In this tutorial, I'll show you how to case bind a hardcover book. I've found there are many variations of case binding methods. None are necessarily better than others, they are just slightly different and up to your personal preference. This is what has worked for me so far, but I'm always learning. You're welcome to make your own variations based on my tutorial to suite your own preference.

❋ IMPORTANT TIP ❋
Whatever material you use for the cover (fabric or paper), if it is really thick, you should add the width of it (ex. 2mm) to the "gap width". This will compensate for the thickness and allow the cover to still hang over the text block.

METRIC MEASUREMENTS: 1/4 inch: approximately 6.3 ~ 6.4 mm (exactly 6.45 mm) 1/8 inch: approximately 3.2 mm (exactly 3.175 mm) 1 inch: approximately 2.5 cm (exactly 2.54cm) Also, thank you very much for this video, as well as your series of bookbinding videos! It makes simple bookbinding really accessible to many people worldwide who may not have access to more formal lessons or apprenticeships, or may not come from a bookbinding culture, or have even been exposed to the craft before. :)

The rather lower educated americans use inch and farenheit (highschool). But at least when working with american engineers they know about the SI and how much it is superior to this rather ... well, idiotic approach to temperature, length etc.
@mintbrownieangelfish-6114
@mintbrownieangelfish-6114 3 года назад
@@markfrinch7865 It's not just 'lower educated'. We are taught the metric system in elementary school. We just don't often use it outside of scientific field, and if you never need it, it goes away. Weather channels never use Celsius in the US, but we learned to convert Celsius and Fahrenheit in middle school. There's nothing wrong with the imperial system and it's not accurate to say everyone who uses it is uneducated. That's rediculous.
@jamestrebilcock8310
@jamestrebilcock8310 3 года назад
The imperial measurement system is superior. Those are freedom units. When the French learn how to win a war Americans can learn their inferior measurement system.
@UNR3S7
@UNR3S7 3 года назад
@@markfrinch7865 it may surprise you, but imperial isn't like objectively inferior to metric and it wasn't invented by idiots, it was invented by people who did a craft as a profession. Metric is better for science because of easy conversions when dealing with a lot of different units (eg: when dealing with volume, energy, and mass at the same time) and for things that require written math. But imperial units are more easy to estimate and are approximately scaled to our bodies and the things we actually use, and fractions and things with factors of 2,4,3,6,12 are easier to work with in your head. A way of measuring temperature isn't better because it is based on the boiling and freezing point of water rather than the range that humans sense as being cold or hot, and a way of measuring distance isn't better because it is based on the distance from the earth to the moon instead of approximate finger segment length and the amount of steps it takes to cover a distance. They are good for different purposes
@markfrinch7865
@markfrinch7865 3 года назад
@@UNR3S7 No, sorry to say, but you are wrong. Si is far superior, exactly because it is first of all defined by natural accurances that are reproducable - Farnheit is not, inch is not. Yes, it is also far superior in the most important part: application, conversion. It follows the logic of the decimal system and is thus easy to learn and apply. Period. That is why all engineers, physicists and mathematics around the globe use it. Prove enough. Sorry to break your world view.

I made a very tiny book with about 48 pages. I followed the instructions but used a cereal box for the cover and covered that in card stock because I felt chipboard was too heavy for the loose leaf paper I used inside. I didn’t think to use a ruler to line up the covers at the bottom, so it’s a little crooked and odd, but I love it! I am so excited to make more!

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ru-vid.comUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

Books in Asia aren't the cheapest and through watching your videos I've made the perfect hardcover book to scribble ideas on. I love it! Hi Sea Lemon. I just wanted to let you know that I actually completed my first hardcover book, that is, a journal, thanks to you! I completed it on Mar. 26 and it took me (on and off) 1 week after I got the cutting boards. It came out really nice (if I may say so myself) with the exception that despite my exact measurements, the end pages didn't quite reach the 1/8 inch from the edge of the cover (it was further away). Nevertheless, it came out great, with fabric cloth cover (I used fabric interfacing and it worked great!). I didn't put my photo on the cover, but I did a spiral notepad and put my lamented photos on it. But it was a struggle using a hole punch. I must buy the Japanese screw punch then it will be perfectly aligned (the holes). So thank you so much for all your tutorials and your inspiration. Hope to hear from you. Ciao!

@mibelloaleman 10 лет назад
***** Hi Sea Lemon! Thanks for replying! Yep, I am very please with my 1st (and hardcover) book! However, I can't say the same regarding the spiral notepads I've made so far. Since I don't have the Japanese screw punch (which I ordered today), the holes on the pages don't line up no matter how precise I am. Plus, the spiral gets all wonky and it's very frustrating. Also, I discovered that if I add a photo (using photo paper) on top of the cover cardboard, it MUST be thinner than the cardboard since it warps the cover if it's too thick (which happened already). So, I've decided to either use thinner photo paper or just buy the book board. Any suggestions I'll appreciate them. Thanks again for everything! Ciao!

I just followed a couple of your tutorials and hand-bound my first little notebook ever. I've wanted to get into book binding for YEARS, but I've always felt like it was too complicated and there were too many things you needed. Your tutorials were so easy to access and follow along to that I decided to just go for it, experimenting with types of paper for printing and everything like that. And now I have a nifty little booklet that I made *myself*! That's so cool to me. New hobby: achieved. Thank you so much for making these tutorials! I look forward to learning more and more as I go.

Dear Sea, I'm so thankful I found this video of yours. I've been doing bookbinding in this style for years, and this year, I'll be giving my first bookbinding workshop at Hobbit*Con 2016 in Bonn, Germany. Your video has been a huge help for me to get the translation right, thank you! :-) Greetings from Germany Judith

I was on a time limit because I was determined to make a custom sketchbook specifically for Inktober, and today, the last day of September, I can say that I have successfully bound my very first hard cover sketchbook. I had to cut SOME corners though because I didn't have the leasure time to wait for a lot of glue to dry so I used the sticky vynl they sell at the dollar tree for your shelves as a cover or something like that. I still used glue to make sure that it stuck, but only on the corners so that way I could just place and go. Thank you so so so so much, you have no idea what a big deal this is for me

Wicked tutorial. I design and sell adult coloring books on Amazon. So sick of the crap which passes for good books and artwork. So, I want to make my own. I know both metric and the traditional systems of weights and measures. Other common ways of referring to the system in the U.S. are: "Standard", "Customary", or, erroneously: "Imperial", or "Emperial." As far as looks are concerned? I checked out a professional book binder who also did this entire process by hand. And your work is no different than theirs. Other than the fact they used gold to emboss the covers. Wicked work. You should look into making some good money on the side. Very talented. Thanks a bunch. Damned. I didn't realize how old this video was. You probably own your own book binding company by now. LOL

Terry Hickman Watched it again...I think you do glue the spine board to the cover cloth when you're doing the cover boards too.
@SeaLemonDIY
@SeaLemonDIY 9 лет назад
Terry Hickman ***** For this type of binding, you only have to glue the front and back endpages to the cover boards. However, if you are making a softcover like this - bit.ly/XXlZ64 you can glue it to the cover.

***** Can you do this hardcover case binding with lay flat signatures. Do you have a tutorial that shows how to Make the signatures that lay flat, I know with coptic they lay flat but you see the thread on the inside, is that the only way? And if so can this kind of hardcover binding be added to the coptic? I suppose I have two questions, Sorry if it is sounds confusing. 1. I would like to make a lay flat signature book. and 2nd I would like to have a hard cover binding case on the lay flat signature book. Please let me know if you have a tutorial showing this or if this can be a tutorial that you can make. Thanks so much.

ynanahi Hi! I only have this hardcover coptic stitch tutorial currently - bit.ly/HardcoverCoptic. To make a similar book with a hardcover on the spine, you could try this method, but smaller/less pages if it's too much - bit.ly/DailyBook. Another alternative is with this binding method, but to add more pages, you can adjust the width of the spine to fit more binding holes similar to the "Daily Sketchbook" - bit.ly/118kZo9. Hope that helps!

is there any way you could use plated metal or wood instead of cardboard? I take my journals through hell and back, through rain and snow---and I feel that a tiny piece of cardboard just wouldn't hold

i believe you could definitely use a thin sheet of wood, just make sure the edges are sanded when you cut out your pieces. you could also purchase the pre-cut wooden plaques. if you want a more comprehensive list of materials you could use for a wooden 'base', definitely check out the Square to Spare. she uses a lot of different pieces of wood that i could see as suitable for what you want. for wooden covers, you could just use wood glue. plated metal, i feel, wouldn't stick to fabric very well unless you use epoxy or a very strong glue; it also depends on what material you want. leather and heavy-duty fabrics, like canvas, would probably adhere to metal better with epoxy. i'd make sure to spot-test fabrics like cotton and vinyl. hope this helped!

Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I've been making my own sketchbooks for years now and I always watch this video first to make sure I don't forget any of the details. Recently I've also incorporated the tearing of the watercolor paper instead of cutting it, to get those nice deckled edges. It's also a lot easier on the hands, I only have to cut the boards for the cover.

americans with there arbitrary imperial system metric is so much easier
@LiveLaughPlay
@LiveLaughPlay 9 лет назад
CYLON659 At this point it would be really confusing to switch to metric. I wish we would have started out with metric, but even if they started teaching kids metric there would still be the other generations who use imperial. There are too many people who would refuse to learn the metric system or simply couldn't get the transition (many people in this world have low IQ's). We'd end up with two systems lol. Imagine trying to change your country to imperial, how well would that work?

Live, Laugh & Play euhm canada did it and australia so yeah most of the old empire did exept america and at least teach it in schools i mean, at least know what the values are so when someone says 16mm you know what that is and many people have low iq's thats bs metric is always x10 not that hard 10mm=1cm but 14/16" they do understand you see what i mean? and in the middle ages we didn't use metric either it had to be taught back then to from el to m or something
@pixied1028
@pixied1028 7 лет назад
I don't think it is arbitrary it is simply what we are used to and prefer. They teach metrics in school, but they are soon forgotten as it is simply not used for most everyday items. Most people that use tools have both because of the few things that are foreign like a car, have metric. I don't see where it is any easier, nor worth the bother. It also sounds like you are the one with the issue, because you cannot translate the Standard into Metric as you were never taught. We don't want to be like that mess over there to begin with so why go by their ideals ?
@whoaretheseguys3336
@whoaretheseguys3336 6 лет назад
And here I thought the metric system was arbitrary. There was no need to run down Americans for the imperial system we use. We don't run down Brits for driving on the left side of the street. ;)

Eric Gilbert you know who else is a world superpower? Russia. Do they use the metric system? Yes. Besides, all America is now is a shitstorm deceiving itself into thinking it’s great. And I say this as an American.

Because America likes to be a little shit lol (As a person who lives in the US, I don’t understand why we can’t all just use the same measuring system)
@jazzyfizzle3881

Because we are essentially a bunch of idiots who feel the need to be special, so we make up incredibly stupid different measurements because it's too hard to just decide on one specific thing.
