We did a lot of research to find the perfect waterproofing for the curved shower in our skoolie. Most products were going to be too rigid, complicated, or end up making the wall too thick... Until we found Schluter Kerdi Board V!
Installing the Schluter Kerdi Board was fun, and gosh... It turned out amazing! You could quite literally use Kerdi Board for any application. It's perfect for tiny living because it doesn't take up much space, and you can apply all-set/grout directly to it.
Come see how we created a smooth yet sleek waterproof shower in The BEAP Mobile.

💑 Who Are BE Adventure Partners?
Our big goal is to inspire others to think outside the box & get creative with life. You see… Life pushed us to want to live differently. Think differently. And BE different.
After being knocked down a few times, and falling deeper into debt we realized we needed to make some big changes. Story after story we kept hearing about people digging themselves out of the financial hole when they decided to live smarter & simpler lives.
That’s when doing a school bus conversion rolled into our lives.
We've certainly have lots in store for you if you want to:
- take what’s old & make it new
- live more cohesively with others & nature
- learn to live more sustainably
- and... BE inspired to think freely
Currently, we are renovating an old school bus into a tiny home on wheels. After that, we are going to take you on a journey to meet the people who inspired us to live a smarter & simpler lifestyle.
Big LOVE! Thanks for BEing here!

This is simular to what I am designing right now for my 45' Blue Bird. I used to work for Country Coach in Oregon for many years building the Country Coach Motor Coach and the Prevost that is built for entertainers, Hollywood and the wealthy. I have built many in my time and a fair share on Skoolies. Best of luck.

Sounds like you’re going to have a pretty cool Skoolie with those skills @Kevin McCarthy! Are you going to share your build on YT or IG for us to follow? We see the question around the Skoolie community a lot about how does grouted in tile hold up in a motorhome. What insight do you have as to which type of grout works best or should moving vehicles stay away from tile all together? Thanks for watching! - Brian + Erin

@@BEAdventurePartners HEY, WOW I got a cool reply. I would go to a real tile store, NOT a Big Box Store, and talk with them, back in the days, late 80's when I worked in the factory there was a flex additive to add to your grout. It was added to prevent cracking, worked great.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 3 года назад
@@kevinmccarthy6862 so cool to know about the flex additive! We have a real tile store down the street from us who only deals tile and flooring (not a chain, big box). Now we know what to ask them regarding the grout. Our idea is to use probably a river rock "tile" for the shower floor (you know those pebbles that are on a mesh mat?) and then grout that in. Afterwards, we have an idea for the walls that was inspired from our travels in Mexico, Central and South America. You'll have to wait to see what we do with that! We appreciate you taking the time to watch our videos and comment! We do our best to reply back to everyone with a meaningful comment to contribute back to the community! - Brian + Erin

@@BEAdventurePartners YES, I am in the design stage right now, my plan for my Skoolie is GO BIG OR GO HOME TO A STICK BUILD HOME. 40' Custom Skoolie is currently on my drafting table with two level roof raise and a floor drop, all hand build with a one of a kind floor plan, not bragging, it's going to be custom for sure, it will all be on RU-vid. Best of luck to you both.

@@BEAdventurePartners Good to hear all that you said in this reply. YES, independent businesses are the best in my opinion, Big Box Store are not much real help with technical issues, they just take you money. I buy ALL of my materials and building supplies through contractors wholesale warehouses for the best price point and true expertise. Just a lil secret about my Skoolie design, shower for 2 with some very HOT accessories that will have to wait for the reveal of the final episode when I will show the custom shower for 2 and all that it has to offer my hot lil lover and I, she is very excited and can't wait to shower together. We will be full time on the road and I'm planning to pull my enclosed 30" shop trailer to help build Skoolies on the road. Best of luck

I started looking into using this product and have learned a lot about it that makes me nervous. One guy is adamant that you use Ardex 8 plus 9 to completely cover your Kerdi to ensure there is no way water will get under or around your Kerdi membrane. He has worked with having to completely rip out these shower floors and reinstall them due to water sitting underneath the Kerdi membrane due to there being slight cracks that are missed. Just thought I would pass along the information since you are working with a lot of curves, etc. It might be a good idea to invest in that Ardex 8 plus 9. If you are curious about who I got this info from, he is a youtuber. His channel is called TileCoach. He says that thinset will not waterproof your shower, that is why he uses Ardex 8 plus 9 to waterproof the showers he installs.

Oh wow! That’s some great tips you got here! We’re no tile pros, however, we do know that the Schluter system is waterproof when installing to their specifications! Also, the only Kerdi membrane we’re using is the band with the Schluter AllSet. When installing as they instruct, a waterproof result is had. We’ll check out what you mentioned fo sho! Oof...32 to 30 inches in one direction? I would not survive that. 36 at a minimum in any direction...and that would still not make me happy. And I am not fat. But if I were designing the bathroom, I would probably use an entire third of the bus, so ignore me. Shower space is critical for me. But so are hot twenty minute showers too. That is a difficult demand in a skoolie/RV/tiny house. Yet I am considering a tiny house. I guess I better go for a 24 footer with a loft, at least! (And a 240v connection for a serious inline water heater)

Now at this point we had already done A LOT! But if you break it down into parts, it makes it less daunting. Hope that answers your question. for a second after you guys cut it i was thinking i hope they use the right side up on the mould glad you did think when the seller was talking about the groves in the v board he was talking bout filling the grooves from the back after it was screwed down , i think it will be a lot stronger if you fill and tape the open grooves that are visible between the studs from the other side of the wall now that its mounted its a nice system though . dont think they sell anything like it in europe if you cant find the smooth wall stuff (dunno bout that as you would see everything on it that isnt smooth and it might show cracks ; then again you might find something that looks like linoleum or thin plastic that you can stick to the backing board ) you could do those mini tile mats www.ninos-naturstein.com/en/minibricks-nero-natural-stone-mosaic.html

Concrete is a bad idea in shower. It is too easy to crack especially going over bumpy roads not to mention just driving where people already have cracked tile in normal shower walls
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
That’s a great tip for anyone using traditional concrete! However, we’re not 😜 we ran across a company who specializes in a concrete vibration resistant product that you’ll have to stay tuned to see what it is! Also, we totally agree that using big tile is not the best idea because of cracking and the whole tile would have to be replaced if broken. As for smaller tile, grout cracking will always be an issue too if not using a grout with elastic properties. Luckily, the product we plan on using we can take some backup with us so if it ever did crack, we could easily patch it!
