Do you have an enclosed trailer that needs a little lovin'? Try installing an epoxy floor! An epoxy floor will help keep the trailer looking nice, and since it's so easy to clean, your trailer will stay looking great!
We took this enclosed car hauler used to transport Stella The VW Photo Bus, a 1972 Volkswagen Bus that has been converted into a unique photo booth. Stella has made many appearances in weddings, grand opening events, work parties, baby showers, school dances, holiday parties, parades, car shows, and fairs. Stella's old trailer was needing some renovation and some sprucing up, so we applied an epoxy floor in a complementary color, then painted the walls to match.
This is the first of a series of videos designed to give you, the DIYer, the know-how to pull off your own unique and transformative projects in your spaces. Make sure you're subscribed to not miss anything!

Just wondering, How is the epoxy coating holding up in your enclosed trailer ? Would you do it over again ? Did you paint the walls ? I have a enclosed trailer for my car and after watching your video I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my trailer, you did a beautiful job on your trailer looks great

I like these products. As for the structure, I glue together two pieces of .5” CDX. Avoid OSB. Lap the joints. Buy 1” steel edge caps. Make you floor in edge-capped panels. Use bondo cat hair to fill voids. Finish the top with epoxy paint. Water cannot enter the edge caps. You can spot weld the butted edge caps if you need to. The advantage of this system is that you get structure within the 1” and that spans framing members. Bed line the underside before you bolt the panels down. These products you feature here would work well with this floor system.

Great video. Building out a beach runner trailer to camper. Looking for a way to put down those large vinyl floor stickers that look like the ocean with dolphins swimming. Then thinking of putting down a thick clearcoat epoxy. Saw in other comments to ad sure grip (sp) to prevent slipping. Can this be done? Don't want $200- $400 worth of vinyl sticker and epoxy to just crack or disintegrate.
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
While there are many companies that put epoxy over vinyl stickers, we generally don't recommend that, since the epoxy doesn't adhere well to the vinyl. In a trailer situation, I would think the constant movement would cause delamination of the epoxy from the vinyl. I would recommend looking into our Trans4loor Metallic System if you're looking to emulate an ocean scene. That would hold up better than an epoxy over a vinyl sticker.

Great video..I plan on doing this to my car hauler over the winter. Couple questions -- can you provide a link to the scraper tool and the flooring shoes/sandals you wore? Finally -- what is the grit on the black pad that you used to sand/scuff?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 2 года назад
Hi Robert! We used something similar to this scraper - www.krafttool.com/GG018 and these shoes - diyconcrete.com/collections/tools-and-accessories/products/tools-accessories-spiked-shoes. The sanding screen used to sand the bare wood was a 100 grit. To scuff up the surface between coats of clear topcoats we used just a regular black pad available for floor buffers. Thanks!

Can you add tie down hooks after you've done the floor or is it recommended to put them in before you do the floor?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 4 года назад
If they are surface mounted, they would probably be easier to mount after the epoxy is down. You need to use a bit of caution, however, since epoxies are generally not designed to handle the shear forces created by drilling, so make sure you start with a small pilot hole and step up a few times. For this particular trailer, there were tie down anchor points installed from the factory that we removed before application and re-installed after the floor was done.

How about a video on how to keep dust out of a cargo trailer. Seem to have dust in ours any time we open the door after traveling on a dirt road
@ModelHomeDeals
@ModelHomeDeals 3 года назад
From what I've seen could be a couple of things. 1st is it a hauler or camper? Many times trailers can have gaps where the floor meets the walls. Also check where the walls meet the roof line g or gaps. Fill with spray foam. Do you have a skylight with a fan? If so reverse the fan so it pulls air from outside in. Create positive sir pressure. Put a filter on top of the fan set inside the dome cap. Keep cap open hopefully installed where it opens aerodynamically. What running the top fan to pull air in from top does is push air pressure out those little side vents. So dust can't blow in. Hopefully vents also installed facing down or down wind. Try taping up a small filter over the air vents while traveling.
@tommyodonovan3883
@tommyodonovan3883 3 года назад
You need to pressurize it, the off-road trailers have them, fan filter positive pressure, keeps out all the dust.

Just looking for clarification- 1 year ago you said the cost is usually $1.50-$2.00 per SF and 6 months ago you replied to Richard and said the kit can be purchased for around $4.65 (or so) per SF. I know costs have gone up on everything, but is that the case here or am I missing something? Thanks!

How did you handle getting material from the main trailer to the ramp?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
We treated the two as separate floors, actually. We applied epoxy to the main trailer part, collected the excess, then applied additional epoxy to the ramp. The gap between the two was too large to try to move epoxy from one to the other.

How long does this last in the long run? Does the flexing of the trailer ever crack the epoxy?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 4 года назад
Great question! We've done a handful of these over the last five years, and none of them have cracked yet. That's one of the reasons to apply the Elastoshield over the seams and then over the whole surface.

I had the same question. When I called the manufacturer they discouraged me from using epoxy for that reason. Definitely interested in the Elastoshield approach.

@FenixTV4Me

Dogs can scratch it, yes, but usually don't. Dog urine, however, can be a bigger issue. Depending on what paint you use, there shouldn't be any issues with water whatsoever.

Do these products has an major odor while using them? What kind of working time do you have with each?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
The epoxies have a slight plastic smell, but nothing offensive. The polyaspartics do have solvent, so they will have a harsher smell and need to be done with proper ventilation. Working time for epoxies is 30-40 minutes, for the polyaspartics it is more like 10-20 minutes.

One more question, what about antiskid? Which part of the process could an antiskid additive be included?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
You would want to broadcast your anti-skid, such as Surecrete's SureGrip or Concrete Coatings' SlipGrip into the topcoat before bankrolling, to ensure it gets fully encapsulated. This works especially well on the tailgate, which has a slope and is exposed to the elements when open.

What is the purpose of the Polyaspartics coat? Also what do you mean by Stay En Mass when referencing the UV coat vs the Polyaspartics coat? Also is there any restriction to doing multiples coats of the epoxy? special instructions?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
The polyaspartic coat is used as the final top coat due to its enhanced chemical and abrasion resistance. Keeping the epoxy/polyaspartic en masse refers to keeping it in its mixing bucket. With 100% solids epoxies, like the UV Shield, keeping mixed epoxy in its mixing bucket will extremely accelerate the reaction speed, making the epoxy unusable within a matter of minutes. The opposite is true for the polyaspartics, which will cure much faster when applied to the surface. There aren't really any restrictions on doing multiple coats of epoxy, beyond just the practical limits of applying coat after coat. The trailer will flex slightly, so the less coats of epoxy you have on the trailer the better, to allow for that flexing. If the epoxy gets built up too much, it won't flex but will crack or break.
@DevinGleasonLambert
@DevinGleasonLambert 3 года назад
@@FenixTV4Me how about doing multiple coats of the ElastoShield?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
@@DevinGleasonLambert You could, although you probably won't gain much. A second coat would be fine, but beyond that you'd just be wasting material.
@DevinGleasonLambert
@DevinGleasonLambert 3 года назад
@@FenixTV4Me Thanks, was wondering if the extra ElastoShield might help prevent cracking the epoxy. I have extra so was thinking I might do a second coat. Also, how long can I wait before applying Epoxy? I was thinking the first weekend I would do ElastoShield then 2nd Weekend doing Epoxy? Also same question for between coats from Epoxy to UV Shield, and UV Shield to Polyaspartic? What are the recommended Min/Max timeframes I should wait for between coats of the different products?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
@@DevinGleasonLambert There's no maximum time on waiting before the epoxy goes down. You'll want the Elastoshield to be completely dry, though. I'd usually recommend at least overnight. As for between the coats of epoxy/polyaspartic, if you don't apply the next coat within 24 hours, you'll need to degloss the surface, usually with a floor sander or buffer. Minimum times are just as soon as the product is cured enough to walk on, usually within 8 hours for the epoxy, 2 hours for the polyaspartic.

How long did this take from start rot finish?
@FenixTV4Me
@FenixTV4Me 3 года назад
It was probably 6-7 hours over 4 or 5 days. Most of the time comes from allowing the products to cure. That time could be sped up if you used only polyaspartics. You could do all of your resin coats in one day.
