Our DIY pergola hammock has been a long awaited project. We’ve been planning this for a while now and finally figured out exactly how we wanted to do it. Basically I’m saying we have an excuse for naps now, FINALLY. We hope this inspires you all to make one of your own!
We spent about $250 on this. That’s only 12 Yankee candles or 50 Starbucks coffees. Wow, isn’t that amazing haha.
Seriously though, thank you for swinging by and we hope to see you around in that next video!
List of materials:
2 - 6x6x10
2 - 2x8x16
4 - 2x6x10
4 - 1/2" x 10" galvanized bolts
2 - 1/2" x 8" eye bolts
6 - 1/2" washers and nuts
1 box - 4" drive screws
9 - 50lb bags fast setting quikrete
1 gallon - exterior sealant/stain

I love this idea and have a vacant corner next to the deck. I also have 3 kids and I know I should have at least two hammocks to save my sanity! How would you change this to a corner pergola, using two hammocks, one in each direction? Have you thought of doing this for yourselves? Awesome tunes, love the tropical house vibes...always need more of that with pina coladas!
@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 3 года назад
Hi Shawn! Thank you so much! That sounds like a perfect idea! The posts would essentially be the same, just each hammock sharing the rear corner post. The support beams would have to be attached differently to the rear corner post, but they have lots of specialty pergola brackets at most hardware stores that you could look at. For the top though you could either extend the rafters to make the structure a triangle (with the front rafters longer and progressively getting shorter) or you could just mirror the two and give each arm of the hammock pergola their own rafters. I hope this makes sense, let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi Thomas! There is always a risk of wood rotting over time. We treated the boards to resist rot and had a 4" gravel bed at the base of the posts to help with drainage. The top of the concrete slopes away from the posts to assist with the drainage as well. We also live in California where rain is minimal so we are hopeful the posts will last a long time 😊

Great video! How did you ensure that the two posts were at the same elevation on top? (level with each other)
@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 4 года назад
Hi Andrew! We did our best to make the holes the same depth. Once the concrete was set we placed a level on the 2x8x16 support beam and checked the level between two posts. (We got lucky that ours turned out to be level). But once you check level you would mark which beam is taller and use a saw to cut that once down to make it level with the shorter one. We hope that makes sense, please let us know if that answers your question. We can email you a picture if you want. 👍

@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 3 года назад
Hi Chris, it's been over a year and the posts are holding up great! We wouldn't recommend using the foam just because it's not recommended for any type of structural posts, and the weight of a person in the hammock would cause some significant strain on the foam. ***ACTUALLY THINK IT’S 30” pieces. 1st thanks a million for the video! Just finishing mine. Couldn’t have done it without you. I was going to cut at 32 as you mentioned, but that would leave a 24 inch scrap piece and you wouldn’t be able to get 15 rafters out of 4 2x6s. I think you meant 30” cuts which would give you 5 rafters with each 10 foot board.

How much did this project cost? Including the lumber, quickcrete, and bolts? (Cost to build excluding power tools used) Thanks!
@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 4 года назад
Everything in total was about $250 (technically $257.49). And yes! It could definitely be made with 4x4s. The 6x6s were the highest cost items, but we splurged on them. If you use 4x4s you could downsize the support beams to 1x6s (we used 1x8s) and then make the rafters 1x4s (instead of 1x6s). Just so it's not too top heavy. Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

Haha yes you're right! The directions on the bag say to mix it in the post hole, but we learned the hard way that that's the worst way to do it! 😂 We mix it in a bucket now, MUCH easier.

Nice but really wish you had given us dimensions etc. I’m trying to figure out how deep to dig and how far apart the posts need to be.
@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 4 года назад
We don't usually give dimensions because everyone's project is different, but the post hole should be 1/4 to 1/3 of the height of the post, deep (ex: a post that has 8ft above ground would need 2ft-2.6ft underground). And the post distance would depend on the size of hammock you are hanging. Ours was 14ft because we have a 12ft hammock . Hope this helps!

Hi just thought 2 plank plus post would equal to 10”.
@BrocAndAimee
@BrocAndAimee 4 года назад
Oh yeah that is definitely confusing! Sorry, with lumber, a 6x6 is actually 5.5x5.5 and a 2x8 is actually 1.5x7.5, so the total thickness of all the pieces together is only 8.5"
