I bought it through amazon, and the delivery takes 90 days. pathetic. Thanks for the video! the best so far.

Thanks. 90 Days! Wow, that is a long time. Now that I think about it, a few places have been telling me that their carbon fiber stuff is very delayed, so I think it's an issue for many.

not enough vids of the gap issues and how to fix it lol i had to do the same thing with my pricey spoiler from a reputable company.

With that VNH, its best to install how you did, but one change. As you pull back the red tape, dont pull it all the way off, as you pull it off in sections, hold down that section for like 30+ seconds for the initial adhesion. That is important. Thats why it kept popping in certain sections. Have installed the same one on several cars.
@mmark300
@mmark300 Год назад
Thanks for the advice. After thinking about it more, it seems like it would be better to cut the red backing in the center of the wing, then start pulling some off in both directions, little by little and then applying pressure like you say. I didn't like starting on one side as it seems easy to get a bit off track as you go and then it just gets worse as you get to the other side. Have you noticed gaps on all cars? The same brand spoiler?

@@mmark300 I installed the same one twice.... once actually from the middle, but it was easier to go from one side.

the gaps are cause by the thickness of the TAPE. You did everything PERFECTLY. Extremely attached to details. So no matter what you do there is always gonna be gaps. it is because the tape, if you stretch it even a little it will be thinner in some parts than others.. Great video. thank you

Thanks! I just put another one (nice one from halo blk) on a friend's car and I was thinking the same - gaps are from the tape... Stay tuned if you want to see that video

I just did this with Permatex 81158 for a small lifted area on my spoiler of my Supra. It looks super good. I removed the tape probably around 15 minutes, and it was still in its liquid phase as in this video. And boy was it messy. At that point, I wanted to have a cleaner line and I wanted the finish line to sit more underneath the spoiler, but anything I did at this point was smearing it like shown in the video. I think it's better to sit and wait until it reaches the rubber phase for cleanup. It's pretty spot on about the timing at the 45 minute to 1 hour mark when it gets to be more rubbery in consistency. That's when I did the best cleanup. I used a small cup of water and dipped a glove-wrapped plastic trim remover (best not to use metal because it'll scratch your paint) and started pushing the edges of the silicone to a straight line. This will leave small smear marks, but it's way easier to clean up at the rubber phase, which I use alcohol pads to help wipe, and still at this point it wipes smeared silicone very easily.

I am having the same issue after installing an oem performance spoiler on my LRMY 😅 This must be a common occurrence for us diy’ers 😩 As you mentioned though, all the other spoiler install videos don’t mention this “gap” issue after their install. Thanks for shedding light on this! I will need to do silicone as well. Just not sure if I am going to go clear..or black.

@@mmark300 great points, black it is! Btw what is the function of the weeping holes in the spoiler. Forgot whether I covered them when I applied the 3M tape. The spoiler is already on the car. 😫
@mmark300

@@stiben718 I'm really not positive what the exact purpose of weeping holes are in carbon fiber are, but I know they are needed in other areas, like construction, to allow water to weep out of things like concrete. About to try this for my rear diffuser. Wouldn’t clear silicone be easier considering it would be more “hidden”. Seems like it’ll be a cleaner job when trying to get all the extra off your car
@mmark300
@mmark300 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, maybe, but clear doesn't hide the gap as well. And if you leave any on the car it won't look good later anyway as I think it may start looking dirty.

I too have installed my spoiler this way (3 bloody times now), I have replaced the 3m tape every time and everytime the car sits out in the sun the middle lifts up (gaps on the top of the trunk), I think we are putting these on in the incorrect place with regard to how far (the distance) from the top edge of the trunk to the edge of the spoiler is, I think I will measure where the spoiler is now and increase the distance (if you can imagine rolling the spoiler down the trunk lid more) that way I think I will gain my surface area on the top tape piece, if you look at Model y teslas with these spoilers they appear to almost follow or become an extension of the trunk line when you look at them from side on. I agree with your silicone soulition as well
@mmark300
@mmark300 10 месяцев назад
Wow, 3 times! I haven't put one on the model y yet, but I'm thinking if it's popping up on the top edge, you may be pushing it down too far on the install. So pushing it towards the bumper. Maybe?? In the next month I'll be putting one on a model Y, so I'll find out...

If this may help i can give my contribution to this video. I had this issue as well. They provided another set of glue or whatever you call it. First time i installed it it fell off on the right side. Second time, i removed the glue and put the glue myself, ON THE EDGE and all the way to the corner edges' as well. Guess what ? It matches perfectly. I guess you have to put extra time to make it perfect. Hope this helps ;)

@@mmark300 : Watching you apply the black sealant reminds me of watching Akira Nakai working on doing his wide fenders on Porsches. I'm in the process of shooting clear for a raw finish carbon fiber wing for a Tesla M3. Fitment is spot on, but I know even with the thin 3M tape I just purchased, it's gonna cause some gapping issues. I'm most likely will do the black sealant as well on my new blue M3.
@mmark300
@mmark300 Год назад
@rogerserafin Well I'll take that as a compliment! Don't use tape that is too thin as it needs to soak up the small imperfections. And then the amount of gap will also depend on how close you put the tape to the edge of the wing. But yeah, I don't see how to put it on without gap.

Great idea for sealing the gaps in the spoiler. I'm a bit concerned about using silicone sealant on the car surface though. Hopefully no issues if you ever have to remove it or water getting trapped in there. Things like that.
@mmark300
@mmark300 Год назад
Thanks and silicone will not harm the paint surface. More water and dirt will get trapped in there if the gaps are not sealed. Also, if the tape and install were perfect, the tape would seal it all up anyway...

Good Install. I just ordered my spoiler. After watching like 15 videos of installations, I think the trick is only peel the top tape first, then apply heavy downward pressure. Once that's done, peel the bottom tape then apply lateral pressure. What do you think?
@mmark300
@mmark300 Год назад
Thanks. I'm not sure if you put the top tape down that you'll be able to pull the red backing off of the bottom tape. Not positive about that though... Read the Alex Moreno comment and my reply below for more ideas. Then, in another video of mine (mirror caps, I think), someone said that you can use an alcohol and water solution to keep the tape mobile (not sticking too hard) until you get it in place. Once it dries the tape will supposedly stick just as hard. I've never seen nor heard of this before but I want to try it out on something...
