A friend of mine is a prime example of what happens when you don’t have this kind of experience to learn from. He grew up in the country, just like I did. But his parents, at his own admission, didn’t teach him anything. Now he’s asking me how I’m able to do the renovations I am in my house because he never learned any of it.

People's interest just shift. Humans are humans. Doesn't say anything about the generation. I was writing software at 14 years old. Were you? If it does say something about our generation, let's stop and remember who raised us. You. It's just wood cutting. Doesn't make you a genius. Get over yourself.

I agree with the first comment. it's really good to see you are passing down your knowledge to your son and this way his understands what it's like to build something from scratch and see the outcome. it's very valuable to learn that small part of LIFE because you will need to work hard at everything you want,need and have. Great job and thank you for all your tips. I will try my first deck in the next few weks at my parents home.

This has helped me a lot...a lot....finishing my project. I used Camo screw diagonal deck boards picture frames exactly as show here. Thanks a ton Jeff..I wish I could share picture of the finished deck. The only thing I struggled with was cutting the access board perfectly straight for the picture frame, even after multiple trial cuts before making an actual one, couldnt pull it straight. Also, kept on making a slight cut on the supporting joists as I moved along after adjusting the height as show in the video. I did treat those cuts with preservative though.

I like using the sliding miter saw, so I can do impromptu angles just by lining the saw and locking it on the line. Sliding the blade up and down the line helps me determine if the angle is correct as well. Any reason not to have a sliding miter saw? You can lock them in place too. I feel like you can do anything with them that the non sliding one can do, and you can cut bigger boards too.. I even find it easier to cut a 6x6 post with my sliding miter saw. I also used it to notch a 6x6 post too.
@marccarter4469

A sliding mitre saw would save you having to cut twice on those wider boards also the Dewalt sliding mitre saw has a laser guide so you can line those angles up perfectly without any guess work.

Disclaimer up front: I've never built a deck before, but I've watched a bunch of youtube videos on carpentry projects. The Samurai Carpenter did a few videos a few years back on building a deck and he also picture framed his deck, but rather than mitering the corners and fussing for that perfect joint, he just assumed it was an impossible and fruitless endeavor and he cut half laps in his picture frame boards and made a pretty joint that way, leaving a bit of board protruding from each board, like an inch or so, and the result looked very nice, and presumably that kind of thing will hold up (in the looks department) a lot better than even the perfect miter joint (which will presumably only look perfect right after you finish building it). Obviously the client gets what he or she wants (the Samurai Carpenter was his own client for that build) but I'm wondering what you think about the idea in general?

Do you picture frame the entire deck at the end or frame one end, lay your boards long and cut them off only at one end (other end flush to the picture frame)?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
I prefer to lay all my boards first and then trace my line using the board I will eventually use as the picture frame. It tends to eliminate gaps where the wood may be warping, besides the factory cut on the lumber isn't always square and sometimes splitting so I take advantage of the cutoff to remove unwanted pieces. Although if you have nice wood then you could just saw cut one side.

My father was a perfectionist finish carpenter. He was the most miserable man to work with. He threw rocks at his crew. He called me and my mom a cunt. I used his drill once and he flipped then bought me my own and I was sleeping on the sofa and he dropped a hardcase drill on my stomach and said, "don't say I've never bought you anything." This video made me realize just how much my father was a dink and at the same time, I know what you guys are doing because of my abusive father who taught me how to build a house meticulously.
