Excellent work. Having planed all the high points, using an 8 ft level as my guide to detect them, there remain many low points on the joists. How should I fill these low points in order to avoid a wavy deck surface ?
Any reason why you went with screws over clips? Also wondering if the 45 angles should have biscuits along with pvc glue? What spacing did you use between each board and along the long side? Thanks man!
Some companies don't use G Tape is it necessary or not? My mom's builder didn't use the tape or the caps/plugs on her TimberTech decking. Why didn't you use hidden fasteners?
Wow, those miter cuts are right on!!! You can set your watch to those joints. Great job Brent, looking awesome as always. I give this project a "Sexy Beast" seal of approval lol.
This shows you do smaller projects as well as very large projects as well. Top notch work Brent! What are you doing, if anything, to the exposed rim joists?
Thanks so much for the kind words Roger. We are still planing on installing a railing and doing something with the area below the rim joists. Not final as of yet but will be coming up :)
guess what, brent? i had no idea there was such a thing as an electric planer. come to think of it , it makes sense cause everything else is electric, right? we are sober today so i had had some time to contemplate.
New subscriber here found you on TikTok and I love your content and how you always explain what and how you are doing everything but yeah keep on killing it man and I’ll keep watching all your awesome videos!!!!btw my wife is pissed at me cuz I have been watching ur videos all day and being lazy lmao…it’s all good tho tomm is just gunna be a busy day!!!
So what would people suggest using if you are doing this but with actual deck boards not composite, in terms of fasteners and plugging the holes if you can? I'd love composite instead of actual lumber, but the size of my deck cost ~$40k+ just for the composite top boards (yes its a massive deck easily 1500 sq ft)
Hey I’m looking to make the upgrade to composite decking I was quoted just under 9 grand for materials. That’s without framing 😩 we’re hoping the structure is sound with minimal replacement. I want to know what’s the difference between the caps vs the connection clips, any idea?
Hey bud sorry to be that guy but this video claims to be sponsored by timber tech , yet you’re not using 3/4 inch spacing on screws at board ends when fastening to the last joist , and then you’re splitting board ends 3/4-3/4 on butt joints when timber tech wants full bearing on width of a joist in the spec sheet then fastening 3/8-1/2 inch from the end of the board , both scenarios don’t meet timbertechs specs and will most likely void warranty … Just curious
Well done as always man. The G tape is a WAAAAY over looked step. That deck will be there a very long time. And I think I can figure out what the next few videos might involve. You’ve gotta do something with that sexy beast I would bet……keep up the good content man.
Hi Chris. Thanks for reaching out. I do occasionally take on projects for other people in my area. Feel free to email me further details at byotools@gmail.com
I’m curious as to why you cut the nineties on the picture frames, why not lay a complete board with a forty five on each end. Not questioning you just asking a question to learn.
They are actually 16's and I did it to keep the seams semetrical while also making sure we are waisting as little material as possible. those boards aren't cheap :). Thanks so much for watching as always.
@@lechatbotte. The price of all lumber at my local hardware literally jumped 50-100% overnight. I was part-way through building a shed and glad I at least got most of the framing done before the hike!
This is really good and actually a lot less work than I initially thought it would be. I never built a deck before, but this looks pretty straight forward. 15:12 Please tell me you see the two holes and filled them lol
Use the grooved boards with hidden metal clips . (auto 3/16 spacing and very few screws to plug (possibly on face square boards)) ( lot of extra work with plugs and width differences hardly show/matter) (any one of Timber Tech's lines will outlive you)
Heres my OCD kicking in, where can I find your gloves and tool pouch and why did you choice them.? I have a dozen of each and don't like any of them. Have you seen the work pants that have a built in pocket or sleave for knee pad inserts? Thanks and beautiful patio.
new subscriber here! awesome work, craftsmen's ship is outstanding. about to begin building a free standing deck in backyard. working with Louisiana heat and humidity, will be a nightmare- i envision lots of water breaks. cost breakdown?
Very good video. I'm about to build my own deck and this is definitely my guide. One quick question on the picture frame edge board. You've installed it with 0 gap, butting against each other where the split is. Is that okay? composite deck boards are known for expansion from end to end, hence recommending in the spec sheet to add variable gap depending on the temperature at installation.
amazing work, love it! I do have a question, your using a normal hammer to hammer the plugs 14:00 in with and not a rubber hammer, was this just because you didnt have one near you, or how :D just curious, personally i would have used a rubber hammer, without knowing better :D
If the wood joists aren't going to last 50 years, does it make sense to spend all the money for the composite deck boards that last 50 years but will have to be pulled up to replace rotten joists? Can the composite wood be reused? Just wondering if it is really worth it to use the composite in the longrun.
I came across your channel because I loved the aux box shed that you installed in your backyard. I got hooked to your awesome content right away. With that said, how many houses do you own?! Haha.
I love the deck, What would you suggest if you were to want or need built-in deck lighting and maybe an electrical outlet on the far side away from the house.?
Did you install fascia board? Why did you not use a fix system where the clips are hidden in the gaps between the decking boards? The clip slides into the grooved edge of the board and is screwed into the joist. This is a much easier installation and avoids to put the caps into the screw holes.
Great Job !!! Im in the middle of building my backyard deck and struggling with bendy deck boards. I decided that im too poor to use composite decking, especially with prices of materials these days. Great Job and great video!! Thanks for sharing!
what about the sides? you can see the beams and it doesnt match the top of the deck. that would definitely attract my eye everytime i stepped up onto the deck from the sides. also i can see the anti weed paper and that would also annoy me if i were the owner cause i know this deck cost 10k + and id want it to be perfect. is there a skirt you can put around it to cover up those eyesores?
How do you protect house from water? I always thought you want something installed between deck and house, also something to prevent water going through/under the deck and towards the house foundation. Not necessary?
If the deck is attached to the house with a ledger board, you need to be careful with flashing and other details to ensure you are not letting water get into the house frame. This is a free-standing deck which is not actually attached to the house so there is not really any issue. The deck was built mostly over an existing concrete patio which I would hope was graded to slightly slope away from the house, so any water going under the deck will just run off that patio.
Thank you! Your video was very informative video. For the post holes, did you drill holes directly into the concrete patio as well? Did you need to get a permit for your low-level deck?
Just out of curiosity why didn't you put a TimberTech facia on the outer frame of the deck below the picture frame to make it look better? Additionally, if you had done that what kind of waterproofing would have needed to be done between the two materials?
Nice job. I am about to build a 16x32 plus a 7x32, plus a 8x10 foot multilevel deck and this offered some great information and tips that clarified a few questions that I had. Thank you
@@diggingmystyle I know. Plus I work 55 -60 hours in culinary. But I have to make the wifey happy. I'm relieved that lumber prices have dropped. I bought the composite decking, and have been waiting for lumber to drop a few more bucks.
