Bunch of armchair contractors here. I'm a licensed general contractor in two states, I've specialized in finish carpentry for the last 10 years. I. Am. Damned. Good. I can't fault this guy. I wouldn't do some things the same way, but this is gold. I remember starting out over 20 years ago. I would have given... quite a lot to have access to a video like this. Good job, dude.

The trick where you cut the studs and pull them out to not damage the drywall on the other side is HUGE!!!! I have textured drywall and I was able to do this with very limited repair. Amazing! I used this in my basement bathroom video on my channel.

I really enjoy your videos! We are new home owners and I found you before we closed on our house. I was looking up painting. All of my friends ask, "Why aren't you taping?" All I have to say is, "Because you don't need to if you know how to cut." And they stop asking questions. Looking forward to putting in a pocket door in what will be our nerd office! Thank you!

Thanks so much for this video! After watching it I was able to install a pocket door in our small water closet over the weekend! AND was able to save the outside drywall when removing studs. That even allowed me to repurpose the studs I took out when reframing the pocket door. Excellent info, very DIY/Novice friendly. After watching this, I damn near looked like I knew what I was doing.
@brantleycmd

I will say I didnt cut the stud out with a reciprocating saw. I used my oscillator with a nail blade and went behind/above/below the studs and cut the nails, this allowed me to salvage the whole stud for reuse.

I added this to his comments - please don't learn from this idiot : OH MY GOD - if you thought it was structural why on earth didn't you support the head and adjacent joists - this is so unbelievable - anyone thinking they have a structural wall will do what you did! You are such an $%^£$ for putting this online as a 'how to' video... I can't believe you put this out there ... and 10 minutes 19 seconds in when you say level ... it's so far out of level it's a joke!

The ceiling height is about 82 inches (from inside the wall to the top of the frame, and I don't have a full 56 inches of width for the frame. The door(/frame) is 28 inches wide and 80 inches in height. Do you think its still possible to install this?

Some critical comments regarding safety below. First of all great video, one of the best I've seen. Safety is a personal issue. How you take on a project is up to you. The way you work I thought was very safe, not like a bull in a china shop but controlled with the right tools for the job - there is your safety straight away. Gloves were not necessary as some suggest, if anything would more likely reduce skill level and or tactileness that could lead to possible injury defeating the object. I am a great advocate of safety glasses but I didn't see any grinders going for this job so again not totally necessary with the reciprocating saw - if using a multi tool then yes you would wear safety glasses. Anyway very clear video with a good demonstration on efficiency, safe working and alround neat, clean workmanship. Keep up the good work.

Great video! It must suck to have so many armchair safety officers scrutinizing your work. Most likely, they have never performed this kind of work, used power tools or any hand tools, for that matter. I agree with your approach to safety. Just a suggestion, however, to quell all the noise from others...add a disclaimer at the start of your video. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Greg. As I am sure you can understand there are 2 kinds of people watching these videos. Those who are looking for information and those you are looking for opportunity to reinforce their own screwed up belief systems regarding how they build what they build and the way they do it. I do tend to hear from a lot of the insecure jealous types but accept that as a part of the job. Thanks for your comment you are welcome to an opinion any time.
@ward26102
@ward26102 6 лет назад
Home RenoVision. Hmm. You are calling people who are asking you to set the example when it comes to safety equipment "looking for opportunity to reinforce their own screwed up belief systems"? That is out in left field. Love your videos, but from your responses to comments I believe you are showing your ass. Perhaps it would be best if you stuck to the instructional videos,, and if you refuse to wear safety equipment, expect the comments you will get and just move past them to the next comment. There is no point in disrespecting people who are proposing PPE, even if you personally don't use it. However do keep in mind, despite what some comments claim, that not everyone watching your channel is experienced with and/or old enough that you shouldn't at least mention the proper PPE at the beginning of your videos.

Thinking of tackling this project on a wall where I'm not sure is load bearing. I'm not as confident as you are to begin removing studs without the fear of having the ceiling cave in? Is that a legitimate fear? Are there any precautions I can take to support the wall as I'm installing the pocket door or should I figure out a way to provide temporary support while I do the install? Thanks!

Suggestions Please! SHOWER TILE will be installed on HardieBacker or similar on ONE SIDE OF POCKET DOOR. I think instead of the little 1x6 horizontal studs seen in the video, the area could be entirely filled with a similar thickness plywood sheet. Would this be strong enough to attach the shower door Side-Mount Hinge? plywood then hardieboard, then tile.

I have done that before with great success. Cheers!

Mine definitely is a load-bearing wall (1st floor in 2-story house). Don't I have to install a temporary wall before taking out the one that gets the new door? I don't yet know how much space I'll have...is the min. safe header paired 2x8? 2x6?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 6 лет назад
go with a 2x8 header because you will have the room. And yes you need to build a temporary wall on both sides about 2 ft from the wall you will be working on. Try to put the temporary studs directly under the joists if possible. cut them 1/8 longer than the space between the plates. wedge them in there good and use a set screw so they don't get accidentally knocked out. Once you are done remove the screw and knock them out again. Good luck. Sorry I don't have a video on this subject yet.

That is very clever how you left the front of the drywall in tact

Thanks for great advice. Excellent tutorial. Could you share the name of the pocket door manufacturer you used in the video and possibly where you sourced it? The links above don't seem to give this info. Thanks 🙂

The pocket door kit isn’t available anymore do you recommend any other kits?

I have been doing home remodeling for 23 years in most cases you should be able to determine a load bearing wall if that wall was load bearing once you remove the jack and king stud not no more for your own safety and the safety of the home built a temporary wall or walls a needed until you get the wall your working on completely framed up to code thanks for the video

Hi there...I would really like to get the same hardware for the pocket door you installed. Where did you buy the supplies? I have been trying to find the same one that you can take off easy once installed but I'm having troubles finding it.

I would certainly make sure any structural changes where braced while I worked, or at least make sure I knew exactly what was going on with the loads from above before pulling anything apart.

Nicely done, thank you for the video.You mentioned safety. LOL where were your safety glasses? No ER trips brother, eye doctors make enough money on regular appointments. I am starting my pocket door tonight, my oldest son is now in a wheelchair and this will make it easier for him in tight space I have in my home.

I’ll be having two pocket doors at my cabin. Any tips for the actual wall framing? It will be an inside non load bearing wall.
