Very clear instructions and very easy to follow! Fitted the stalk in less than half an hour! Needed to fit the additional wire, which was again pretty straightforward apart from getting the wiper arms off! All working and tested. I bought a second hand genuine stalk and a separate cable both purchased from eBay for £20 all in.
I have just done this Mod today on my MK5, Golf TDi (55 plate) I got the Meyle cruise control Stalk off eBay for £34.99 On Borrowing A VagCom computer. I had the video in front of me and followed you step by step. Absolutely spot on with instruction. Cannot give you enough praise. Great video. Well done. 👍🏻
Thank you so much taking the time to make and upload this video. Managed to get the OEM stalk from ebay for £20 then had my friend do the coding for a pint. It's working perfectly I'm so happy. Appreciate the clear and consice instructions.
I did this on my 2010 Mk6 GTI today. Thanks so much for the video. It's really helpful. The hardest part was removing the airbag. I struggled for probably an hour and eventually had to get the girlfriend to help. The thing is the airbag isn't just held in my those metal springs, it's also held in by plastic push fittings inside. So while you do have to release the metal springs, you have to pull really bloody hard to get it out. Be careful, though, because the wires inside aren't that long. After that the rest was fairly easy as far as pulling plastic parts off cars goes. Everything worked and I think the Meyle stalk actually feels nicer than the original VW one.
The airbag springs are easy when you know how. I am pretty sure I've done a Mk6 (or Scirocco) and don't recall pulling too hard. Did you use a mirror to see the springs?

@@volkswizard Yeah I used a mirror. I don't think I would have had a chance without a mirror. I could see exactly what needed to happen with the springs, and sometimes they would stay "up" for a while but then quickly ping back down when I tried the other side. It was really clear it was being held in by more than just the springs. So nothing for it except a really, really good tug and don't think I ever would have managed on my own. I've read online there may be a couple of airbag manufacturers for Mk6s, so maybe I got the difficult one?
Just wanted to say a thank you for posting this how to. I followed it to the letter and got my stalk fitted in about 20 minutes. Sadly I found out I needed ‘the wire’ (mines an 05) so I’ll have to wait until that comes. I’ve now watched many of your other videos too and I can honestly say I’ve not come across someone so honest in their videos. Keep up the good work!
Just fitted my cruise control today on my 09 plate Edition30, fantastic tutorial, took me just under an hour and the car had the right module so I just plugged in the indicator stalk and then it started working. You have to go over 30 miles an hour and then the cruise control light comes on
Thanks, your video helped alot😁 One tip for getting the airbag out use your flat head driver and place it in the cut out on top and put it on top of the black piece which is the clip and pry it to the centre of the steering wheel, really quite a easy step once you know the orientation of said clip.
Hello Volkswizard thank you for your fantastic videos, I wonder help and point me in the right direction I have a 2012 VW UP here in Australia without cruise control and early BCM IS0937086, I have been lucky enough to obtain the cruise control stalk from a wrecked Up but not the BCM that seems to got lost, I’m lead to believe that I need to change my BCM to a IS0937087 or higher, I can’t find anything BCMs here in Australia could you provide me with a link for some wreckers in UK please. Many thanks I maybe pushed into upgrading into a Golf or Polo after watching your videos in future.
Don’t know if you can help me but you have inspired me to retrofit cruse to my polo but having problems with getting part No for stalks. Do you have advice on where to find correct part No for my car. Thanks Paul
Hi John. Thanks for commenting. You do actually need to code the steering control module and the engine ECU but these can be done by anyone with VCDS. You could even do this well before you install the part if that's convenient as I am pretty sure that wouldn't cause any problems apart from maybe log a harmless fault code.
volkswizard Apologies Andrew. I originally didn’t watch the beginning of the video, so I missed the bit about VCDS. I thought any coding would be done at the end, after installation. Silly me 🤦♂️😂
No problem. As you say, the coding is usually done at the end but checking the module is compatible is key to everything going to plan and while you are doing that you may as well do the coding :)
Hi, excellent video. Helped me a lot to reprogram steering control module , had to replace it due to faulty code. Car is still not running, cranks fine. Crankshaft sendor ok, plugs spark ok, fuel pump ok, . Everything was fine but after replacing fuel filter and fixing vacuum leak, it didn’t start. The car has been parked for over a month for service and water pump replacement. Is there any inhibitor switch on golf mk5 GT which is resisting it to start? On Vcds it showed only steering control module fault. Can you please help? What should I be looking for on Vcds? Battery was very low so I charged it couple of times. During charging , Once I mistakenly connected wrong terminal to battery due to very dark, which resulted in a blown fuse on charger. I checked all the fuses with tester and also changed old one with new, and they are ok. Anything I should else be looking for?
I am not sure modern cars can handle batteries being connected the wrong way around so it's possible (not definite) that you might have damaged the ECU. Has the car started since you did that?
@@simonmurphy9876 It's pretty much identical on an early mk6, on later cars the left and right stalks are one piece and there is no control module underneath, it's all controlled by the slip ring/steering angle sensor in the middle. I recently tried to install cruise on a 2016 Scirocco. The control module took the cruise settings OK but it wouldn't actually work so do a lot of homework on which parts you need.
@@volkswizard thanks, yeah im beginning to realise that, ive done a lot of research on it but its not that well documented. I have the kit already purchased for my model mk6 gti, but there is a few concerns i have brfore i start into it... Do you mind if i email you, pick your brain on a couple of potential issue's i may encounter??
Thanks Oshane:) I was a bit surprised it went to 23 mins but I suppose that pretty quick really considering you get to see the whole job in real time. Hope it helps you do your car.
I have a gti edition 30 2007 with highline cluster and steering wheel buttons and want to install cruise control. Am I right in thinking all I need to buy is the cruise control stalk? I already have VCD's and the reason I ask this is because some people online are buying steering control modules and switching wires over from the ECM??? Thank you in advance.
Steering control module is quite likely on that year, you shouldn't need to mess around with wires though. I fitted cc to a 2007 Edition 30 using just the stalk, the steering module accepted the CC coding OK, light even came on on cluster but CC wouldn't work until steering module swapped - really annoying! Scan your module with VCDS to get patt number and check on the Ross Tech site
Excellent DIY video! Followed your instructions and very happy to have successfully replaced my cruise-control stalk. Big smiles from Victoria, BC, Canada :)
THANK you for this video man!! Oh my word. I was looking for a legit guide for a while (most are people just aimlessly hacking away at pieces of trim for 5 minutes) and then I saw this one by you and knew it would be good! 👍🏼
Wow, thanks Chris! Considering there are SO many DIY videos from other helpful people I am humbled. It is a job I really enjoy doing which I guess helps, glad it helped you too 👍
Brilliant video. Very good explanation, nice and clear and concise. Can you tell me when the byte and bit on the engine coding is? I couldn't quite work it out from the video?
Thank you ☺️ Mine doesn't work since I bought the car with it but it seems it has an aftermarket one installed into it but it does totally nothing I tried everything and going over 20mph or whatever speed it doesn't work. Maybe I should check the fuses? Thanks
Great informative video this. I paid for VW to do my cruise retrofit on my jetta about 7 years ago! If this video was out back then, I'd have definitely tackled the job myself and saved about £120. Great work.
My golf 5 2006 1.9 tdi goal have allready a cruise control. When i turn ignition on (without starting the car) and i turn on/off the cruise control, the light on the dashboard is turning on/off bit when i start the car if the cruise contorl is on it turns off automaticly any help? Also i put video from the problem so i can find a solution
i purchased stalk and connecting wire loom, but cant help but this more is needed for the audi a3 8l 1.6 in order form to hac cruise, what control throttle (used to be a vacuum modual) on older cars , ?
Hi there. Even on A3 8L the throttle is managed by the ECU so once you have the stalk fitted and wire connected to the ECU, you need to recode the ECU using VCDS to tell it to look for a cruise control input. I am pretty sure there are some guides out there. I fitted it to an 8N TT which is pretty much the same car.
Hi guys, ive retrofitted cruise control to my Edition 30, with a febi stalk. Afterwards ive coded the steering controller which is accepted, but when trying to code the engine module and tick the box to enable cruise control in the long coding, it accepts the code but if I go back in, it's reverted back to 00 again. No error codes for my modules and everything works on the stalk except CC. I read that I might need to go into the 'coding 2' section but it's greyed out for me. I dont know the code for the security section if I need to access via that route? I've also checked the cruise control stalk in the measuring blocks on both the engine and steering module and all the switches show as working, as does the clutch switch when I operate it and watch the measuring blocks change. Is it a VCDS issue maybe? Does anyone have genuine VCDS in the Aylesbury, Bucks area that could see if they can activate my cruise control in the Engine module? Cheers in advance
Very clear video. Probably I have a control module that screws you and says accepted and doesn't work anyways, as I followed all the steps including coding, but doesn't work,
How do you connect vagcam to your car at the start? is it just a matter of typing in the registration plate for it to recognize the car model? I have a early 2006 golf mk5 GT. Would it accept it? Can you do a video of changing the cluster to a highline version? I only have the midline version.
Hi, VAG COM will recognise which modules are installed automatically on a CAN BUS car like Mk5 Golf. Unfortunately cluster swaps I believe can't be done with VAG COM due to the immobiliser coding required.
Hey, I installed the lever too and coded also with vcds, everything is accepted and also at measures it shows that the buttons are pressed, but when driving it dont activate cruise control, can you maybe help ? Its a Golf Mk5 from 2008
i read that 2010/2009 dont have seperate control modules , its all integrated in hub, and its a bit tricky to find which knobs will work with it, anyone know which control paddles to look for?
great video, VERY helpful, just fitted a c/c/ stalk to my 2008 pre facelift skoda and wondered why it wasn`t working.....now I know why, it has to be programmed in via V.C.D.S , thanks again...………...
my car is off the road at the minute, and I'm doing as much work on it as possible before it's on road. I cant get any vagcom done without driving the car somewhere really. could I take apart my wheel, check the model of my steering module and ensure cruise works, then install the stalk. then I can get coding soon as I start driving?
Can't see why not, it's just a lot easier to scan than dismantle but if you have time and don't have to reassemble then go for it. Check list here wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions
Hello first of all thank you for this video!I just want to ask you...I have a vw scirocco 1.4 2008 with golf mk5 steering and i want to install a cruise control like this it is impossible to install it without make changes to the wiring like you done it ?Only with vcds cooding because i saw a lot of videos that they put wires in the steering.
I’ve got a scirocco with the mk5 wheel too, did you ever try fitting it and what did you need to do? I’m hoping it’s just as easy as in the video but I’m not sure
Amazing video. Thank you. Just Installed in an early (red MFD) Scirocco DSG. Found a friendly person to code it for me and all works. No speed comes up on display though. Is this correct?
Glad to be of service! I've not installed CC on an Up! but it's a very Mk5/6 car in that area so should be similar. Be interesting to see if each stalk is separate or if they are one part as on later Mk6
volkswizard I think the stalks come as a pair but the ups have different bcs modules and only 3 out of 5 are comparable with cruise or it’s another £500!!
Thanks Roger. I haven't got time to review the video know but I knew at the time 2011 onwards for Golf 6 and Scirocco there was a change in the stalk as it went from each side separately to a combined left and right stalk presumably to save VW money. Just checked and it's stated clearly in the description of the video
@@volkswizard Oh yeah mate, I'm not blaming you one little bit, your videos are awesome and it was totally my fault for not fully reading the description, TBH my car is a 60 plate and I stupidly always thought it was a 2010.. my bad...lol,... anyway hurry up and make a 2011 onwards cruise control retrofit video please..
Thank you for very informative video :) so what is the deal with padles ? I have dsg gearbox with paddles in my 2015 scirocco, will I be able to install cruise control there? Thanks
Great video, very helpful, thank you for making and posting! Did it on my Seat Leon 2010 1P, steps were identical. Did the coding using VCDS pro. No extra wiring was needed. Cheers!
Great video thanks! I need to fix/replace the broken cruise control on my 2014 Seat Leon 5f/mk3 (same as the Golf mk7). I don't suppose you know of any major difference that I should be aware of before tackling the job. I think I'll have to replace both sides as it's one unit. Thank you for recommending a quality aftermarket product as well!
Hey Omar. If it's an MQB car which I think a 2014 Jetta must be then I can't say as I have no experience. If it's a PQ35 car like mk5/6 Golf then it's probably quite easy. Thanks :)
Thanks for the guide. If I code the ecu for cruise control and it accepts it does that confirm that I have the cable running between the steering wheel control module and the ecu or is the only way to confirm to take it all apart?
That's a good question. If you code the engine ECU for cruise, this may not prove you have the cable. Likewise, if you code the steering control module. The reason for this is that you are accessing these modules via the existing diagnostic cables, the bit you want is to to go from steering column module to ECU and not sure how to test that. If your car is post 2006 model year you will almost definitely have the cable. I've never fitted the cable so unsure as to how to know for sure. Also if your car came with a cruise compatible steering module, then there is a good chance it will have the cable. Best of luck.
volkswizard Finally got round to doing this. The car had a compatible steering module and accepted the coding so chanced taking it all apart and the cable was there. A bit of forum digging suggested the cable became standard at some point in 2006 (its a 06 car).
Instant like and subscribe! I know it says the guide is for MK6 Golf, Passat, A3 ect, just wondering if this will work on a Seat Leon 2011, diesel please? Edit: By the way my car doesnt have any steerling wheel controls
Should be similar but you may have the one piece stalk that does both left and right sides rather than left and right being separate stalks - the Mk6 Golf from 2010 has the one piece stalks (unfortunately as they cost more!)
Do you always have to code it? I have a broken a3 with it on and a another a3 without it, will I just be able to use all the parts from it and stick it on the new car?
Otherwise ok but i would have liked to see airbag facing other way around on passenger seat, the pause to drain remaining current after disconnecting the battery for half an hour and see the actual tab which holds the cruise in the place (in video we can see only your elbow).
This is usually automatic though never done a Leon. On some Golf 5 the green cruise dash light only comes on when the speed is set, on others it comes on when when you switch cruise with a speed being set (i.e. based on position on the switch in top of the stalk).
Hi Jonathan, I reckon it is, the stalks are very similar to Mk5/6 Golf but I'm not sure if they are the late Mk6 type which means the left and right stalk are actually one part. I've got cruise on my Up! GTI, as you can imagine I love it!
Hi brilliant diy video I'm going to install cruise to my golf mk6 r 2012 the bit I'm concerned about is this cable that runs to the ecu i went into vag com and it had the option to select cruise control location on steering wheel setting is this likely it already has the cable running to the ecu?
I think Mk6 have cable so your issues are having a compatible module (built into slip ring IIRC) and getting a stalk which being left and right stalks in one is quite dear (but worth it)
Not sure about OBDeleven pro but of you can do coding it should be OK. The beauty of VCDS is that is doesn't give you the coding options (on most cars). Is the coding in the video? Should be. I don't have the car any longer so can't extract it but it should be on the web somewhere.
If it's UK, use this contact form to ask them www.meyle.com/nc/en/contact/ If not UK, their global site will be able to help. I tend to find what I want on Ebay :)
Just about to add cruise to my 2009 Scirocco which is basically the same as the Golf as I know its not so easy on models after 11/2009. The kit I have ordered says it has a cable with it too, do you know where I am supposed to add this cable please.
The cable runs from steering column to ECU under the bonnet. I'd be amazed if you need it though so code the Steering Electronics ECU for cruise before you start and if you don't need it, it will accept the coding and you can then just do what I did in the video. I wouldn't bother fitting cruise if I had to fit the wire as it's such a pain but might just be me.
volkswizard thanks. I coded it with vcds no problem all accepted fine. Looking at the part number for my steering wheel hardware it says I have a high line setup and is ready for cruise etc so I’m guessing it will all be fine. Should have the new stalk tomorrow 😀
@@adikacorri8892 It depends on the car, some early Mk5 Golf and cars based on that platform won't have the wire and it makes the job a lot harder to do. There is a way to check but I can't recall how. From my experience 2006> cars seems to have the wire (usually!)
Very nice. Watching after the VW Service in Dehradun India refused to install Cruise Control on my 2013 VW Vento. Wonder if it is possible to do something like this.
Can you help with cruise control assembly for audi a4 b5 1999 year afn engine , specialy how to conect wires to ecu , and where , witch pin to conect to , thanks
Anything is possible in theory but I don't think you could on PQ35 chassis very easily, I believe Passat did have it but it would be a nightmare as radar location needs to be 100% perfect and stable. On MQB it would be hard enough but every MQB car (I think) has it as standard or an option.
@@volkswizard i think if you make it like Touareg have under badge , or like audi on sides of bumper like fog lights , that is not problem , i think hard part is electronics , wiring and calibration i think
Hi I’ve got a 2008 MK5 GT TDI DSG I wanted your advice as I have retrofitted a MK6 GTI steering wheel with the CH control module as I wanted the paddle shift and buttons to work. Also I have fitted the cruise control stalk which you have shown in the video. I used VCDS to programme etc. And For some reason I can’t get it to work any ideas what it could be thanks
