DIY Garage Door Insulation with Reflectix

With summer starting and the temperature rising by the day, I decided the garage doors really needed some insulation. I chose to use Reflectix insulation. They only provide an R-3 insulation value when used on garage doors, which is pretty low when compared to a fiberglass insulation kit which can provide a R-8 value. There are a few other options to choose from, but I settled on using Reflectix insulation as a radiant barrier to help prevent heat transfer. I realized that a higher insulating value was pointless considering the garage is not temperature controlled and I cannot stop the humidity.

I just completed this exact project. And I used the same products. Except that I employed the double-sided tape option securing the Reflectix to the door panels. I ended up with the same temperature improvement with an even more noticeable difference in temperature with the bedroom over the garage. This project was worth the effort.

Did a similar thing with my garage door recently. Same product, different manufacturer. I don't think anybody is expecting miracles with this stuff, but it definitely insulates and helps to stabilize the temperature inside the garage.

I have noticed a difference, definitely a more stable and predictable temperature in the garage day to day.

I placed the product in one continuous length across the width of the door and mounted it to the top of the metal supports to create an air pocket between the door surface and the insulation. For my installation I chose to use 3M high bond double sided foam tape and I also placed the product under the hinges for added security. Self tapping screws were also added.

How did it work for you leaving the air gap?

lol i just did spray adhesive instead of the tape, saved a lot of time for the same result (at least short term)

Just found your channel on this video, I love it. To anyone saying you did it wrong, you didn't. Something tells me your service has a similar saying as mine. There's the right way, the wrong way, and the army way. You did this job your way and got the results you were looking for... hopefully. Just subscribed, keep up the good work!

You did it all wrong. You taped the bubble wrap against the metal. You're supposed to leave an air gap of at least 1 inch if you can and I think 2 inches is recommended. Plus you taped the bubble wrap to the door. If you ever want to move it for whatever reason, you're screwed. Pulling off the tape = ruining the foil on your bubble wrap. You'd have been better off taping magnets to the backside of the bubble wrap and then you could pull the bubble wrap off any time you want.

What is the temp inside the garage now?

I have noticed on average a decrease of 5 degrees of heat coming off the doors since I installed the insulation. The garage does not drop below whatever the overnight low temperature is. If I keep the doors down all day I usually can count on the garage being between 5 to 10 degrees lower than the outside temperature. The garage is not perfectly sealed, I could do a bit of work around the doors to improve it. Plus I do not have a climate controlled garage so its still going to get hot/cold based off the weather.

Probably should have read the instructions first because you installed it wrong. That is not insulation. It’s radiant shielding. It requires an air gap to be effective. You have to run it in a continuous sheet across the raised edges- not fill in squares flat against the door.

I show at the end of the video that it produced a 4-8 degree temperature difference off the door. Perhaps it could have been more effective but it still has an air gap, only the edges are taped down. As for calling it insulation the company quite literally calls it insulation. Radiant shielding is a type of insulation. Insulation is simply anything that prevents or limits the transfer of electricity, heat or sound.

You're correct he did it wrong. He should add an edit admitting it
