This video shows how I mounted a Garmin Varia Rear Radar tail light to my seat bag using the spare quarter-turn mounts and zip-ties. If you found this useful, give it a "thumbs up" as it does help inspire me to make other bike-related hacks.
Thanks for watching!

I just did this for both of my Scion seat bags, as they are particularly problematic because they hang lower than those with velcro straps and cover more of the seatpost. It is super-easy to do and I opted to buy a five dollar eyelet tool for little grommets to pass the zip ties through. This is more than a hack...it could actually save lives. Imagine yourself near the bottom of a steep descent and a truck approaching you from further up the hill. The effectiveness of the light is compromised due to the visibility angle. With this brilliant fix, a rider can now take full advantage of maximum visibility for the Varia with it hanging straight off the back. Thank you Ted deGuzman!

Jeff, glad it was helpful! Great idea using the eyelet tool, too! Ride safe!

I just used my light strap on my bag, a Garmin Mount and a black Garmin rubber band looped under the strap. Velcro on the opposite end to hold the radar/light firmly in place. Saw it on another RU-vid video.

Good video. I used your approach to burn holes through the bag, but I unscrewed the 1/4 turn mount from the seat-post adapter that came with the Varia. I then used a flat piece of plastic on the inside of the bag and ran the original hex screws through the plastic and into the mount on the exterior surface. Super solid, very stable.

Thanks for the idea, the original bolts were too short for me so I had to pick up some longer Metric M3 bolts to get everything to work...........

I have faced the same problem and came up same solution as yours. I first thought about using zip ties. Instead, I sewed my mount with heavy duty thread for leather.

Hello from Spain. I was doing the same brico when I noticed that the original holder has two screws so I have use this two holes with larger screws and added washers for more secure. It is very stable and only two littles holes are requeried in the bag. Thanks a lot for your video

@@teddeguzman5298 I had two spares Garmin mounts so fitted one on to each bag. I’ve also used an elastic ring that fits tightly around the Varia to attach a security lanyard to. The soldering iron tip was something I wouldn’t have thought of.

I have just fastened my radar with rubber rings on the strap of the saddle bag. It was much easier to do, but your solution is much more elegant 👍
@teddeguzman5298
@teddeguzman5298 2 года назад
I tried that, too; but it bounced around too much I was concerned the rubber rings might pop off and I'd lose my radar. If you haven't already done so, take a plastic zip tie, and wrap it around the body of the radar. Before you lock it up, tie a wrist lanyard to the zip and attach the lanyard to your saddle bag. In the event your rings do pop off, at least you won't lose your radar since it'll be secured to your saddle bag. Thanks for watching and your comment!

I might try this mod. I think it is more practical to have the zip tie heads on the outside - no wasted space inside the bag and no need for the foam pad to protect the contents. No one will see the heads when the Varia is mounted.
@teddeguzman5298
@teddeguzman5298 3 года назад
True. I did try this out initially but decided against it since I preferred the cleaner look: also, I wanted to apply hot glue on the heads for extra security. Some of the commenters suggested using a needle and heavy thread. You might consider that, too! Thanks for the comment and watching!

If you add one more hole you can feed a usb charge cable through and a compact charge battery pack inside the bag, Handy if you go on very long rides and need a recharge.

Good job, but does the bag moving when your riding affect how it detects cars
@teddeguzman5298
@teddeguzman5298 3 года назад
No, it does not affect the radar use. Even though there's a slight jiggle on my bag, as long as the radar is facing rearward, its use is not affected. Thanks for watching!

It results in backward conversation from those in the cars coming up behind you. That shouldn't affect you much though.

I was reading in the Garmin handbook and it says to keep 2 inches away from body because of radiation! Yours is very close to your butt when installed upside down.

@robertthompson240 3 года назад
Interesting hack but not ideal considering that you have to stick a piece of foam to redirect the radar. Thanks anyway.
@teddeguzman5298
@teddeguzman5298 3 года назад
It all depends on your saddlebag. That's not the case for my main saddlebag you see on my Eddy Merckx bike: there's no foam on that bag. However; on my smaller saddlebag, yes, I did have to use a piece of foam so the radar was facing traffic and not the sky. That bag had a different mounting system that caused the bag to tilt upward. A minor inconvenience but well worth the extra step so the radar has proper detection range. Thanks for watching!
@DEAR7340
@DEAR7340 3 года назад
There are other creative options, based upon this approach though. For example, consider modifying one of those "piggyback" brackets that triathletes mount on the back of saddle rails - - usually for additional water bottles.
