I think in my state (NY), if you're buying a house, you need to have the home inspection done by an independent contractor. I found this helpful as far as looking at the house now after we've been here 10 years. Thanks Larry!

Believe it or not, I am currently dealing with one of the few things you mentioned. My floors were becoming uneven and my interior doors wouldn't close properly. I hired a foundation company to come out and they said that everything looked good, but I needed more piers under the house. I purchased everything they suggested, got under the house (17" crawlspace) proceeded to install new piers. When I went to jack up a joist, the jack went into the joist about an inch. I have to REPLACE six joist due to the A/C condensate line leaking for who knows how long. So, I have learned that you can't always trust a 'professional.' You are your own best advocate.
