About to do this on my 04' Highlander, was grateful to find the wire harness already in place, and the switch right next to the one for the headlights. Thanks for the video!!!

Thank you so much for this video I'm going to do this I just got a 2003 Highlander and I put aftermarket fog lights and other lights on all of my cars is where I drive there's always construction and sometimes they drop stuff in the middle of the road you have to avoid and I need to see that and sometimes the edge of the road at their concrete barriers are covering the line and so then all of a sudden you have a barrier in the way and I really need to see that as well so I'm going to add these fog lights as soon as I can thank you so much

Thank you so much for this DIY video. Do I need to disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing the activation/installation?
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 3 года назад
I used a multi meter to test circuit, so I kept negative hooked up. I also tested relay in the video, only way to fo that was to keep battery connected.

I'm more interested in where the stock relay for the fog lamps is on my 04 highlander are, I'm trying to find a way to get them to work independently, but I don't think this car actually has one.

So if you add the fog lights and plug them in to the empty harnesses they won’t come on when you turn on the low beams? You still have to add the relay?
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 2 года назад
That is correct, and you have to ground the violet wire to activate the relay when the lights are activated. That is why I use a switch. Some people go out and buy the OE combo turn signal lever with fog light switch so they don't have to ground the violet wire.
@FDietzNutz
@FDietzNutz Год назад
I'm not a sparky so I have no idea how to do any of the middle work between finding the junction and having the light switch wired. I tried putting my multimeter into the junction and then grounding it and nothing happened. Then I saw you wired it to a switch Do you just run a separate wire from the violet wire junction to your switch? And then connect a ground wire to the switch as well?
@justbehandy
@justbehandy Год назад
Thank you, that is what I did. The switch just takes the wire to ground and that activates the relay. Make sure the relay is installed. Hope that helps.

@justbehandy
@justbehandy Месяц назад
Sorry I don't. I didn't put power to my switch as that could cause issues, I just have it going to ground and it doesn't light up.
@MCRinOC

Thanks for the helpful video. I am considering adding fog lights to my 06 Highlander. I have a question. There are lighted switches that fit in the blanks on the Highlander - where you placed your toggle switch. The lighted switches on Amazon include a four wire harness. From my understanding: one wire brings in current from the relay, the second wire takes the switched current to an accessory you would be powering (in this case it would not be needed), the third wire is the current source for the for the bulb in the switch itself and can be wired to the ACC power source to light up like other dash lights, the 4th wire goes to ground. My question is, could I use that type of switch in this scenario in place of a 2 wire toggle switch? I would use the first wire connected to the violet wire you mention. The second wire (switched power) I would cap. Third and fourth wires I would splice together and connect to ground so that the light on switch illuminates when switch is powered on. Sorry if this is too much or outa left field. Give it a moment of your time and let me know if you think I am on to something. Maybe you might upgrade to a lighted switch that fits in that empty slot as well. Thanks
@MCRinOC
@MCRinOC 10 месяцев назад
I guess I’m all confused. A relay coil itself draws minimal amps when energized. Doesn’t seem like I could use the ground leg of the relay to power an “ON” light inside a dash switch when the relay is activated.
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 10 месяцев назад
You are correct, I didn't get a good result trying to get the light to illuminate, and spent too much time trying to get it to work, so I ended up using it as a 2 position switch. Just getting the violet wire to ground and tripping the relay. Hope that helps.
@MCRinOC
@MCRinOC 10 месяцев назад
I see. Thanks. So, having a switch that has a light in it won’t cause any damage to the relay if just switching the ground…it just doesn’t light up?
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 10 месяцев назад
@MCRinOC correct! If you really have to have a light switch, you will need another relay that would isolate the violet wire to ground only, while allowing the light to illuminate. Hope that helps.
@thelostsouls11

Unsure how to ground the violet wire anyt tips?
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 18 дней назад
I found a bolt that was in close proximity and had good chassis ground, then made a short harness that used a loop crimp at the bolt to the switch. As for the violet wire, I used a crimp that T-ed off of the wire to the other side of the switch. Hope that helps.

About to run this now. I went a slightly different way and switched out the turn signal/headlight arm for Toyota’s arm that has the fog light switch. Do I still need to ground the violet wire somehow? I’m getting the relay click when I activate the fog lights but the bulb doesn’t come on.
@justbehandy
@justbehandy 2 года назад
That is Awesome Ryan! I don't think you need to ground the violet wire as the new wire harness connector will ground the violet wire when you switch to fog light setting. Hope that helps.

How exactly did you wire that switch up, like the power wire from the switch to the violet wire, and the ground wire from the switch to a ground point?

@@123HUsoldier you could just use a simple toggle switch that just takes the violet wire to ground. Did not bother with getting my switch to illuminate.

Well I do have a switch, n I hooked the ground up to it, but I dosnt actually turn it off or on, the fog light just stays on, as soon as I turn my car it's on, and the only way to trun it off right now, it's to turn off all the lights with main light switch on steering
@123HUsoldier

Like the switch I have has four wires, a ground, a power for illumination. (Witch I'd like to be able use) and two other wires idk about. I can only assume there for being able to actually turn off and on the fog lights when you want

@justbehandy
@justbehandy 21 день назад
I didn't wire it to light up, just switch to ground. If you want the switch to light up, you would need a relay to separate the circuit so you don't short the ground wire. Hope that helps

Used a Solderless Quick Splice Snap Wire Connector, that allows the violet wire to continue without being cut, and the wire from the switch run to the other side of the connector. Hope that helps

Shocker. So I bought the turn signal stock with the fog switch, I checked the switch with the multimeter, the turn signal harness has wires for the fog pins... But, the known good relay doesn't click when I switch on fogs on the stock. The fuse is good too... Sadly I hadn't found your video when I was preparing for my installation. Installed the lights with the prewired harness, checked the fuse, installed the relay by moving over the tail light relay, installed the new turn signal stock with the swith... Nothing. Doesn't work. I hope the ECU isn't controlling it. Will check that wire coming into the fuse box, grounding it should make the relay actuate in theory...
