This home made tool was successfully used in removal of crankshaft pulley in a 2002 Camry V6 1MZ-FE engine. It was also used for blocking timing belt pulleys for their removal and reinstallation to the factory torque.
I've done it too. But some people, myself included, may prefer the more "all under control" solution. And the tool allows to torque the bolt back to factory specs, if someone wants that.
