In celebration of Black Fae Day this year, I made my very own set of wings! I wanted to share my process with you all in hopes that it could help you in your own projects.
I was inspired by the artist Just as Strange as I am - check out their Instagram here: / justasstrangeasiam
If any of these techniques inspire you to create your own work, please tag me as I'd love to see what you create!
EDIT: Thank you all so much for your lovely comments! I've been getting a lot of questions about where I bought my acrylic sheets. You can pick them up at hardware stores or plastic supply stores, but I grabbed mine through Amazon:
www.amazon.com...
(I'm not an Amazon affiliate - this is just a regular link)

A tardy to the party, but a couple questions if these get seen? :) 1) how did you cut the wings out? 2) what type and gauge of wire did you use?
@krissy9570
@krissy9570 5 месяцев назад
I’m obsessed with these wings and I have the same questions as you, so I’m just guessing here. But I’ll share my guesses with you! I saw a pair of scissors in the video so maybe those for cutting? I’ll probably go with an exacto though, or a combo of both! As long as you get the thinner acrylic sheets either of those should work fine! She mentioned a medium gauge wire, so something that will hold its structure, but not so thick you can’t easily work with it. My guess is maybe 12-16ish? Somewhere around there.
@sportzchik95
@sportzchik95 5 месяцев назад
@@krissy9570 thank you! I did try different aluminum wires, and none could hold the weight, even with multiple twisted together. Perhaps steel or brass would work?
@monsterswaltz
@monsterswaltz 5 месяцев назад
@@sportzchik95 Hi! Aluminium wire really bends very quickly and easily, so I would recommend steel wire, the one you can find on hardware stores, instead of crafting stores! it needs to be cut with pliers instead of scizors tho, hope it helps!

There are a few different ways to make wings but I've never seen one like this. The technique allows for so much detail and control in painting and with your skill the depth that you got into the wings was *incredible*. I love the cellophane wing style but most other versions I've seen are inaccessible to people who can't drop hundreds for big tools, thank you so much for sharing this technique.

Hi, these turned SO BEAUTIFUL! i'm a little confused about one of the steps though. You mentioned retracing with sharpie because the film on top faded the lines and then repeating the layers of paint. Are you adding sharpie on top of the iridescent film? If so, are you adding the second layer of repeated paints on the iridescent side or on the flipped over side of the acrylic sheet that hasn't been painted yet? Is the order: acrylic sheet, sharpie outline, paint, iridescent film, retrace sharpie outline, then flip and repeat on the other side? Sorry if my question is confusing! Thank you!
@LSPooo
@LSPooo 3 года назад
I had the same thought!! I've been re-watch that specific part to try to see if she has the iridescent film on both sides! I can't be 100% but I think she does does have it on both sides. I'm gonna try it( same steps you mentioned) on one side and if it looks weird I'll do the other side but I'll probably do it 8 times lol 😆 oh also I could not find the clear sparkly coat from plain fx anywhere!! Not from the website or from Amazon and my 2 local michaels did have plain fx but not the sparkly clear coat.... lol I hope you're wings turn out amazing!!! What color are you thinking? 🧚🏻‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️💖

I have a few questions, when you say acrylic sheets, do you mean plexiglass? and where did you get such big sheets of it? also how much drying time did you have to wait in between each coat of paint and just how long did this project take? So this tutorial was the best one I could find so thank you! For those of you (like me) who read the comments for helpful tips, here’s one about the dimensional magic: a little goes a long way. Hi your video really has me thinking I could put together some of my own wings BUT.. before I do I just have some questions and i know this video was a year ago so if you don't remember or don't know then that's ok! Also my questions might be kinda dumb so go easy on me 😅 1. What size paper did you use? 2. How did you know/decide on what measurements to use to sketch the wings? 3. Is that a silicone brush you used throughout the entire video? I'm guessing because it's easy to clean? 4. Do you think prism film would also work instead of regular iridescent cling film? Also do you think it would be too much to clash with all of the glitter? 5. I notice you traced the wings in red at first and then in brown after the film was applied was that because the red would be too bright? 6. Did you only retrace the wings after the film was applied on one side or both sides? 7. Did any of the glue from the hot glue gun come undone when you were wearing the wings? 8. Lastly so the "u" in the ubar needs to be just long enough to slide under my bra and that'll make it secure? Thank you for making these videos!!! 💜

'Very nice job. You're wings look beautiful.😁 And, it's always cool to meet another Lefty around! A couple of tools that you may find helpful are an "Artist's Bridge", and a "Mahl Stick". In essence, they do the same job, so it's up to you which one works best for you. What they do is help elevate your hand/arm just above your artwork. With a little online searching, you'll find many styles of them. And, even if you think the ones available are a bit out of your budget, you can still easily make them yourself. What did you use to cut out the wings from the rest of the vinyl?

Just some sharp scissors actually! The material is fairly thin. You can use whatever you like though.

I was looking for the answer and she did answer on another comment that she used regular scissors but there are heavy duty ones and if you look up there are tools to cut plexiglass they sell it on home depot and lowes

I was waiting for the cutout moment. How do you cut the wings out?
@cocoasugarcosplay8078
@cocoasugarcosplay8078 7 месяцев назад
I used a sharp pair of scissors, but an x-acto blade would also work! The plastic is pretty thin ☺️👍🏾

What is the name of the heat resistant round pad you’re using I’m looking for it on Amazon but I don’t know what to call it and by the way your video is extremely awesome

It's called a self-healing matt - I've had it for years and I actually use it mostly for cutting. I needed it for school and purchased it from Blick Art. Since making this video I've received a silicone matt that I use for heat resistant purposes now which also works really well! That one was a gift but I'm pretty sure they got it from amazon.

How do you actually wear them?

I tuck them underneath a corset under my outfit. The lacing keeps them in place.☺️👍🏾
