This craft is a fun and easy way to make an Easter themed Piñata! Stuff it with candy and gifts, and then smash it to pieces. Use only under adult supervision.
***
SAFETY and procedure:
Do not touch Plaster of Paris while it is setting up. Clean up with water. Once it has set and dried, egg will be bright white and chalky. If skin contact is a concern, egg shell may then be painted. Do not allow child to eat egg shell. Do not allow egg shell fragments to get into child's eyes. In such cases, flush with water. Do not allow child to sand egg without wearing respiratory protection. Fragmented egg parts will dissolve harmlessly in the grass. Please have fun with this game responsibly.

What about using a much bigger ballon like an XL balloon or a bunch of smaller presents so that you could fit the presents inside the ballon and hold it by the knot so you can plaster everything but the smallest hole preferably around 2 inches across and that could be covered by using a mini ballon and making a covering like that then putting them together with toilet paper and glue. You could pop the balloon inside before joining them or near the end by making a tiny hole that you could stick a pin through. Alternatively you could just make 2 big halves and join them in the middle but I think that would look a bit more noticeable as a seam around the whole middle of the egg rather than the point of the egg looking just a little odd and being the side you could hide. I also think some kind of paper template or structure would add a lot of stability to it.
@vaj1414
@vaj1414 5 лет назад
@@evilcanofdrpepper use a dremel to make the hole perfectly round (and flat). And find a ballon that seems to match the curve, make a cap on it, mark the size of the circle and cut off the excess. if you paint over them the line wont be visible.

pocket83 my idea for the egg problem: The side that has the opening will be put on the bottom, surrounded by grass, so that it creates the illusion of beeing complete. Another idea would be to cover the egg completely, then separate the top, put in the present and seal it up afterwards. I think for this to work it should be made with many coats
@vaj1414
@vaj1414 5 лет назад
you can use gauze to reinforce parts as its much stronger than paper, but keep the top as it is because it creates a mesh like in a wire reinforced glass so the presents would get stuck...
@saintbulmers665

use another balloon, blown to about the same size, and cover the top with plaster. you should be able to glue them together with the same method that you used to repair the crack, and it would allow time to put the gift inside

My thinking exactly! I'm also thinking of adding some kind of support on the inside that overlaps the seam, add soaked strips of paper towel (or newspaper, if you can find one of those) before adding the top, then seal the outside. I'm trying to decide if I could make that the bottom somehow.

Tip: Popping the balloon actually works better than releasing the air out slowly (from personal experience). When popping, the balloon pulls off equally on all sides at once, whereas a deflating balloon separates from the contact points with the weakest grips first, which puts more strain on the parts that are still connected to the balloon. That is what I think caused your crack.

I did the exact same thing but filled with chocolate easter eggs. Except I made them for bigger kids (adults) so I made them really difficult to break into, provided some good entertainment. If anyone tries this don't let anyone use a knife to try to get it open. If you're really struggling use a saw of some sort, or even drill a hole to create a weak point.

Only thing I can think to close that hole would be to stuff the egg with the presents once you have your hole. Then take foam, cut it to fit your hole and lay it across the hole and then close it all back up with the plaster. (Maybe even a paper plate could work?) You could always lightly glue whichever your using (foam or the paper plate to the lip of the egg for closure.) Then plaster it shut, etc.) Then turn the egg upside down so the hole is at the bottom. This way if it looks off, at least the holes closed up and it won’t be seen because you can decorate around it with the fake grass. Thanks for the idea! Definitely going to try this this Easter!

This is PERFECT Jurassic Park week that I do with my students each year. Picture this: lightly coating the inside with some store-bought slime, wrapping the bottom of the a with a baby blanket, and punching your arm through the top with a rubber dinosaur puppet! I have done a similar gag in years past with the paper mache eggs, but there is no way to put your arm up inside of it this will look super convincing and the kids will love it!

To get a perfectly smooth texture just fill a balloon with a few "coats" worth of the plaster of Paris, then blow the balloon up and periodically spin it around to build the egg on the inside. Then when it hardens you can carefully pop the balloon and maybe add more coats to the inside if it is too fragile.
5 лет назад
Idea to close the egg: on a separate balloon, make a dome out of plaster that is slightly bigger than the hole in the egg. Overlap the dome over the hole, and apply a few more coats of plaster, to hide the seam.
@willbeatty9097
@willbeatty9097 5 лет назад
Perhaps to complete the rest of the egg, you could create a much smaller egg segment on a separate balloon, and graft it onto the underside of the egg.
@Amethyst1919
@Amethyst1919 4 года назад
Using a funnel, put desired amount of plaster inside balloon, add water the same way. Blow up balloon and tie off. shake and rotate the balloon to mix the plaster and coat the inside of the balloon. You can do just the partial, but if you do the whole thing you can later take a dremel and cut off a portion to insert the gift and then seal it back up... Makes it really smooth and egg-like...

To do the full egg, do everything you did, but only about 3/5 the full balloon. Get another setup for another balloon going but do the other 2/5 at the tapered portion. Once both shell parts are fully dry, remove the balloons and do a thin layer of watered down white glue or maybe plastidip to give a little extra stability that's still easy to break with a little force. Place the gift inside the larger portion and align the second part, use some white glue to join them, then do another layer of the toilet paper patch across the seam.
@AgentWest

That egg turned out wonderful! It would not have looked as natural if it was sanded. Neat idea about making a decorative nest for it, too. As for closing the egg up completely, why not mold a 'cap' on a different balloon and cover the seam in the same manner as you did that crack. Yes, it will be slightly thicker at the seam, but no one would notice or really care. Another suggestion would be to paper-mache the whole thing. That way it is a little stronger (for when the excited kid tries to shake it like a gift box to guess what's inside) and hopefully will produce larger pieces instead of a bunch of tiny bits when broken. Maybe even make a small beak-shaped hammer to help break it? +1 for Aperture Laboratories at the end as well :)

I have a suggestion, I wonder if coating the entire balloon except for the knot, then when all coats are complete, cut the one end off with a utility knife (allowing balloon to deflate) making sure the opening is large enough to place gift inside. Then place the part back on that you cut off and patch it like you suggested and also close up hole left by the knot.
@jonalexander2859
@jonalexander2859 5 лет назад
you could push the knot into the balloon then tape over it and make a solid shape and cut an access hatch then patch it closed.

To make a whole egg, you could make it in 2 vertical halves and join them with mache strips. If you use single ply of very fine paper for the strips, it should remain brittle enough to crack open. Alternatively, you could mount one side as a hinge (say, with a piece of cloth or some such) and make it open AND close. Then a proper mache treatment might be useful for rigidity.

This is an amazing idea, thanks for sharing! Just pondering... it may be possible to make two at the same time with one being the body of the egg (as you show) with the other simply being a 'cap'. After completed thickness is attained I envision filling the large body of the egg with the gift & grass, then use the smaller 'cap' to cover the hole. This would require additional plaster to join the two portions and make it more or less seamless. If the thickness is substantial enough a light sanding would do wonders for the finished texture, then paint it up.
@Durrdalus
@Durrdalus 5 лет назад
For getting a better texture, some sort of diy sandblaster/airbrush hybrid could work (yay Venturi!). For full egg a shaped styrofoam egg (with a smooth epoxy coating) could work because then you can cut a "broken egg" zig-zag pattern in the middle of the egg, create the top and bottom halves, de-mold them, place the gift inside and 'glue' it back into a single piece with some more plaster. Or do it Kinder Surprise style with 2 clean vertical cut halves.

Depending on the size of the present, you even maybe be able to stretch the balloon enough to put the gift inside before blowing it up. Don't know how you'd pop/remove it after making an entire shell (would make one heck of a potential energy bomb though). Guess the other guy's tip of making 2 halfs is probably better.

I think using foam as the eventual base is just fine. It could be cut into a circle, with another circular cutout. Keep the cutout to plaster in place after the gift is in the egg! I would be curious to see how dipping and drip drying would play out. You could use a wide and shallow pan and sort of roll the balloon through the mixture. The mixture may need to be thickened so it doesn't run as easily.

Get a vacuum chamber, put balloon inside and expand it to put the present inside the balloon. Coat most of the balloon with plaster, carefully deflate balloon, patch tiny hole with tissue paper and plaster. Or Blow up balloon, coat half with plaster, allow to set, remove and set aside, coat second half, allow to set, put present inside, join halves and patch with plaster and tissue. Also, add food coloring to top coat of plaster for colored egg.

for how to close it fully: i thought of an airplane door, it also doesnt fit through the hole it is sitting in. so you could make a shell that closes an oval hole where you insert the cap and then rotate the cap and someway fix it in place
