That is amazing...WELL DONE kids! I love how you just dig in and figure it out. Nice to have all the sheet metal tools...and I'm not buying that you're a total nube 😉 Tip: The solder will flow towards heat. Rather than heat the gap, heat the edge away from where you are soldering. This really promotes the capillary action and fills the seam. Also, slow down a little and add a little more heat (get the copper hotter) before you touch the solder to the piece. That will make that solder flow better and a neater seam. Finally copper is a great heat conductor so it may take a while to get the seam hot enough. I'll bet you noticed that. A++

Thanks so much @TR Bowlin 😃We ARE pretty new to sheet metal! However, we had just watched several videos on RU-vid University on different ways to make water tight joints and Googling joint design , so that helped with our plans! Those are EXCELLENT tips on soldering! What you saw there was our "practice" (yeah... we just jumped in to do it rather than practice on a separate piece... didn't want the waste! LOL) Love how you said to slow down and heat up the metal more first. Will do that next time we braze a seam! Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! It's definitely going to help up our sheet metal game! - Brian + Erin

I love copper sink day it's the only day of the week I look forward to. Use the copper scrap pieces in your naughty pantry door for some accents. Just a thought and the sink turned out beautiful well done, well done if you build them for other people try a neumatic gun that you can get different tips for to give it your hammered look without having to hit it a million times your poor wrists. Lol Great job you to.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
Baahahhahah @Brian Davis! Well, if you like this sink, Erin has another that she's going to make for the bathroom (a pounded vessel sink)! We definitely picked up all our scrap copper because you'll see them become parts of other projects as we go along 😉 And that is a splendid idea to include some copper on that naughty pantry door! That pantry threw us a curveball because it wasn't part of our original plan and measurements AND we moved the fridge location, so we have a creative FIX that we need to design so that it has full range of motion for pulling out. Great idea about getting a pneumatic hammer! We're definitely going to be mounting an air compressor on the rig so that we can fill up our tires OR we'll look into using the air tanks that are already on board for the air brakes and have a fitting we can plug into for topping off tire air pressure (that's one of the ways we did it on the fire truck in a pinch). However, installing a dedicated air compressor will reduce the wear on the air brake system and we'll be able to get higher pressures than 100ish psi which our tanks are regulated at. There's something therapeutic about swinging the ball-peen hammer onto the sheet copper. What's cool is we could get Popeye forearms with a gorilla grip! Thanks for watching and commenting! We appreciate it! - Brian + Erin

Holy crap!! Not that the rest of your projects haven't been cool, but this one is the coolest of the cool ones!! Tinning is one thing I've never done, so watching this process was fascinating. Because I have zero experience, I have to say, I wasn't seeing it, but once you got far enough along, then it clicked for me. Having Dad's shop available def made that whole thing a lot less work, for sure. Hand banging out all those bends would've been forever, and not nearly as neat and clean. Soldering def takes some practice to do a nice clean joint, and ain't as easy as it looks. If I knew what I was doing with my kitchen reno , you'd have an order, but that's still a few steps away at this point. Now if you could just jump ahead to the install vid so we can see what it's going to look like, that would be preferable. I do have to say, all that firefighter talk got a little distracting. Like peeps are actually gonna do all that. Come on now, get with the program. If that actually happened, what's the point of having firefighters? They'd never have anything to do. There are far worse things than having to call 911 once in a while. ;)
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
You just made both Erin and I burst out laughing (multiple times as we read this @2AZSUN)!! What's cool about this sink is we were dragging our feet on buying a sink because we REALLY wanted a copper one, but this rectangular style goes for around $1,500 USD. Although our sink is not "pristine" like the ones that come from the factory, we feel that the art of it embodies more of who we are AND we made it together. There's a ton of pride in this build where we look at what we've done, then look at each other with big smiles saying, "We did that..." The install video will happen in due time... We want to play with patinas and test out some ideas on the small drop pieces of copper we have leftover from this creation. Also, we are going to make a natural DIY polish/sealer (which we haven't shown yet, but just received all we need to make it). We do plan on making our crafty crafts for people who want one for themselves (we will have an Etsy shop at some point😃) As for the public service announcements for fire safety... We want everyone to be safe when building!!!! So, although safety is not the most exciting stuff to promote, it's essential to survival! LOL! We know you like FFs! Thanks for watching!! Just a suggestion, sprayfoam the outside with a ridged foam insulation, (especially if you have some when you do your insulation in the bus, if you do spray foam) will add some rigidness to it and make it not so loud when you put dishes or run water into it.

Hey hey Pamela! What's funny about your recommendation is that we found our live edge shelves on our curved skylights from FB marketplace! We're going to get the same type of wood for our counter tops. As for the copper sink, the 22 gauge copper sheeting was $10 CAD/square foot. With drops, we ended up spending approximately $120 CAD on materials and it took both of us 8 hours working together to make this sink :) We've already had people message us asking us to build them a sink, so we may do that in the future. OMG! This was such a fun project to work on! What's funny about you talking about cutting and bending, we were thinking of doing it that way, but the sheet of metal we bought kind of dictated the way we were going to cut it (because we bought dropped sheets for cheap!) So that's the story on why we did it this way. However, we definitely like the idea of cutting out the corners then just breaking and brazing up the seams. Maybe we'll be able to do that on another project in the future! Thanks for watching! - Brian + Erin

I have a copper washtub im turning into a sink for our Mud Room/ Laundry room and i was really hoping you would show how you recessed the area for where the actual drain went in. Is there a video where you showed doing that or what exactly did you do ?
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 3 года назад
That's a great questions @Luke Simpson! We have not recessed the drain flange area YET!! However, we have an idea of how we're going to do that... Here's what we're probably going to do: We're going to get a 2x6 and draw a circle for how large the outer diameter of the flange needs to be (we haven't bought our drain yet, so we're not sure the exact dimension... but it will be the standard residential size). After drawing a circle on the 2x6, we're going to get our router and use our DIY router jig to route out a 360 degree circle to the edge of that drawn circle. After that, we'll just rout out the remaining material. Once we have hollowed that out about 1/4", then we're going to position the sink drain area on that and use a hammer to carefully bend the edge of the drain where the flange needs to be. That should give us sufficient drop in the copper to seat the drain like you see in commercially available sinks. If that doesn't make sense... You'll have to wait until we get back to the sink project, which is in the future, because we'll how how we end up doing it! Hope that helps, Luke! Are you building a Skoolie too? - Brian + Erin
@lukesimpson5550
@lukesimpson5550 3 года назад
@@BEAdventurePartners No skoolie here just a mudroom sink and countertop replacement . My wife wasn't pleased by my suggestion theat we take hammers to the wash basin, not at all. Thats actually quite similar to the plan i had. I have a scrap chunk of 6x12 i was going to Cup out with something i just had't quite figured out what yet ... Thougbh my method was a bit more crude than your plan . (beat a divot into the wood .then beat the copper till it matches ..) I'll look into your method a ltttle more before I try mine.
@lukesimpson5550
@lukesimpson5550 3 года назад
@@BEAdventurePartners So I wound up doing a hybrid method of using a hole saw that matched the OD of my drain flange drilled into a scrap 4x6 about 1/4" then used a wood chisel to remove the wood from the interior or the hole saw ... well hole. Then using a ball peen hammer beat the edge of the hole down creating a gentle slope towards the hole created by the drill. Then proceded to drill the hole in the bottom of my washtub, lined it up over the depression in the wood and gently peened it to match the slope and shape of the wood. Wound up using a vessle sink drain for its slanted sides that help shape the copper and allow for a better seal. I'm using the rubber gasket that came with the drain right now but may put a plumbers putty seal under it to get it just that much further recessed into the hole. Hope my exp helps you either as a what to do or a what NOT to do . Cheers!

@sandymckee6958
@sandymckee6958 2 года назад
Great job on sink, however I was worried that you were going to solder inside sink as you did. Solder is made of lead. I'd suggest you do research on lead poisoning guys. Seriously it has high risk of making you sick. Especially being in a sink where you do dishes and possibly wash veggies and most definitely acidic veggies.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 2 года назад
Hey there @Sandy Mckee! That is a solid observation that SOME solder contains lead. Before doing this, we consulted with a plumber about which solder does NOT contain lead as potable water copper pipes are brazed together using lead free solder and we used that stuff because we use this sink daily to wash fruits, veggies, wash dishes and do sink things. That's a great concern and a perfect note for those looking to do something similar. It's been awhile since we filmed this, but part of me thinks that I may have mentioned that the solder is lead free... But I could be wrong... Thanks again for dropping this hot tip and for watching! - Brian + Erin
@watahyahknow
@watahyahknow 4 года назад
you need to make a dimple where the drain will go so the edge of the drain itself is lower than the sink floor and its perfectly flat so the gasket will seal , there special dies to do that , could be someone making sinks has one , or if you have access to a lathe you can make one its sumting that tooks sumting like this : i.pinimg.com/originals/39/14/c4/3914c480a1af7994beb495d606b95911.jpg but making a flat round step where the drains edge will fit intoo as for soldering , putting the flux on there before soldering helps a lot wicking the solder in , i seen people putting the solderwire inside the joint before hammering it together , they heat it up untill it crawls out of the joint make for verry neat joints with little solder showing , then again scrubbing it with steelwool probably takes a lot of the solder off in the inside corners of the sink too if she likes soldering so mush she might want to try making tiffany lamps or stained glass windows , its an old art and if youre good at it you could make some money with it you need a way heavier anvil to make the joints sharper when you hammer it over (the anvil needs to be heavier then the hammer puonding on it so its doesnt move away when hit together like a 5 pound hammer holding the piece up and hammering it down with a 2 pound hammer ) making the dents is called peening and one good thing about it is that youre less likely to see scratches in the soft metal , the finer you make it the better it will look and the stronger the material will be www.quickshipmetals.com/quickshipmetals_decorative-bright-hammered-NY-New-York-stainless.jpg they use hammers like these images.globalindustrial.com/images/275x275/MRQ_276-168FG.jpg i bet you can get the same effect with an airchissel and an adapted chisselpiece (needs to me rounded and have a spring return so the chissel comes off the metal when moved ) you know even if the copper can turn black if you dont treat it (metal varnish?) , the end result looks great , might make one too but use brushed brass
