This time we solve the problem of what to do with hood hinges that had mighty springs for a heavy hood that we replaced with a carbon fibre part. Lots of engineering and a little help from our friends gets the job done.

The most reliable way to "calculate" springs is to buy all the springs and test to see which one works the best!

your devotion to the project is amazing. it surely will be one 'eck of a car when done. Is there a source for calculating the gas strut power and length by any chance?
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage Год назад
Thanks - it's enjoyable once you acknowledge it won't be done this summer. There are some simple online calculators, but nothing that I found could handle this type of linkage. I didn't do a great job of explaining how I came up with the force needed. The hood at the latch weighs 3.5 kg and is 1200 mm long to the pivot. From that you can compute the torque and get an approximation of the force. I had a friend measure how much force was required to move the stock hinge. With these data, I backed out the approximate force needed at the spring mount point. The stroke was a matter of packaging and placement and I did that in Fusion 360. It could also be done manually once you know where you want to push the linkage.
@ronkluwe4875
@ronkluwe4875 Год назад
Great work as usual, but I have to ask why didn't you make the hinges out of carbon fiber plate? With all the work into the carbon fiber bodywork, making the hinges out of CF would be in theme with the rest of the car. No criticism here, just wondering.
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage Год назад
Until I read your comment it never crossed my mind. Now it's crossing my mind - I'm not going to do it, but it's an excellent idea. Various companies offer carbon angle and SendCutSend have the flat stock. Only the hood attaching bracket that needs special bending could not be done. Hmmm.
@ronkluwe4875
@ronkluwe4875 Год назад
@@ThrottleStopGarage Could do the special angle as a handmade layup plate and then cut to final finish. Hmmmmm :)
@Equine_frederikke
@Equine_frederikke Год назад
Your attention to detail is as impecable as always! I wonder if the tolerances in the old hinges wasn’t by design, and the rust actually “shimmed” that out? Car builders almost always goes by “good enough”, and some sloppiness in the hood hinges would allow for some misalignment on all the other parts. And with the hood being aligned by the front (maybe some rubbers on the fenders?) it would be easier install originally and after the first couple if elk and snow drift incidents.
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage Год назад
I think they were pretty tight. The trunk hinges were tight when new. There was a lot of clearance on these panels in general compared to a modern car.
@NathanNostaw
@NathanNostaw Год назад
Those came out great. What material were the bushes? As for the rough slots in the base brackets, how did that happen. The parts all look like mirrors or each other and the others looked correct.
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage Год назад
The bushings are all nylon. Should outlast the hinges. I forgot to dimension four of the six slots relative to the edge. Simple oversight. Four hours to repair.
@GrayRaceCat
@GrayRaceCat 10 месяцев назад
@@ThrottleStopGarageI'm surprised that SendCutSend didn't catch that when they reviewed the files before accepting them for manufacture. A missing dimension should have prompted a call or email. Someone made the decision to put the four slots where they ended up.
@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage 10 месяцев назад
@@GrayRaceCat 100% my fault - I got these done and sent them in. I should have waited a day and checked them over one last time. I got impatient and I paid. I'm learning and making these mistakes is part of that process.

@ThrottleStopGarage
@ThrottleStopGarage Год назад
There are lots of great tutorials on YT featuring Fusion 360. I'd suggest those by Lars Christensen ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A5bc9c3S12g.html The process is pretty simple and the sheet metal tools for bends etc are fantastic for parts that are going to get bent. SendCutSend.com has some guidelines for their requirements. Fusion 360 is free for home-gamers.
