Details on how to replace a faulty thermostat in a GE model ice maker.
If your ice maker fails to make ice properly or fails to release ice from the mold, this video provides instructions on how to take it apart and replace the internal thermostat and verify some of its internal parts.
Failure to make/release the ice could also imply other issues with your freezer as the internal thermostat in the freezer must reach a cold enough temperature (min of -8C) to close its internal contacts and allow power to flow through the mold heater, to release the ice.

Fantastic video...I purchased an entire used ice-maker for $23 on eBay (with free shipping) - was told it worked. Nope. Same issue - thermostat was not hitting the heater long enough and releasing the ice. I installed a rocker switch (similar to your push button switch) and now I just listen for the motor cycling, then hit the switch, wait a minute or two for the ice to release and turn it off. I will have to get to the thermostat replacement sometime later. This seems to be a common (to me) failure with two units exhibiting the same problem. It looks like the thermostat and the HOLD switch work together to cycle the motor off of HOLD, with the water valve actuating with power passed through the heater element. I created a logic chart for the process and the problem with the thermostat. It would seem that the thermostat timing is critical, in that it needs to operate exactly at temperature and delay LONG enough to free the ice. Too long and the heater stays on and the motor would go through another cycle (and you'd get a second dose of water), too short and you get the problem I'm having and the one you've demonstrated in the video.
