DIY Headless Guitar from old Ibanez, I cut the head off & installed new bridge,explained w/details!

I made a headless guitar from an old Ibanez and filmed the entire process, DIY tight budget of $175 with cheap easy to find tools.
In search of a knock around travel guitar which I could fit in small places as well as plug headphones into and play clandestinely, I hit a wall. all the options were either expensive, fragile, short scale, unplayable, unpractical or some combination of the previously mentioned.
I decided to DIY it, others have done it. So I bought an ebay pawn shop special Ibanez grx20 and a Chinese headless bridge and nut and grafted them together.
watch and see...

Nice work! I like that you left in all the small mistakes and explained how you corrected them. Kudos! I hope that instrument will serve you well for a long time.

Just realized how easy I have it with a cnc router. Doing a similar headless, except its gonna be an exact copy of the spirit.

Yeah. Too many tools, I have a mini mill I could have attached a router bit to but I didn't think it would be so involved. That one I used was ok for what it was, borrowed

Thanks alot, it was alot of work, but you can do it too. Even without a router you can do this. Take your time and have fun.

Good video. I wondered about doing such a mod myself, and I came to the conclusion that its probably best to semi detach the headstock and leave a little room for tuners that only act as string lock. I would then go ahead and get those single tuner barrels for the bridge end and mount them on top of a 2 point trem plate, maybe a 6 point. Would probably have to stand them off a litlle and then lower the whole thing to be able to get lower action. Ive seen someone do this here on yt. Pretty crafty. That way you can still use the og trem cavity rout as opposed to the steinberger style trem.

Many have asked about the truss rod, that seems to be the main drawback of my installation. ive been waiting for it to warp before addressing it by drilling an access hole between the 3 and 4 strings at the nut so i may slip in an allen. So far it hasnt warped but i picked this guitar bc it seemed sturdy and i think i put 9s or 10s on it so it wouldnt warp easily. I wanted it small so i did what i did, but the way you mentioned is kind of how my full size with a floyd rose is set up, its definitely easier to tune and keep tuned. This guitar was made for the sake of itself for fun and cheap, if i was going to make an heirloom or something nicer there are several companies that make fantastic headless parts to spec. I used the cheapest china stuff on mine. Thanks for the comment! And good luck!

A cool build. I do similar stuff. I mod Ibanez replacement necks and make my own bodies. Moding an existing body is an even greater challenge (as you know by now). I did one build with that exact same bridge, but the trem spring is too stiff for Ernie Ball 8's. I prefer the Steinberger "R" trem (AKA "Overlord of Music"). You don't have to pre-cut strings to length, the trem uses a thumb screw - not an allen, and it has a built-in hardtail lock for fast and easy restringing (lock it, tune it, thumbscrew to float, unlock, done). It also has a left-hand position for the whammy bar - but only comes with a right-hand whammy bar. I use the horizontal style of nut installation, as opposed to the tilted back style you used. It seems to be the more common method used by most manufacturers (including Steinberger). For bridge placement, I typically set the saddles all the way forward, and position the bridge so the saddles are at the theoretical saddle line as measured from the nut line. This typically puts #1 string spot on, and then you adjust the rest to the normal double compensated pattern. You should give your guitar a proper paint job. It's a nice build - it deserves a nice finish.

Thanks it's kind of a knock around unit for playing on breaks and on the road etc, thus the truck bed liner finish and selection of entry level guitar as it would just get scratched again. I found that the bridge spring was too loose for the strings I chose which were on the heavier side so I just locked it out, it does have a lock out opposite of the whammy bar. The nut that I used felt sub par and I didn't trust the hardware it came with, also the angle gave some issues. A flush mount or flat would be much better. Thanks for watching!

Yo! Thats a little endeavour! I love headless bro, i have Strandberg and Legator....that looks like an Ibanez headless!! Did you really spend only 175..?!? I paid that only for a headless neck - its a 7 strings, no dots and has a tapered profile, really quite nice, made in China...but i haven't started the build yet. Much more problematic with a tremolo....I would paint it bro... and have you seen Harley Benton headless? They are very good for the money but you might have to pay import tax...still it will etay in tune! Well done mate! 🤘👽

One thing I noticed, you could have used the wood you cut off the back to make the plug then it would have matched up. Nice work though. P.S. Please polish the frets :)

I had originally planned to drill a hole through the nut but I haven't needed to adjust the truss rod yet, probably soon, the guitar takes some abuse.

First, nice job. Second, you let me down by not actually putting out the album "reorienting the jack hole." You don't put that idea out into the world and then not follow through. Bad form, sir. 😂

Thanks, and unfortunately I seem to lack the attention span to concentrate on an album, or practice, or playing in general most of the time. Think lame business/family man Marty mcfly in back to the future 2: I pick up the guitar occasionally, make it make a noise, cringe at my hand like it's my hands fault, put it down and continue on my way. I'm hoping for an industrial accident requiring early retirement and disability to concentrate on my hobbies more seriously, like Dick Proenneke or Tony Iommi.

@normbarrows
@normbarrows Год назад
Not really possible with a Steinberger type nut. If you use string anchors (like those used with barrel tuners) you can still have a decorative headstock. On Steinberger builds I add a hanger bracket between the nut and the end of the neck. It goes back and up behind the nut, with a peg hole for hanging the guitar on a nail, peg, or hanger. It's nice to have when the neck doesn't come with headstock shoulders above the nut for hanging the guitar on a regular hanger.
