Not with full scales, in general aviation it´s somewhat common to load the aircraft up tail heavy as that increases your cruise speed a bit.

Hi Peter, Loving the build so far. Just a comment on the elevator control wires. I worked as a Ships Chandler for over a decade and spent quite some time of that manufacturing and repairing the rigging of sailing boats. At 9:08 I noticed you have the elevator cables running through the eyes of the turnbuckle, however there are no thimbles in the wire loops. This is a problem for two reasons: 1. The loops will collapse under load causing the wire to lengthen, changing the consistency of the control inputs. 2. and most serious. Steel wire does not like sharp bends. When under load the wire loops will collapse and form quite a sharp 180 degree bend through the eye causing the wire to fatigue and likely, some of the strands will break. Over time this cycle will continue and end in a catastrophic failure of the connection. In your words "...if you loose the elevator, you're pretty much screwed". Installing wire rope thimbles at this interaction point will prevent this from happening while also preventing chafing of the wire as well. Hate to see you get hurt(or worse) from an easily preventable problem.

Hey Peter, From the car racing world, be careful where those shoulder harnesses are tied into the frame. General rule of thumb is they should mount at least at the same level as your shoulders if not a little above them. If they are mounted below your shoulders, in a hard stop (unplanned landing?) they will compress your shoulders and potentially your spine. Fly safe mate!

Looking great! I can't wait to see this one flying. Make sure you are using nylock nuts or similar so you don't have a critical component come loose in flight (we see this in full scale aviation all the time). Airplanes vibrate a lot, so anything that can get shaken loose will.As I mentioned on your last video, make sure you do some stress testing of the flight controls and ensure that control surface flutter cannot emerge. Also check over the install points of your turnbuckles and the light to make sure they cannot pull out under load.

I'm not an aeronautical engineer and have no experience building aircraft; i only have limited knowledge from flying a pa-28. There are very few things that catch my attention (unlike before where i was practically screaming at the screen): The first is the hinges. This isn't a flaw, (i know you probably know this) but make sure that the hinges are well oiled and wont get stuck. if that gets stuck on full down or up then you are gonna need that parachute. it probably wont fail, but Murphy's law.. i know you also said they're industrial strength, but be careful. Remember; there are incredible amounts of force pushing on these in all directions, and this could increase the friction between the moving parts which could make it lock up. personally, i would say double up on the control lines, but that is me being paranoid. i know you got it from a heavier ultralight that should work for yours, but remember they will be holding the control surfaces against the wind and be taking the weight of the air hitting the control surface, which is a lot, even though you'll be flying slowly. good idea with the elevator control being on the outside for easier access. +1. i would recommend (if you aren't already planning on putting this in) is the scissor hinge on the rudder pedals. i'm sure you know what they are, but just in the odd chance you don't, would recommend you search them up and makes sure to include them so you don't mix inputs to the rudder and overload the control lines (just for safety). just remember to check everything, since it is always the most smallest, stupidest things that do you over big time. (i speak from experience) i recommend this because i *really* want you to over engineer this aircraft. if you under engineer it, you wont won't be able to change it later best of luck with the future of the project fly safe.

Ryan M. Lack of maintenance on the rear elevator jack screw on a commercial flight led to the aircraft pitching and then rolling over and going into the ground. Mechanics found on manslaughter charges. I believe it was flight 261 Alaska Airlines

Move your harness a little higher. In driftcars it should be horizontal or max 20 degrees down, because if its mounted lower it will compress your spine in case of an accident. I guess for planes it should be the same.

From my experiences in gliding, it doesn't really make a difference. That being said, crashing in a sailplane is a pretty much guaranteed death. I've just realised I misread the comment. Disregard what I said!
@wgmskiing
@wgmskiing 6 лет назад
The shoulder harness attach points should definitely be a bit higher. I did notice the hip belt was riding pretty high, you may need to tighten the hip belt more before you tighten the shoulder straps, or have a more forward mounting point for the hip belt.
@ashibilev
@ashibilev 6 лет назад
The hipbelt problem can be solved either that way or just getting a 5 or 6 point harnes+the same thing. Actually going with more than 4 points is a lot better anyways.

Hey Peter! These videos are great, your craftsmanship is super good and i believe this plane is going to be a super interesting project. I'm a pilot and I'm graduating as an Aerospace engineer, just wanted to give you a quick consideration about those pitch control cables. Having them outside your fuselage may be a little dangerous for different reasons... Cables aligned parallel to the airflow (along an incostant flow pressure) may lead to vibration/oscillation, which means it's usually safer to have them perpendicular to the airflow (see those biplane wingstruts). Altough at those speeds it shouldn't be a major issue, it could lead to controls inaccuracy. Having the cables exposed could also bring accidental damaging during ground operations such as moving/transporting the aircraft, and, even if it might seem a bit odd, could be very dangerous in case of bird strike, which i thought was an incredibly rare event until it happened to me twice in a year of flying. There's plenty of room inside that fuselage, I'm sure you can come out with something way better than having those cables exposed all along the plane. Keep up the good work, good luck!

Hi Peter, I wanted to make two main suggestions. 1. See if the local EAA can come by and look at your build and I am sure they would have some great suggestions. 2. Flight Instruction. If you could come out to Arizona I would be happy to work with you in my Cessna 150 but if you could find someone local they could give you some invaluable experience. With your experience I do not think it would take too many hours to get you soloed, but I think it would be the best thing you could do for your safety. My last comment is on your current video. The plane looks great and am happy you bought AN parts. I would suggest one change to your shoulder harness belts. Those AN bolts will pull right through those aluminum channels you have them bolted through. You will need to beef that up. The other issue is you have them mounted too low. I can send you pictures of my Cessna aftermarket mounting of a 4 point harness. They need to mount above your shoulders. Nice work on the plane and videos. Please take me up on my offer or look local for some instruction.

Todd Bevins Definitely agree on the flight instruction- even if it's just getting to solo standard on a microlight- there are a lot of things to be learned -like how a landing approach and flare should look and feel, as well as memory items for engine failure on take-off, for example.

There is a big difference in flying a full size plane and flying an RC plane. If Peter has never flown a plane before he will have a bit of a learning curve even with his RC experience. To make matters more complicated we are dealing with a maiden flight of an experimental homebuilt. Another factor is light aircraft are harder to fly than larger heavier craft. Look at the crash statistics with light sport planes. Most of the accidents are by higher time pilots. Smaller planes are much more affected by wind than heavier certified aircraft. If Peter does not get some instruction I am concerned. Also it would be a great idea to have someone from the local EAA to come look at his build. They have experience in building exactly this type of plane. It may be fun to trail blaze but it is not like someone has not been down this road before him that can save him alot of headache and possibly his life.

Peter, i love that you are doing this. I wouldn't have the patience to document the build the way you do or at all for that matter. And i think there should be thimble eyes on the ends of the cables where they go into the eye bolts. They spread the load over more cable and reduce the sharp point load. I'm not an aircraft builder but do fix machines in my job and have worked with steel cables in a past job. Thimble eyes. Do it! Stay safe!

Remember to add washers, to prevent damage to the really nice structure you made, and some type of thread locker on those bolts and nuts. (I can't see if your nuts are already locking nuts with nylon rings) If you don't, they'll eventually come loose due to vibrations caused by uneven aerodinamic forces (like prop wash or simply crosswind) and slight imbalances on the motors themselves...

Please learn to crimp cables properly if you want to live. I feel like you are sorely underestimating the aerodynamic forces and vibration the parts you have will be subjected too. Borrow a real crimper and get a copy of the FAA's AC 43.13-1B for examples of safe techniques you can use to complete basic tasks such as this before you end up injured or worse. Sincerely, A concerned Aircraft Mechanic

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I ran a Kubota lawn tractor that used cables to raise the deck and those would break all the time. I learned I had to throttle down and raise it slowly to baby them into being functional. I was basically neurotically thinking about those cables.
@SFWDalmont
@SFWDalmont 6 лет назад
Its a scary thought. Cables in the aviation world are normally inspected regularly and replaced when frayed even slightly out of tolerance. Lives have been lost from these types of mistakes; we have over a century of experience to draw from and most resources are free. There is absolutely no reason to needlessly put your life and the lives of those on the ground in danger because you can't be bothered to do proper research. I could keep nitpicking, but there is no way this thing will pass the experimental aircraft condition inspection, unless some serious changes are made. Honestly, this type of thing is why they made those laws in the first place. I want to see it fly, but not at the expense of safety.

That's a really dumb question, clearly if he is smart enough to build a plane he can figure out how to burn the house down above to get it out of the way,...duu... :)

Awesome craftsmanship. I can tell you have years of engineering. I'd go flying with this but then again I am nuts.

Suggestion on the harness. You should mount the shoulder straps higher (above the horizontal plain of the top of your shoulders). How it is now, any harsh forward momentum *your body* will exert (as in a forward crash) the shoulder straps will cause spinal compression. This is in SCCA regulations as far as a race harness is concerned..... because racecar :p

Just make sure to check the ends of those cables each and every flight and replace when frayed. There are plenty of recorded crashes because those cables snapped where it meets the crimp and the wings fold and they come down fast n hard.

Very good project Peter. I wanted to build a plane similar to yours three years ago, but I did not have the place and the time. Do not stop, your project is very interesting to watch.
