In this video we focus on how to create your own hidden compartment for storage with "rev-a-lock" or "rev-a-shelf" magnetic locks. We're not suggesting some tacticool hidden drawer solution. We're just demonstrating how we utilize what would have been dead space into useful hidden storage. specifically this storage is NOT for quick access.

I like it and your video actually explain how things work I like that so many videos online that they're doing doing cool things but they're not explaining how they're doing it, and another idea what about doing the cabinet face in plexiglass that has been scored on the back side installed and painted like the wood that way you kick it or hit it the plexiglass breaks quick access and still very invisible

There may be utility in the addition of heavy duty (perhaps 15kg pulling force) magnetic door catches. They would inhibit movement or rattling of the door caused by contact with the door or vibration of the cabinet. It seems this would reduce the likelihood of detection, and a heavier pulling force could also serve to convince a more determined investigator that the panel simply conceals dead space rather than a secret compartment.
@mattkarasch8740

Shouldn't the angled side of the catch be facing outward so the striker gets pushed in when closing but stops with the perpendicular edge?

Good idea nicely done!! Just a quick tip if I may. If you are putting a weapon in there for home defense. I would have only used one lock in the middle of the door. Its quicker to access. Also take the magnetic key and conceal it...say in a salt shaker or a figurine that only a few know about. Then it can be left out close to the lock
@BreakItYourself

for home defense my weapons are much easier to get to or at 5 o' clock. I mainly use this as storage for ammo cans

To avoid the hassle of getting the double-sided tape off the cabinet and door, put painters tape there first, it has plenty of stick (and you'll put several inches more than you need for the template) and comes off very easily.

The problem is that a quick slap to the panel you were able to here that it was loose indicating that it is a stash and a quick butter knife will open it revealing the prize. Maybe elongate the two holes on the strike and slide it in deeper(she said) will fix it. Other option little foam tape. Concept is great. Thanks.

I liked your video, there was only one thing that I would change about the installation. And I think this makes common sense. When installing locks, I would put the locking mechanism as far away from the catch device to ensure zero play when pulling on the door. If I found something like that I wouldn't hesitate because I knew there'd be something in there. It should be as tight as possible: no movement of the door. Again, not criticizing, just trying to give constructive criticism. Thanks for the video!

I don't like the fact that the panel you installed the magnet catch lock on has play in it. If it was a decorative panel only it would be attached firmly with no play. Granted, I know that thieves would snatch & grab, spending as little time in the home as possible and probably would never notice that panel anyway, especially with no knobs or pulls on it. It just bothers me that once the panel closes and clicks shut it isn't flush with no play. It shouldn't wiggle.

I like the idea, but is there a specific reason to have 2 locks, with 2 magnet keys. It seems one lock with 2 keys would be more ideal if you want to open them up quickly and just incase you lose a key. Also are you able to find the spot to unlock them very quickly, or while under stress? I may use these at my house but I’m thinking of maybe putting an inconspicuous index point or something.
@BreakItYourself
@BreakItYourself 6 лет назад
yeah the purpose of this storage isn't for quick access during stress. I'm usually carrying on my person most of the time. This storage is just hoping to avoid a smash and grab robbery. and i will say that after a few months sometimes i forget exactly where the locks are and i have to move the magnet around a bit haha I mostly use this storage for ammo

ShadowMage3D Power to the locking device is the main problem with an RFID lock. But they are cooler. And still relatively affordable. They are already available on Amazon, no real need to hack an arduino to do it. Just make sure that you have it fail open when it loses power. You can have it connected to your modern home alarm system to give you a warning when that happens.

@@BreakItYourself that a problem. Did you need someone else to bring it to your attention to adjust it. It's a great idea. Other methods of this exact same thing have been used for years. Street hustlers are in & out pretty quick. This kind of hiding place is "good" not perfect but good. I was in a home the other day. The people had inherited the home from the grandparents. One room in the middle of the house was a walk in safe. Supposedly the walls were 18 inch concrete. Thick metal plate. The door was a huge bank style. Had a large tumbler with the large multiple spinner handle. I have no idea what the grandparents kept in this safe. These people were told if the wanted the room back for being just a room. (Remove the safe) they basically would have to take the house down. The had the lock disassembled so one kid can't lock another inside. Real burglars know where to look for valuables and guns. Remember the old saying. "Locks are to keep honest people honest" Burglars find these places. Druggies miss them.

I like how you don't even bother calling 911 while you look for a weapon lock release...

except for the fact that it seemed like the latch was mounted a bit forward to much & causes the door to be able to rattle, being a tale tale clue, I would scoot the latch back a bit & tighten it up a smidge.

Pressure treated lumber is safe to use indoors. MCA (micronized coppoer azole) is safe for humans and animals. I personally don't use it indoors when I can use a different type of lumber.

I like those floating shelves in your kitchen. Did you make them yourself?

Could also be used for other valuables if you're not into guns, which I''m not.

I'm sure someone may have already commented, but your latch will be more solid if you'd turn your strike plate around... (6:24 mark)

I used the same latches on a hidden wall gun cabinet. Never'd know it was there...

Unfortunately that’s how these are designed. They only work installed in that direction. I thought the same thing too when installing them
