flying bugs in their tank so i cleaned it out completely, got new substrate, cleaned all the stuff going back in the tank, and then i was just looking at my little one and i saw i whiteish little like ball? im scared its a egg possibly. any tips on what to do?
hi idk if anyone will see this but PLEASE HELP i have had my hermit crabs for about a year and they have not molted yet i don’t know if that is normal but if someone could tell me that would be great :)
That's smart (I'm not saying that I think u wouldn't be capable of taking care of one) what I'm saying is, some people figure that they'll just buy one regardless of if they are sure they're capable of taking care of one, and buy it just cause they want to, even tho they won't be able to give it a good home. Me personally, I have done research and I am able to properly take care of one, but I Appreciate that u aren't just buying one just cause you want one :)
Thanks so much I love your Channel but I have a question why is my hermit switching between 3 shells constantly and he has never molted and also how to tell the gender
So you can see I think she has a video for the gender, also it might be common for your crab to change shells from time to time because it’s growing and will eventually stop fitting. Once your hermit crabs get comfortable with you holding them lift them up and if they have two dots it’s a male if it has one dot it’s a female 🙂
I have a question... so I bought a land hermit crab from a gift shop and he came in such a tiny little enclosure. There is no room for him to roam around. Is beach sand safe for him? He seems so sad and I don’t want him to die within the first week. Also.. how long can hermit crabs live in a tiny enclosure? (about half a gallon)
Beach sand is probably safe like she said but u could also u playsand u can get a 50 pound bag at Lowe's for like 5 bucks or eco earth but if u get both I suggest 5 to 1 ratio sand to eco earth and if u use just playsand get the sand wet and mix it so when the crabs burrow they'll hold
Hi I just adopted some hermits and have upgraded their tank I’m wanting to get an even bigger tank and put real plants in the crabitat with them, wondering if you have any experience with real plants in the crabitat and wether or not it would be a good idea or do I just stick to fake?
hermits crabs don't live on beaches tupid they live in forest like areas that are near shorelines not on beaches im not saying i hate im just saying that i hate but you is wrong and i think that they should always have eco oh and you just a copy of ccs crab central station...
