Glue a washer on the bottom of pump, then glue a magnet on the bottom of the bowl. Then you can take the pump out to clean.

That's a very good idea! The whole foam ball thing didn't last a week, so we took it out and just had the pump in the bowl, the washer idea is a great one!

Sometimes a plain old drinking straw will fit into these fountain parts//spout areas. Also, I keep old cologne bottle caps or water bottle caps to use as legs since they are plastic. Good for many crafting ideas. Going to try my hand at a water fountain/ bird bath this year. I've not done it before so...??? Love all these different ideas! One thing I've learnded is to put some rocks into the water, high enough that birds can have a place to land and feel safe drinking from the fountain. A few twigs around the edge or pushed into the styrofoam ball for hummingbirds little feet to lite on would work well too.

Hummingbirds love the texture of the ball, just make sure to use non toxic paint only!!! The cost on the pumps have really come down. I just bought mine for a little over $12. And I too watch Robbie & Gary here on RU-vid, she's good at recycling too😊

It works I've done it. I use my soldering tool.. it gets hot enough to make the holes bigger without cracking it ... - it releases the pressure.

Not sure about the paint and styrofoam??? - Usually, it is best to use natural elements or hard surfaces without paint when feeding or watering birds - What it looks like is less important than how safe it is for the birds - Time will tell if this is safe.

That was my thought too. She did mention the first paint she used was non-toxic but didn't say this for the gold paint.

@@duckyday1099 - If the birds picked at the styrofoam they may not be able to digest it and they could die -There is a reason store-bought birdfeeders and birdbaths are made in a specific way - As someone who has fed birds my whole life this really irritates me -

Most places sell green floral styrofoam balls which is what I used. Also I don’t know why you inserted your tubing and cut it off? You already have the hole. IF you’re going to do this to your ball leave the tubing out til you’re done

FYI I have sunflower seeds in my feeders so it's usually the tiny shell pieces that get into my pump and stop the motor. I've been using the same pumps for 4 years. Also, some pumps store a charge and therefore run after the sun sets. The higher wattage pumps will only allow a stronger flow. You'll only get the sound of the fountain if the water falls to the basin from a greater distance. There's not a lot of sound from the round spheres. Lastly...if the spray is too high, the wind will blow the water outside the container. That will cause the pump to run dry.

To make a critter person happy can you put some glass marbles along the side so if a bird were to slip down between the ball and bowl so they won’t drown.

That small pump has a filter that may need cleaned periodically. Gluing the pump to the ball and the bowl makes it almost impossible to open the pump. You'll need to remove the filter out and pop off the pump cover to get into the motor. My solar pump motors freeze and cleaning them frees up the debris. Sometimes I need to give that motor fan blade a spin to get them moving again.

Using a balloon with several layers of slick cement would have been a better choice. Gives weight as well as with a texture will give the birds a surface to grasp. River rocks 🪨 and flat stones/rocks would have been also a good alternative choice.

What a neat idea! Looks like the sparrow didn't hesitate long, did he? I wonder if adding tiny little perches to the Styrofoam ball would help encourage the hummingbirds to settle and drink? I used to raise finches, the little feeders had tiny little perches attacked. The feeders were plastic--if you snipped the perch section off the feeder, you could stick the two braces into the foam leaving the perch sticking out of the ball. Not sure if that help, but the plastic feeders are cheap and available at any place that sells pet supplies and food. Again, this is such a cool idea! Thanks Von!

Never use things that are toxic too the birds! Glue, paint , styrofoam, moss, plastic ect! Things need to be human food grade, even the bowl or bucket etc. There are a lot of other ways of making water features without harming the birds. You think you should watch Robbie and Gary Gardening . She teaches safe ways and has made so many that she has learned from her mistakes so you don’t have to! Otherwise, t was very cute

I personally would have used red paint for the ball as Hummingbirds are attracted to red and I would have used natural stones and rocks from nature to place around the ball to prop the ball [instead of gluing down the pump]. It gives it a much more natural look and nature vipe.

I think you could place pvc pipe through center and run tubing through that. Also coating the Styrofoam with concrete would prevent it breaking down in the sun. Just frost it with light coat. Plastic and paint are not healthy for the birds. Very cute, it looks darling, but im just not sure its safe. Birds will pick at all that treated moss and plastic and it could harm them.

I don’t know why these people continuously use hot glue on some things that is going to be left outside hot glue does not hold up if it rains. If it gets wet it is not going to stay together. I have done this over and over and over and it never holds up water / rain and hot glue do not work.

Just add small wood legs I have the exact same fountain and pump you just put in the Styrofoam and it lasted me two years this year’s going to be my third year that’s plenty powerful but I used concrete like Robbie does. I didn’t trust a Styrofoam. I was afraid it would get stuck in the birds beak.
