I made this diy disinfectant wipe today. I love this and this will save me so much money because 1 roll of PT will make 2 batches. I used the lysol multi surface cleaner instead. And i honestly cannot tell the difference between this and the actual wipes i bought in the store. This method is just cheaper and i like this better. Appreciate this video
After using these wipes for many months, I definitely prefer and recommend making the alcohol wipes over the bleach ones! They hold up long term and stay wet. I have made these several more times and still wipe off our car steering wheels and handles, and house door handles after returning from being out.
Some stores are slowly starting to get things back in. Hopefully you will find what you need. Walmart had the container (stand upon I mentioned, which works best) and I saw paper towels at Aldi and Walmart. Best of luck!
This is a great idea since wipes are hard to find now. For virus disinfection CDC recommends products with at least 70% alcohol, so use ¼ c water and ¾ cup 99% isopropyl alcohol for homemade wipes. For bleach wipes they recommend 4 teaspoons bleach per quart (approx 4 cups) of water or 1/3 cup bleach per gallon of water. Thanks, Sandy, and be safe everyone!
Hi Marcie! Thanks for watching and for your comment! I do agree that specifically to kill the coronavirus more alcohol would be needed. This is one nasty, and scary virus that is impacting our world. I have made this recipe forever to use in our home but will use the bleach wipes more now to kill the coronavirus. You stay safe too!
Great info. Suggestion in your city or where everyone lives if you can find it buy disinfect in a spray bottle then pour over your paper towels to make disinfect wipes. It will last longer and no bleach to worry about.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing - very informative. Apologies for my ignorance, but can I use either recipe for disinfecting (against the COVID virus) or are there specific applications where one should be used over the other? Asking because in my area bleach is easier to acquire than rubbing alcohol.
I definitely recommend making the ones using the isopropyl alcohol! I have made several batches. Long term, the one with isoporpyl alcohol are definitely better, Richard. The paper towels held up for a really long time. The paper towels with the bleach solution disintegrated after a while.
Great video! If I have a jug of Clorox Clean Up or Fantastik or something like that, can I use that by itself instead of the bleach/water or dishwashing/alcohol solution?
i used lysol multi surface cleaner liquid instead of the bleach/alcohol as the disinfectant because it has the same ingredients as the lysol wipes. It works well but i only used 1 cup water and 1/2 cup lysol because i dont like my wipes dripping wet which makes a mess
I've read bleach loses effectiveness after 24 hours. The revised measurements you have below for alcohol disinfecting wipes, how any days would you say the wipes are effective for? Just wondering how often I should be making them. I primarily need them to wipe down groceries. Please let me know, thank you!
I prefer the alcohol ones. Those are the ones I make and use the most because they keep for a long time. Many have said bleach loses effectiveness, which I am sure is correct. So if using bleach, make small batches so it stays an effective disinfectant.
Hi! You can also use wet mop refills and add your own disinfectants to the already wet ones or use the dry ones and add your own mix in a reused container from old wipes. That kind of material holds up far better than paper towels. Also, you can get 15 in a pack at the dollar tree. There is other cloth like wipes of a similar material there and these can be cut to size and used the same way.
YEs, bleach will disinfect. The alcohol ones are my favorite to use though. They don't make my hands feel yucky like the bleach does. Just note, my bleach bottle does not say anything about being ineffective after a certain amount of time but, others have commented that their bleach bottle says it is ineffective after 48 hours. See what your bottle says. I wanted to make you aware.
I wouldn't add it to the bleach one, but I would to alcohol. After using these for a long time, I definitely prefer the alcohol wipes!! They hold up better. Plus there are certain essential oils that you can use that gives additional antibacterial properties.
The thing about disinfectants is, most of them also have some kind of bleaching action. Even Isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Personally, I would dilute alcohol OR hydrogen peroxide with water and use it on a test area that you can't see. Use a mixture of alcohol and water or hydrogen peroxide and water as a spray. If it doesn't discolor the test area, you should be fine. I made a video on hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant also. Or you could make a soap and water mixture and using a cotton cloth, wipe down your cloth furniture. Soap and water is effective at killing viruses. Let me know if this helps.
Yes, you can. Diluting it helps it to last longer, but if you want to use it full strength to disinfect, go for it. The dish soap gives it some extra cleaning power because soap and water are great at killing germs.
@@sandysteinbrook Thank you! I did exactly the one you made, ( for the bathroom) one with added extra alcohol, ( for the kitchen ) and made one full strength for me when I go out to do my grocery shopping :). It does really help a lot since I couldn't find any wipes anymore. Thank you again
NO. Alcohol at this grade evaporates faster than It can disolve the vírus fat barrier. That is why you should use 70% alcohol. You can dilute It though until you reach the 70% grade.
As stated by others, you need to look at your alcohol ratio as the whole liquid mixture needs to be 65-70% alcohol, not using a 70% alcohol solution. e.g. would need to be 3 cups of alcohol to 1 cup of water.
I have made these wipes for years with this formula to wipe off our counters. I never dreamed I would be wiping off door handles and the interior of my car after arriving home. For the coronavirus I agree after some of you sharing, that the solution needs more alcohol and less water. Thank you for sharing so we can all learn from each other.
thanks for the video, can u plz tell how effective these wipes are for cronavirus n I have 99% isopropyl alcohol should I use the same amount as u did with91% or I reduced a bit, n how long these wipes r effective a day or two
Yes, use the same amount of 99% isopropyl alcohol as you would if it was 91%. NO need to dilute the solution any more than directed. You will have a slightly stronger version, which in turn will help kill viruses quicker.
@@sandysteinbrook it's the same as regular alcohol, just that it's Wintergreen....green...at time I saw your video, I didn't have regular alcohol, but have it now. Thank you so much for getting back to me
No, you can use in the kitchen. The solution isn't a full strength bleach, so you don't have to worry about ingestion. You can wipe off your countertops or cabinet drawer handles etc... Some have noted that bleach loses effectiveness after 48 hours. My bottle doesn't say that but, I am sure it is a thing if others have read this. So make these in small batches to increase effectiveness.
70% solution will also work. I make a cleaner for my home with 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 2 cups water, 1 Tablespoon ammonia and 2 drops of dish soap. It makes a wonderful disinfectant and kills germs. You could make it and put in a spray bottle and spray areas to be cleaned.
Great tip but disinfecting wipes must be 70% alcohol. If you use the measurements of alcohol/water as stated (2 cups of water to 1/2 cup 95% alcohol) that gives you an alcohol content of 19%, less than 1/3 of the required concentration. Bleach solution is correct if your bleach is 8%, some is 6% and would require more bleach.
Thanks for the comment. I have made the wipes as directed for years, never worrying about the Coronavirus. But your tip is great about increasing the alcohol amount to get it up to a 70% solution. Thanks for sharing!
According to the CDC any bleach cleaning solution made at home, will be good for only 24 hours! You will have to make a new batch every 24 hours for it to be effective!
It depends on what kind of countertops you have. Alcohol and Bleach are safe for most surfaces, but some countertops are porous and requires special cleaning agents. Do a google check with your particular countertop surface to make sure it is ok to use isopropyl alcohol or bleach solution.
Hey Sally! I've used this disinfectant recipe for a long time and it will definitely help kill germs on surfaces. This covid-19 is a different ballgame. I would increase the alcohol amount based on trying to specifically kill covid- 19 or use the bleach wipes. I'm glad you found paper towels to make yours!
Linda, the bleach will definitely mess up your colored clothes if it gets splashed on them. I have ruined many clothes over the years because of bleach. ugh. After its on the wipes, it is easy to keep away from clothes when cleaning surfaces. I always wash my hands after using so I don't have bleach sitting on the hands.
Well, shoot. I wonder if the container was too small and the paper towels smashed too tightly to come out easily? Some people recommended to use dry swiller mop pads (generic kind) and cut in half. Hopefully you can use the torn pieces to still wipe off your phone, cans from the grocery, car handles etc. so they don't go to waste.
I did the same exact same thing. I used Bounty and even did it twice because I thought I did the measurements wrong. I bought the exact same container that Sandy purchased from Walmart. My towels teared so bad they were in shreds. Disappointing.
I am going to buy some blue shop paper towels from Home Depot and try it again. They look like they might hold up better than Bounty. It is worth a try.
@@cherylemccormick1724, I am sorry to hear yours did not turn out the same as the ones I made. I definitely like the texture of the alcohol wipes better than the bleach ones.
@@cherylemccormick1724, will you let me know if the shop towels turn out better? They seem more durable. Others have recommended the blue shop towels or a plain swiller like fabric.
Thanks, Ann. I've been making this recipe for a long time to disinfect the countertops in our home.. You are probably correct about needing more alcohol to specifically kill Covid 19. I would use 3/4 to 1 cup of alcohol to be safe. This coronavirus is pretty scary so far.
Sandy Steinbrook yes I know it is very scary, I’m from Europe and it’s been crazy... I work as nurse, you have to make sure you will keep at least 70% of alcohol to ‘kill’ the virus. Hope all is well with you and family, friends etc... Stay safe and stay healthy! Thanks for the video!
It seems to be a nationwide problem. :( Our local Walmart happened to get in a huge supply. At the rate people are buying it, I bet it was gone quickly. Hopefully you can find some when a store gets a shipment. If not, the bleach wipes also are great for killing germs.
