In this moto vlog I show a DIY fix to stop fogging on a Himalayan instrument cluster. I also think I have the solution to prevent condensation on the Royal Enfield Himalayan gauges. I show how to remove the instrument console from the bike. How to clean the condensation from the inside of the instrument panel and how to prevent moisture from getting back into the instrument cluster causing future condensation and fogging by adding a new rubber seal etc. The principals I show in this video can be applied to almost any motorcycle instrument cluster which has fogging or condensation.
On my channel I do all things moto vlog on my 2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan. I do motorcycle tours of Scotland and the UK visiting interesting Historic places and building. These are Scottish History tours. I also do tips and tricks for adventure riders, motorbike gear and equipment reviews, camping and installs and modifications on my Royal Enfield Motorcycle.

My missus is a diving instructor too, so I fully understand the logic of the fix you performed. However, I took a different approach with my 2019 Euro 4 model, that of ventilation. I read somewhere that there are stickers on the back of the instrument cluster covering up holes. Sure enough, I found four plain black round stickers which, when removed, exposed four holes about 6-7mm dia. It worked! No condensation at all since then. Keep the videos coming, very informative.

Good little fix that! The colour change in the silica gel is caused by a small amout of cobalt present. In its normal state the arrangement of ligands is tetrahedral and is blue but as it absorbs water it turns octahedral and pink.

Excellent idea. Very useful information. I live in Australia at the moment and so far have not had this problem, the air is usually quite dry, although it can be very humid at times. Out here i tend to avoid riding in the wet as there is more than enough dry days to go round. So far so good but a great tip for a rainy day. Cheers Lester.

I agree I wouldn't want to drill holes in the instrument housing. I am in the North of England, and I definitely wouldn't do it where you are when you ride in bad weather as much as you do. I tried pausing the video to get a good look at the back of the plug. I was really surprised to be able to see the coloured wires. I was thinking heat shrink or a rubber boot so I think I would add in Nev Wells tip of using self amalgamating tape too.
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt 2 года назад
Agreed Nev is 100% on that one. It's pretty well sheltered behind the screen but aye it seems unfinished almost so am gonny go back sort that out. Drilling holes will allow it to breathe but yes in this climate its just begging for water ingress 👍

Thanks for the solution, works really well. I only found out its very hard to push the buttons on the dash because of the increased height due to the elastic. I 'extended' the plastic sticks which push the buttons and now they are working better than before.

Hollow o-ring cord? That's amazing! My only concern with your fix is that the foam is still there. If leaky foam is the problem, the moisture passage still exists, albeit more restricted by the pressure from the cord. If you don't want to remove the foam, the above suggestion of silicone grease would help. I recommend really working it into the foam to fill passages. Filling up the electrical contact bay with grease before replugging could help eliminate that potential entrance. I really like how you did so many things at once to stop the problem. Wonderful and thorough. If my own cluster fogs, I'll keep your methods in mind. Thank you!

Interesting challenge. I keep a small stock of squishy o ring material for such eventualities and it works a treat. The silica gell bag is always a good idea so it will be interesting to see how this works out for the Enfield. I used to be a diver years ago so can empathise with the comparatives. I used to spit in the mask swill it about then wash it in sea water, always worked well. Not a practical solution for land locked problems 😁.

Hi I found that the small round material stickers on the back of the unit cover over holes, which you can feel if you press hard on the patches. As your making it more watertight it might be better to cover these with Ducktape. Stopping any moisture getting in. Cheers Mark

Hi there, I had the same problem and I took mine apart and put some silica packs in there but mine is an LCD screen but it doesn't have a rubber gasket between the case at all, it does have four holes at the back to breath , do you think it would harm it to seal the case as when it rains I'm sure water is getting in or do the manufacturers not put a seal there for a reason i.e heat getting out , I want to seal it but also don't want to damage it , any advice would be much appreciated 👍🏼

I am waiting for new instruments for my 2021 Himalayan. If it is a hot day, I have moisture in the instrument's for an hour. Later it will disappeare. Harley Davidson has the same problems since many years with the consoles which are sitting on the tank. This is the reason why I had buy a Harley with digital instruments.

My brand new Himalayan instrument cluster is so badly fogged you cants read the lcd display, never been out in the rain. I just assumed the problem lies in a manufacturing fault where the units are assembled in a humid environment sealing the moisture in
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt 2 года назад
That's my thought exactly.. I imagine these units are assembled in India or China or wherever and the eventual condition of your gauges depends on the weather at the time 🤷‍♂️ I think you are right 👍

Hello Bombadil thanks mate. I read your other comments on the subtitles thanks for the feedback. Exciting that you are getting a Himalayan. Strange how in the "Good old days" the analogue clocks on a bike never seemed to fog up... I have only ever experienced issues with condensation on bikes that had digital instrument consoles. How much of a problem this may be for you largely depends on the level of humidity in the atmosphere where the instrument pod was assembled. While it is possible to replace the air in the instrument pod with an inert gas that contains no water this is not the easiest solution. Simply getting a small silica gel pack in there seems to solve the problem for most people. I have only ever noticed fogging of the instruments on my Himalayan when riding on very hot sunny days, which is something of a rarity for me. For the rest of the time the problem has never arisen so I've not bothered to address the issue so far.
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt 2 года назад
That's it Henry.. Funny how things just worked lol.. The fogging issue hasn't been major for me either but its fixed now and hopefully for good. I gave you a shout out in this video because I thought you had put me onto the idea of the fishing pole elastic lol 😂 Thanks again mate.
@ihateemael

my theory is its caused by the heat from the electronics and internal lighting. When its warm inside and cool outside moisture condenses on the glass.
