What other shop projects would you use the dovetail system on instead of t-tracks?

My recent shop work table has dovetails in it as well as dog holes to allow me to clamp, and use the dovetails to hold stops when batching out various pieces when my track saw cutting station is set up.

Dovetailing the front apron of your bench lets you use the clamps to hold a board vertical for tasks like planing. And one or two runs the length of your bench surface about 12" apart should let you clamp just about anything down quickly. That combination now lets you clamp two boards at right angles to screw them together. A person in seriously limited space without room for a bench or assembly table (think one car garage with needing to park the car there at night) can make a flexible clamping, gluing surface, maybe 3'x4', that mounts on a table saw quickly and just leans against the wall when not needed. This can also be a 2nd work surface for those that might make use of it on occasion, or for contractor types, transports easily to a job site. Also, if you have a track saw (I have a Shop Fox), you'll notice the Microjig metal clamps will work just fine in its slots, so that means you could take your nearly identical clamps that came with the track saw and set up a jig to grind them to 14 degrees, and now you have two extra clamps for way less then the $45 they sell theirs for.

Very well done. A couple of issues I would run into is the height of the fence and the size of the sliding stop. I've been using a fence that is just an inch tall because I drill some things very close to the fence and anything higher interferes with the chuck. Also, I often need more room for my stop and have whittled mine down to maybe an inch and a half. Other than those two personal idiosyncrasies I think you gave us all a lot of great ideas.
@OneWhoWas
@OneWhoWas 3 года назад
I really like the dovetail integration. That's a nice option from the standard t-track. Well done! I'm going to hunt up some of those clamps for myself. One item, although I'm sure you've considered it, and rules it out for some reason... A round sacraficial insert will give you full rotation for fresh surface. You can size it to your favorite hole saw size for cutting blanks, and if you craft it right, you can make it so you can rotate it without having to adjust your fence to access it. Fan of the channel, subscribing. 👍
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop 3 года назад
Thanks for the support! I’ve never seen a round insert and it may not be a bad idea as long as it doesn’t move while in place too much
@austinhavens3058
@austinhavens3058 3 года назад
The round insert should work very well. In the printing business, (62 years), we used a paper drill to drill stacks of paper. It was a hard Wood piece with a counter sink screw in the center. That kept it stable and make it easy to rotate the exact distance needed. We purchased the inserts from a printing/bindery source in dozen pieces. They probably could be home made with a large hole saw drill.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects ru-vid.comUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

The author does like to from scratch, ru-vid.comUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

I know this video has been up for a while in RU-vid time, but I used it to build a table for my drill press and it works great. I made a circle for the sacrificial piece and it has been fine, but if it was a little loose, you could put rubber cement on the bottom of the piece, let it dry and then put it in and it will have some grip, or make a little shim. My only advice otherwise is to consider how tall the clamps are, and make sure that the groove you make on the right side of the table won’t cause the clamp to interfere with the turning of the handles on the drill. I didn’t notice the first time I watched, but I may have to put a groove parallel to the fence that is close to the fence. I just realized that if you turn the clamp the other way around in that groove, the clamp itself can be the stop block, assuming you are using the fence and the second clamp is holding the piece down. Hm, will have to try that when I get home. I have a tiny workshop, it’s actually a bathroom rough-in, but I use those clamps to attach my router table to the end of my workbench (along with supports), but it can easily be taken down to save space. Anyway, all this is to say thanks for the inspiration!

The offset backer is a great idea, slightly larger for big forstner bits though maybe. However I feel t track is probably a better fit for this project, as you can rotate it side to side and have many approaches to clamping pieces, vs the straight on only of the dovetail clamp. Where I do think the dovetail clamp would kill it would be tapering jigs, allowing clamping closer to the blade. And possibly one off router templates?
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop 4 года назад
I definitely see what your saying about the t-track on this particular project. I have not ran into a issue with it not being versatile enough at this point but being able to swivel a clamp vs straight on would be a great addition. I use them on my tapering jig along with t-tracks and love that combo for that jig. Thank you for that comment and input. I’m always looking for input on how to improve projects and conversations like this are more than helpful.

To make things go easier and save both your router and router bit and I believe it even states in the instructions it is best to cut a dado slightly smaller than the dovetail first. Great project otherwise and the clamps are a very versatile tool.

This is an awesome project that will really help upgrade my drill press. I use a mortising attachment (a drill in the center of a square chisel) in my drill press to make mortises, and I need a way to integrate a vertical clamp to hold the work piece down as my mortise drill rises. I’m thinking a vertical slot in the stop block might work. Any suggestions?
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop

@PenaltyBoxWoodshop

My guess would be to move the fence back and adjust it so that the edge your drilling against is the one away from the fence. If that makes since. Basically instead of positioning the piece with the hole being drilled against the fence position it so that edge is the one opposite and away from the fence.

I've just discovered your channel after watching your Instructable for the dovetailed vise. I'm just starting out, and don't have much of a disposable income, therefore I don't have access to many of the tools that you are using. (Bench saw, router table, etc) After moving into my current house, the previous owner left a drill press and a 2 wheeled grinder/polisher. Anyway, my point....what are the basic tools that you would recommend that anyone starting out should have in their workshop? U.K. Based, so don't have much space when it comes to having a workshop...basically a large shed!

Penalty Box Woodshop just watched it. Thanks. It looks as though this is going to be an expensive hobby! Sorry, I have another couple of questions. I like to pick the brains of those with more knowledge than me...how else are we noobs supposed to learn? (Read a book? Nope...I want to use tools! lol) Would a portable table saw be a better option, rather than having a large permanent station and a mitre saw? I don't have the space for the sort of table saw that you have, and I don't have the space for both. It's either one or the other for me! Is there such a thing as a modular table? One where a saw unit can be installed, then removed and replaced with a bench router?
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop
@PenaltyBoxWoodshop 3 года назад
Yep to all of those! I portable table saw will work just fine for small beginner projects. Mobility of your tools and smart use of your space is important when running a small shop so a table that you can interchange tools is a great idea

Those were just around the shop and I used them. Not sure but I think I got them from Lowe’s or homedepot. I’ll have to search around to see if I can find some similar ones.

@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I know it’s a year later, but I’m also wondering what you call the circular threaded insert you put on the bottom to mount it to the table. Do you know what this is called? I’m trying to find where I can get one. Thanks!

IN that captured golf ball, instead of hogging out the holes, why not use a router with a straight bit to make your elongated holes. Would be faster and more precise.

I guess you could but it would have to be one hell of a bit haha

It's a nice table. Though your method of securing it to the drill press table made me laugh. I would have allowed for and installed T-bolts through the bottom plate to go through the slots in the drill press table. And probably would have keyed it. Just my machinist/tool make background coming out.

+Benz Babecki hahah well, I’m glad you got a laugh out of it at least.

@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I like that clamp idea (DP table to CI table) Whose clamps are they?
@KenGehrke
@KenGehrke 2 месяца назад
why don't you just make dove tails under the table, instead of buy hardware and using off market clamps , when you can use Microjig dove tail clamps to clamp the jig to the drill table in any direction. IT IS A MICRIOJIG IDEA

No doubt this video would have been much more informative without the annoying music, but it's your video. I just mute the sound.

Sorry Roy, I don’t think it affected how informative it was. Possibly affected how entertaining (to you) it was but I was very informative with the voice overs so I’m sorry you had to mute it. The constant sound of those particular tools isn’t very appealing in my opinion. Thanks for watching though!
