I build a DIY trash can deer feeder for the Apple orchard. (Which ends up working great). Getting footage on my DJI Mini 2, and giving an initial review with my first thoughts. Follow along with me as I restore my Great Grandfather 100 acre property tucked deep in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia.
I'm restoring my Great Grandfathers 100ac mountain top property here in VA. This channel follows me on that journey, while learning to hunt and fish it! With all of that, this channel also follows most of my outdoor adventures including diving, spear fishing and some DIY content, so if this sounds like something you'd enjoy consider sticking around, mash that subscribe button and follow along with my journey.

Don't know if you'll see this but if you put a piece of plywood on the inside to kind of make it funnel towards the front might be a little bit nicer

We been using 55 gallon plastic barrel for 30 plus yrs in UP of Michigan cut a 3” hole on the very bottom on front an cut the top out and set a metal locking top off a steel 55 gallon drum. It’s takes 300 lbs of corn. If you have Bear problem they will dump it over! We put 1/2” lag bolts so can’t dump them over!

You can add a PVC down pipe as well to get it off the ground a little. Lets them paw at it more. I appreciate the comment!

I have gravity feeders a built out of 60 gallon food grade white plastic drums, I’ve used the steel but you can’t tell how much is left, drums are $15 where I get them, white works best if you have a camera on them because the night time pics shows you exactly how much corn is left. I use the 55-60gal barrel band bolt tubing legs on them and the tops are 8 ft high, I pull right up with the side by side or truck and never have to get out of the bed of it, take lid off lay on roof refill, and put the lid back on, I put the game winner gravity feeder neck and spouts on them. Funnel in barrel and Tube coming down with 3 spouts on it and 3 different removal sections of tube so u can adjust height depending on your application. Allows bucks to walk right up and eat along with does, fawns can eat what’s fell over onto ground, the game winner neck has a flow adjustment so you can adjust the flow on the shoots, you can feed corn, protein or a mixture out of these. I use a aluminum lid that bolts over the barrel lip with two wing nut bolts all u have to do is drill a hole for the bolt to run into the barrel and lid isn’t coming off. I’ve had cows get loose from neighbors, knock it over and stand them right back up and lid still be on it. Holds about 500lbs of corn. Total. And best part is I done it all for under $200. Go find a 500 lb feeder for less then $200.

Bad thing about using metal is that it sweats and it holds moisture and it doesn’t breathe and it causes your corn to turn bad

It is not bear-proof. Actually it is a good idea and I guess to add one improvement - the hole in bottom should be open just during daylight. It will be not the cheapest feeder, but most efficient :)

@@AppalachianFarmHandChannel thank you. I thought about such type of feeder for years. Simply timing distribution does not work. From some point of season deer switch to night movement only. Such light sencetive door could push them to come on day time.

In my area (WV) I have other problem - a lot of bear. I have to use the steel barrel and steel chains instead. Otherwise the bear just pulls it out, grabs in tho the wood. Once I found the feeder about 200 yards from its location and fully smashed :/

@@andreilebedev6722 that’s genius right there. I think this made out of a metal feed can might be more efficient. Bears wouldn’t destroy it, and you could add one of the solar powered doors to it on a timer… probably a little more expensive but might be worth the extra $$$

Not a good idea to put corn on the ground. Deer will eat it fast but you do not want it to get moldy.... also you state steep learning curve on the drone but then you state super easy...wt.....
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel 10 месяцев назад
Gary I appreciate the comment! I agree this limits the amount that you’re leaving in a pile on the ground so it doesn’t get eaten rapidly or wasted. And the lid keeps the water from molding the corn… mostly As for the drone the technology is pretty straight forward it’s just controlling it while its flying that a little difficult. I hope you decide to stick around!

using a drone on your channel requires FAA certification ... and the fine is pretty stiff. May want to consult your lawyer. (BTW, google how to edit video)
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel 11 месяцев назад
David. You seem like a delight to be around from the contents of your comment. Drones under 55lbs used for recreational use such as surveying private property do not require an FAA certification, and as long as I’m not scouting to locate game it is legal by DNR’s standards, so I don’t think consulting my attorney is necessary. Secondly, David I have also been through your channel and would recommend using Google for editing research as well. Lastly David, you’re commenting on a video that is well over a year old, but I appreciate your support of the channel. Stick around and I’m sure there is some content you will enjoy! Have a great day and God bless you!

thanks for the reply . . . the YT channel you mentioned is not my biz page so I wont defend what videos are on there about its quality . . my BIZ page I certainly would welcome your comments on. Now back to my input . . .you sir are INCORRECT. Using ANY drone (even below 250g) for commercial purposes require a Part 107 certificate IF its used on a monetized biz channel (which @@AppalachianFarmHandChannelis considered a biz channel . . right?). Do what you think is best, BUT if you want we can absolutely engage the FAA so that you aren't relying on my input, let me know I'm happy to reach out on your behalf. Your page/video was sent to me or I'm pretty sure I would have never seen it -- so its possible 'they' already reported it ?!? IF you really want to discuss or need clarification of the regulations, let me know I'd be happy to help with the rules -- or again, do whatever you think is best.

David, I recreationally make videos. If you’d like to report my video because you think that my RU-vid page is a hazard to the great people of the Appalachian Mountains of VA, be my guest. In order to receive my Master of Engineering from the University of Virginia I did extensive research on drone usage, the progression of legislation and how it pertains to drones and recreational aviation, the progression of commercial use of drones in structural engineering specifically pertaining to bridges in VA, as well the differentiation between commercial and recreational uses of UAV’s and UAS’s. I’ve had my page reported before in other instances, and will deal with it further if you deem it necessary. However David, we could just save each other the time and effort, and let the water pass under this bridge. Either way, do me a favor and have a blessed day. 👍❤️
@davidcooper2951
@davidcooper2951 11 месяцев назад
OH this is comical . . . so you have a Masters in Engineering -- congrats ! May I suggest you consult someone else on how to interpret FAA/DOT regulations as you obviously can't understand the absolute basic principal on the difference between Part 107 and 'recreational' usage. Again, don't listen to me, I don't have an Master in Engineering . . . I sincerely hope you continue to think what you think you know and BAM someone actually enlightens you to where you can comprehend . . maybe a diagram or spreadsheet would do it? By the way, one other tip -- don't show your drone doesn't have the required registration in your videos, thats a slam dunk . . .kinda hard to say its registered when the video clearly shows that the required placard isn't visible. If you feel its necessary to continue to reply and spin from the original topic, I'm happy to reply during my blessed day.
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel
@AppalachianFarmHandChannel 11 месяцев назад
@@davidcooper2951 Well David, you are replying to my page where I’m notified every time you comment, to ensure I respond. The fact that I have a Master of Engineering is moot, the point I was making is that I’ve performed extensive research on drones. Not only immersing my self in legislation but into the history and usage of drones in modern commercial applications. Your reference to the FAAs small UAS Rule would require me to obtain a commercial drone pilot license, if I were using it for commercial purposes. However, I recreationally fly my drone around a private property, in order to recreationally produce videos for my RU-vid channel that I run recreationally. How would it make you feel if I just said you were correct, would that make you feel satisfied? We could also just take that route, because David I’m beginning to think that your blessed day is being occupied by extensive drone research. Which I’ve done a lot of and can tell you from experience is not fun. I do however hope that your day is more blessed than the day you had prior to our conversation beginning.
