This Stihl MS660 chainsaw is in great condition other than a stripped spark plug hole. The Sav-A-Thread kit is what I used to make this repair. I've fixed 3 different saws with this kit. Available on Amazon at the link below. Good luck with your repairs!

Good video sir. I saved myself from having to buy a new 460. I did have to use an o ring pick with grease on the end to get out a few stubborn chips but other than that it was a simple process.

I don't see why you would need the ultra black sealant if you set the insert below flush level. I would think the spark plug would seal anyway.

Good video and a nice long one after a long hiatus. I had the same thought about threading in the spark plug when you weren’t getting the insert in. Not cheating at all in my opinion.

I liked the longer format video. Good camera angles too. You need smaller hands, though.

Would it be possible to open the exhaust port then connect shop vac on the port then it would pull the chips thru the tap flutes and out the exhaust.

Maybe stuff a shop towel down the plug hole and prevent even more shavings from falling in, then pluck it out with long nose pliers.

Nice video. Thank you for sharing. Just thinking. Would that silicone gasket maker stop a minor air leak at around 130psi. I would have thought one that hardens may be better. Hopefully someone can answer for me. Cheers

I woulda used locktite of some sorts. That black rtv is only good for 700*. Not sure what egts a saw gets. If the helicoil mfg says to use rtv that's what I'd do.

Just completed my first repair. I found that the original threads were so badly damaged and mostly broken off and missing that the tap struggled to go in straight. Once it got in to the tapered potion of removing just before the insert threads began it did not have any original thread to hang on to. The tap at that point simply fell loose and was somewhat tenuous to get the tapered cut to stay perpendicular. It finished but was not what would be a perfect perpendicular alignment, but it worked.

Thank you for this very nicely detailed video and excellent explanation. My question would be, what is it that people are doing to strip out a spark plug hole in the first place? I've used chainsaws and other small engines for a long time and I've never stripped a spark plug hole.
@tallfarmboy
@tallfarmboy 6 лет назад
TheCrittercam001 Overtightening, and then lack of changing the spark plug... When it gets removed the next time, the aluminum from the cylinder transfers onto the steel of the spark plug. So, the next time they put in a spark plug, there is less thread material left in the cylinder.. So, they go to tighten the new plug and it doesn't take much to strip the few threads out.

All that is probably true but my daughter has a Stihl chainsaw that had never had a new plug removed or installed and after a few uses it blew out the factory installed plug.
@Mentorcase
@Mentorcase 4 года назад
I am generally not a clutz but I managed to do it once, my plug was well recessed into the engine and only had a short thread with a tapered seat and it is easy to get it started crossed, you don't realize until you get it part the way in and it gets tight as well as the spanner is long with a handle sticking out one side of it.

Yea my honda gx160 randomly decided to grenade the plug out of it about 100 foot in the yard. I tightened it back on and first pull, boom, shot the sonna bitch another hundred foot and only found it that time with the damn lawnmower later on.. but that motor has only had one new one and even greased it before but guess the gas i used or sonething after 8 yearz decided to eat through it..

My Stihl was bought new 3 yrs ago. I never touched the plug and I used it a some , not a lot. Last time out it just quit in the middle of a cut. Plug was loose and came out with the wire. Aluminum was stuck to the plugs steel threads. Either factory over tightened or poor design (aluminum to steel) . This issue is way too common on RU-vid. It should of had a steel plug insert in the first place.

What size do you use? I bought 5334-14. For Stihl 211 that fits a NGK CMR6H. Can I make the hole bigger and use a different sparkplug?

Nice video. Question: Is there a separate kit for each size of spark plug hole? I know Stihl, for example, has at least 2 diameters. Thanks
@tallfarmboy
@tallfarmboy 4 года назад
That's a great question. This kit is only for the larger size of spark plug threads. The smaller diameter threads would require a different approach. I don't think there is a Sav-A-Thread kit for that smaller thread size.

I noticed kits for 10 and 12 m helicoils. Any way to determine if theses woul work? Might not be Sav a thread.

How do you know what size inserts to buy? I have no idea the size of my spark plug.
@tallfarmboy
@tallfarmboy 5 лет назад
Spark plugs are relatively standard sized... The kit in the link has 3 different length of insert, but they are all the same thread size.
@samsnushall1668
@samsnushall1668 4 года назад
With the exception of a few, most plugs are a standard thread. Measure the depth, and you are concerned a thread guage and chart are very cheap and save any mistakes. Or even a thread guage and google hope this helps

@tallfarmboy
@tallfarmboy 3 года назад
Any type of grease will work fine. It is just there to collect the shavings that are created when tapping the threads.

Couldnt have found a better video for my application...a 660, with lots of hours and a stripped out plug...same exact kit. Never used a helicoil...lots of thread chasing and use of taps and dyes over the years ( i might be hard on shit...but i am pretty certain i somehow end up withfactory defective stuff🤔) defective) I really appreciate you taking your valuable time to help out those of us that can only afford to attack our own projects! I would really love to say i have to leave the head on for some reason...but laziness is really the excuse...i also know that there is a great chance that ill find more issues the further in i go...piston and rings...grrrrrr
