I made countertops for my home in a similar fashion. I used MDF board instead of plywood and 45 mitre cut the edge boards. Before applying the contact adhesive you've GOT to make sure there isn't any dust or sawdust on either surface, otherwise you'll regret seeing those little bumps after bonding. Another way to apply the laminate is take a long, 50' extension cord, wipe it totally clean, then lay it onto the flat surface once the cement has tacked up in a back and forth S pattern. Just like you did, start at one end after properly aligning and use the roller to put pressure on the laminate. As you work your way across, slowly pull the extension cord out from under the laminate. I used a 45 cutter instead of the round over bit. The laminate edge is VERY sharp after cutting so taking a file to the edge to knock off the knife edge is a good idea as it can cut you.

Really sharp-looking job! I'll email you my shipping address! lol Only thing I've done differently on sticking down the laminate that someone doing it for the first time might consider, is to pull the sticks out from the middle instead of one end. Minor differences in how the sticks are spaced and how much is sagging between them or not, can over a long enough run end up with the laminate skewed too far to one side or the other by the time you reach the other end of a long piece (depending on how much overlap you left when cutting it), causing you end up partly exposed on one of the corners. Sticking it down from the middle out, cuts this possible skew in half. But yours looks great! I just mean as general advice, to help eliminate a possible problem.

I found a desk at value village for $20 it was only a generic desk with a riser actually really nice but I ended up extending it by adding a 4ft board so that it takes up almost my entire wall lol. It added so much space, oh and I used the the riser for a wall mount piece to hang over our fancy coffee station, I love making something out of nothing. Looked up the value of the desk I bought too after and it was originally a $300 desk so pretty sick find.

Love the build and thanks for the great ideas. I have an uplift corner desk but lookin to go a rectangle. I am curious if you can router the veneer and the banding so you have a smooth transition from the side to the top without the little bump up you had. I like the look of how you did it but that little ledge bugs my arms so curious if you think I can smooth it out.

@carterscustomrods
@carterscustomrods 2 года назад
I've done a large laminate once... ONCE!!! I'll never do that again. If using laminate or veneer, I do it with sections now; versus the 1 large panel. It allows the glue and rolling process to be a lot less nightmarish, while preventing any smaller air bubbles from sneeking in. It also gives you more artistic ability for things like mosaic designs.
@McMonkeyful
@McMonkeyful Год назад
Beautiful desk. I love the black formica. One tip. If you can find a small piece of acrylic I'd recommend making a lengthened base for your trim router. It needs to be as wide as the original base & 2-3 times as long. Cut a hole at one end for your bits + the screws & attach a small handle at the opposite end, which you can also trim down into a pointed taper. This base gives great stability when doing jobs like trimming the edges, preventing the router from tipping. Only takes a few minutes to make & can be installed when needed. Looks like you had a steady hand on this project but it is very easy to tip & gouge into your walnut with the standard 'square' base.

You can also just buy the laminate already attached to a 4x8 and add your edge trim so you don't have to worry about the glue up process of the laminate sheeting. This project is more of a laminate than a plywood craft though. It did turn out nice!
