Yes, I absolutely love fly boxes...especially when they're "DIY!" In this fly fishing video, I share two pathways you can create with your fly boxes, then we take a closeup look at two that I have used in my own setup. Be sure to get your creativity going, and I hope this video helps to improve your fly box system for the water.
I really like this box; can you modify it to hold more flies?? competitiveangler.com/shop/fl...
Thanks for viewing this RU-vid fly tying tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfeather.com
If you have any thoughts or questions based on this video (or DIY fly box suggestions!), please leave them down below in the "Comments" section or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com
Fly fishing for beginners can be difficult at first, thus be sure to stick with it and ask others for advice. If in the need for some helpful tips and other fly tying and fly fishing information, be sure to check out my "Trout and Feather" accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Through my website, you can also sign-up for monthly emails; just scroll down to the bottom of the home page. Thanks!

Hard case credit card holders. Pull out insert. foam on one side, magnet on the other. These are my favorite fly boxes!

Hey Tim As always, thanks for the video. As I watched this, I thought, if you drop that Altoids box it's going to sink. actually they float quite well. Obviously water tight. Once I started adding weight, like magnets the floatation was of course compromised, so I added a piece of craft foam to the top and bottom (outside). Doesn't make the box much bigger and aids in floatation. This only works if the box is closed. Once filled with water, the box sinks like a rock......Just thought I'd throw that out there for everyone to experiment with. Have fun.

Very smart thinking, Jeff; thanks for the ideas! I wasn't thinking about that, but it's something more to consider. I also will put my name and phone # inside the boxes...if they float off! Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and I hope all is well. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I, too, started using mint boxes decades ago. I like their compactness. An alternative to using 3 chunky magnets is to glue a thin “sheet magnet” (not sure what they’re called) to a box. A lot of trades people have their business cards printed on them. When you don’t need one anymore, glue it to the lid of an Altoids tin. Works well for nymphs. Cheap, too!

You cease to amaze me. When you showed the Altoid boxes in the video it brought back memories. My Dad use to use these for putting live bait such as moggots, meal or wax worms for any kind of fishing. He was one of the old timers that always used live bait even on his flys. LOL. The ideas you have given me on this video are so valuable Tim. Hats off to you Buddy. And thanks so much. I'm indebted to you. Since we spoke last time. I had a Pacemaker installed. I'm doing great. But I feel like the Bionic Man. LOL. Hope all is well with you and family. Thanks again for such a great video.👌👌👌👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

*Sunday - Saturday vitamin boxes.* Available in the pharmacy section with the days of the week on them are also great. You can find them at your local pharmacy, Walmart, the dollar store, etc. Also, in the craft section of stores (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Walmart) where they sell *small craft bead containers* for those that do bead work and costume jewelry with beads, the have similar containers in square, rectangle, and round styles. I've used them for years. *Rx (amber translucent plastic pill bottles)* are great too. If you had a nasty flu bug and had to get an Rx or something, those screw-top pill bottles are great for various fishing gear and won't pop open on you or in your pack. *Tupperware* ... Yes. I found some small Tupperware containers at a garage sale a while back. Not sure what they were designed for (kitchen or office), but looks like individual ice cube trays or for paper clips, push pins & wall tacks ... with a lid. Just hacksaw to desired size & lightly sand or file the edges, then cut the lid accordingly & do the same. Plano StowAway model: 3400 SKU #344922, or model: 3448.

This is great Tim. My wife works for a dentist and he does crowns...they come in a small plastic box sandwiched between two pieces of foam. I have her bring them home...I have MANY. (100s)Ask your dentist or the hygienist to set them aside for you. They are not reusable for the dentist so they usually throw em away.

Hi Tim. I like this video and your ideas of DIY boxes, I've been making my own fly boxes for storage since I began tying flies 4 years ago. I also make my own Pike fly boxes. But being a woman I like to carry many flies so my boxes are big (kinda like the big purse syndrome!) I will send you some pics of them. Thanks for your always informative videos! :) Ann

Nice video, Tim. Plano boxes are a good option. We are lucky to have a Cabelas and a Bass Pro Shop nearby and sometimes they discontinue old boxes so I scoop a bunch up for my deer hair poppers and tying supplies. Here's a great organizational idea.... Those Plano boxes also work great to store hooks. Glue a bit of craft foam on the inside cover of the box to make a secure seal and be sure to use a sharpie to mark the hook size on the foam and you're good to go. The craft foam insures the hooks don't mix with each other when you accidentally turn the box over. Do NOT waste your money on plastic boxes with the adjustable sides. Get the moulded ones! The adjustable ones don't stay secure.

Thanks, Tim. Your videos are great, and I've benefited from MANY of them. I noticed a comment on VHS boxes (for streamers, I believe?). It reminded me of something I have done that is useful. They used to make small cabinets with pull out drawers in which you could store your VHS tapes. I simply found some small rectangular cardboard boxes and cut them down to fit in there. It makes a wonderful cabinet for various fly-tying stuff. If I could, I would share a picture. (That would also force me to re-organize it, I suppose!) BTW, I also noticed the commend about Oil Creek, PA. I grew up in northwestern PA, Port Allegany, and have many fond memories of fishing with my dad on those small streams. Regards, Tom Hines

Thanks for the comments, Tom, and love the VHS idea! I used to carry some VHS containers with larger patterns for stripers and pike, so maybe I should find those boxes, ha ha. Oil Creek is an area I loved to fish through my teens and early 20's. Do you still fish there much? Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, I do this with bigger boxes that can be bought at craft stores. The next box will be a Plano pistol case that sells for around $9.00. I use foam that I bought from the FedEx store, it is used to protect laptops and other electronics. These boxes are great for use in kayaks and canoes, for bass, muskie, and pike. It is a lot cheaper than the big fly boxes that some fly shops sell. Another shirt pocket sized tin are tins that are sold for gift cards. The one that I have even has a bass on it.
@TimCammisa

Thanks for the ideas, and I'll have to look for that foam. Speaking of those gift card tins, I know that I have a couple and will have to take a closer peek at them; thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

The Altoids tin idea is great for seasonal flies even when you have a few other bigger boxes for general patterns. Have a tin for each short-lived hatch, and just add them to your daily kit through out the season. That way you don’t need to keep carrying stuff like Green Drakes, Quill Gordons, and Hendricksons all season, and you don’t have to rearrange your general fly assortment boxes over the course of a season.

Thanks for the comments, Timothy, and having a box for each hatch is a smart suggestion! I appreciate you taking the time to share. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I had a serious Altoid habit when I first started fly fishing. If you can find the Ginger or licorice flavors, they have a good kick. I haven't seen them for years though. Magnets are great, especially for the midges.

The mint box rusted easily. Put my younger sisters flys when we went out I open it every thing was rusted I got one to get clean and she caught her fish fish on a fly she tied. She made more. I just put it in a normal box.

I wonder if the box got wet, Caleb? I've yet to have anything rust in mine, and I carry them every fishing outing. After fly fishing, be sure to dry the fly first before putting it back in the container, as the added moisture will definitely cause rust. Sorry to hear that, but very cool she caught the fish on her own fly!! Thanks for taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
