This is so much easier than you'd think. Thanks for putting this together. Ive been weighing the options of doing my own or buying a kit. This definitely makes me lean towards a DIY.
this is the simplest and looks like the fastest fender flares i is seen around RU-vid, great job and love that new edge mustang get some love, not many new edge track cars in RU-vid. Getting some inspiration to do my own carbon fiber DIY
Wow Dude I just binge all your video on Carbon Fiber for beginners play list… Men you have so many skills a one man production company… builder, CF business, race car driver, race car builder… Well youknow all your trades… I am blown away your videos are awesome… I came across your channel due to the fact that my sone order a hood from Seibon and it came in a crapy car-board box and at the air scoop the top coat came damage.. So my sone enlisted me to fix it… wish me luck first time dealing with CF… Thanks for making your videos 👍
i love this stuff! You are awesome, AJ! doesn’t need to be perfect, because race car. honestly, i see no real reason for carbon fiber otherwise. keep up the great work.
I got a whole bunch of stuff from us composites luckily they are local so I can just go to the warehouse, they are very helpful too they asked me about my order and suggested different products based on the application I told them about.
So glad I found this channel I’m rebuilding my 2001 GT that was the only thing that managed to survive the huge fire that hit paradise and burned the whole mountain down and all thanks to the power company. Billions in damage and killed 100+ people. Do you have any custom parts that you offer or anything like that? I need to replace a few things becuase there were some spots that got hot so some shit needs replacing and I’m in love with carbon fiber. I wanna do my fairings for my Honda CBR1000rr too I’m gonna start at your first video and binge my way through you won me over with the New Edge
love your videos im learning a ton, gonna take a shot at making a set of fenders using this technique for my time attack car. do you mind telling me what epoxy you used? was it just the tabletop epoxy for the whole part?
yep finding ur channel was a blessing. watching you do this made me realize... my m3 e92 cant be my track car lol ill faint if i cut the body like that
Maybe I don't understand the measurement segment well enough, but it seems like a problem with a lot of these flares that go straight out from the body: Won't the tire smash into it as the suspension moves through the travel? Or are you planning only 1" of travel? Great video, thanks for sharing!
How do you get the carbon to shape like that when you put the epoxy on? When i tried to put carbon fiber on somthing thats has a shape/curve, it just wanna straight out again
Can you comment or do a video on if there are differences in the epoxy you use in this process vs. full-on bagging? Maybe also talking about the UV resistance too?
That’s awesome. Thanks for all the helpful knowledge. I’m working on building some custom pieces for my project truck and going to use some of your techniques to make them out of carbon. Is there any specific type of carbon to purchase and have you ever done anything with the chopped carbon look or method?
The hardest part I keep running into is making the other side symmetrical with the first side made. Whether it's fender flares or fenders. Do you have any advice for that?
Hi AJ, I'm starting with carbon fiber, and you do it much faster than the tutorial I've seen so far, they always recommend to: epoxy, wait 1h30/2h until it's tacky, lay cloth... and that between each layer, but you wet it, add layer upon layer in one row ! That clearly works, so why bother with the waiting between layers, are you using a special epoxy or is it something else ? Thanks
I think Im going to try this technique to flare my front bumper to cover the front of the tires! Could you just bond it to the car? or will that not hold?
Around the 25 min mark where you finished sanding and applied the table top epoxy. I thought you can’t sand carbon fiber or it frays. I have a painted carbon fiber part I would love to go back to a bare carbon look. Can I just sand down to the carbon and then re clear it?
Great stuff, per usual! Question, since you coated these in the epoxy that is more used for table tops would they still have the same release characteristics if you decided to make a mold of them in the future to reproduce them? Not saying you will I have my own project going on and am asking more about that. Thanks!
Take the time to form the foam etc right on the car and pull a mold from there. He spends way too much time filling and sanding and still ends.up with an inferior part.
What type of foam is that - looks like insulation board? I guess it doesn't need to be epoxy resin compatible since the packing tape protects the foam?
I’m joining this chat a bit late. Quick question; do you not have any concerns with the parts warping during cure due to laying the carbon weave in the same orientation/direction?
Do you have any videos on how you went about replicating your car panels in carbon? Did you make a mold of the original then lay up carbon in the mold or do some sort of over lay like you did in this video?
I'm really curious if you have any tips and tricks for making two sides of a car as symmetrical as possible (in those situations when you actually care)?
templates and measurements mainly. since I used the same thickness and layers of foam on the stock body, coupled with some measurements it was good enough for me. There are tools that can copy and transfer shapes. Its one of those "whatever works" situations.
@@ajhartmanaero Thanks!! And to be clear, I didn't think you were too concerned about making this project perfectly symmetrical or anything, but I imagine you do on others.
Nice video. Thanks!. But i have a few questions Please reply if you can #1. Time 14:00 what epoxy system and hardener (slow, mid, fast) do you use #2. Time 19:30. Same question as above #3. Time 19:32. The process looks like a carbon fiber skinning. My question. why you didn't wait to base coat get sticky to the touch to put a last finish layer of CF? . I noticed you applied a base and put the final layer right over it and wetted out. #4. Time 22:55. Table top epoxy. What hardener you used . Slow, fast mid? Is that coat came out clear ? Thanks
For lighter fairing you can use WEST 407 low density with epoxy for strong light fairing. Because of the dark color you can't use the 410 it's actually lighter. Here's a link www.westsystem.com/407-low-density/ Much stronger and lighter than bondo.
