First, I love that you share your mistakes. I don't feel so alone. 🙂 Second, really nice build, done in just 14 minutes! Great material choices, and nothing is over- or under-done construction-wise. Last, I love the choice of that hardwood top for the drawer case. That is a really nice finishing touch that makes the project pop! Thanks so much for this video. Bookmarking it.

Closet renovation is a great project for beginners and intermediate woodworkers. Designing, plywood carcass build, drawer construction, installing slides, edge banding, working with uneven walls and more. A lot of valuable all around experience is gained by tackling this type of build. Great stuff, Matt! 🤛🏽🇺🇸

WOW!! I've was a cabinet builder my entire adult life and I don't think I have ever seen a closet designed and built that a - used space so efficiently and b - also looked so good. Usually it is one or the other..... by that I mean usually pretty closets sacrifice space to be proportional. That turned out amazing.

You and I are a lot a like. Your mannerisms and phrasing is just like me. I’m a white guy from Dallas,TX . My wife is Puerto Rican from New Jersey. She can hear you narrating your videos when I’m watching it on my phone. Yesterday you said Waller when talking about handling TubaFours and today when you cabinet fell you said “I almost died” . I’m sure there a ton of guys like us out there. I think why you’ve been so successful because are relatable. Keep up the great work!!

Fun stuff. The first thing I ever built was converting our under stair closet to a pantry. The couple cupboards meant to be our pantry would never have been enough. Plus if the food isn't visible to my wife and kids in a deep cupboard it might as well not exist. Second project was a closet redesign. We downsized from a 2,800 sq ft house way out at the edge of the suburbs to a 1,700 sq ft two story condo. Talk about NEEDING to maximize space. Although now that I've watched your video I'm thinking mine kind of looks like crap and I should redo it :) Anyway it was the first things I ever did that required tools more than a drill. I had a blast.

Matt, I know you have some tool recommendations in your videos, but (and I don't know exactly what I'm asking here) all my stuff seems to break way too fast. I bought a sliding ryobi compound miter saw as my first "big" purchase. I've not used it all that much, but I think it's already not cutting a perfect straight line. I tried to watch a video on aligning it, but maybe I'm too dumb. I can't figure out what's wrong. I haven't even burned through 1 blade yet. I replaced the moulding in our home (that's a suck job btw), and already my ryobi brad nailer has stopped shooting out brads. I used the 3 in 1 oil. I cleaned it. I've tried to figure out if something was jammed. Watched videos on taking it apart, but haven't gotten the guts to try that. I also bought a hand held airless paint sprayer for like $200 a couple years ago. The damn thing after a few projects (like repainting the closet, laundry room, and interior doors) is already spraying badly and dripping. I cleaned it after every use. Kept good care of it. So I bought a new spray tip. That didn't solve the problem. I feel like this pattern is a "me problem". I don't know. I'm just frustrated that I'm just a guy doing household projects here and there and none of my tools (except my drill) ever seem to last. All together that's probably around $600 worth of tools that aren't working properly. It's frustrating.

How do you measure the drawers themselves? I have a heck of a time making the drawers the right size for the opening I have. I end up with (on a 4 drawer cabinet) four drawers all different sizes. I am definitely over thinking it, but every time I have to make drawers, I just dread it. It would be nice to see some video showing how to calculate drawer sizes and the gap between them and everything.
@russmartin4189
@russmartin4189 2 года назад
Nice job. It appears you wanted to go with the raw wood look. My wife may have me build one, but I know she would want it stained and finished. In that case, I would make all the pieces in the garage, , predrill all the holes. edge band and sand, stain and finish, then assemble in the closet. It would be a lot more work than what you did. In the end, it might take me a month with finishing all the pieces before assembly

Do you have a method of tracking projects as they come into your shop? I’m thinking of having some kind of work ticket system with requirement details, client info, due dates, design info on a clipboard hanging on the wall that I can keep updated and invoice from. If you have a system maybe that would be a good topic for a video.

731 why not use shelf pins for flexibility/modularity than "permanently" fixing the shelves with pocket holes. Was it just a matter of what was on hand vs what would need to be purchased?
@Anthony-H
@Anthony-H 2 года назад
I think a bunch of shelf pin holes makes a project look like you bought it from a big box store. A custom piece shouldn't have those and looks much more "finished" in my opinion.
@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 2 года назад
I don’t like shelf pins. At all. I don’t like how they look. It looks to me like they are pre fabbed store bought instead of custom built ins
@KITDFOHS
@KITDFOHS 2 года назад
@@Anthony-H no doubt it looks "cleaner" without them. And there's the aesthetic factor of everything looks dress right dress, however looking pretty and being functional are two separate things that must be balanced. I agree a line of shelf pins holes up the verticals looks terrible and cheap from a big box store. I like to put 3 or 4 pin holes at each shelf to allow for some adjustments based on needs. Kid's closets are a perfect use application as they grow their clothes get bigger.
