This video demonstrates the replacement procedure used when replacing or fixing a broken tailgate handle. In this video, I happen to be replacing the tailgate handle on a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT, but the process will be the same or similar on many other pickup trucks including, F-150, F-250, Ford, Chevy, Dodge. This video also shows how to open the tailgate on a Ford Ranger when the tailgate handle is broken.

I really appreciate your video on this topic. My 2002 Ranger tailgate handle broke 3 days ago. I immediately purchased a replacement and have the ability to install it. Hello Mark, your video helped me get a taillight changed on my Ford Ranger. It wasn't the tail light it self that was a issue, but the fact that my tailgate was stuck shut (wasnt really an issue until then), and I couldn't get to the screws to get the taillight off. well as usual i tried to figure it out myself causing more of a problem (as far as time and energy) than having any real success. Finally I googled the issue and came across your video, and within ten minutes I had the tail gate down and the taillight replaced. I'm going to order a new metal handle and fix the tailgate it self next, thanks for the video and taking the time to help people by explaining things is such a simple, step by step manner

Really appreciate the video. Helped me out of a jam. My "Butterfly" has 2 groves in the bottom of the butterfly which made me think the "hooks" from the handle had to fit inside the groves. The handle hooks was too wide to fit in the groves. Your butterfly don't even have the groves, so I tried to just put them under the butterfly. Works like a charm. Thanks again.

My original handle had metal parts including the arms that push on the ears or wings. It seems like all the new ones are plastic. And, the links you provided are very general links to many handles, not just the one you used.

Thanks. I will be replacing the handle for a neighbor. On the studs, I will use external tooth lock washers to keep them from spinning. And finally, some lithium grease on all moving parts.

I had the same issue but I just retro fitted a metal chain where the handle was. It works but looks a bit weird.

Thanks, liked the video, but I found instead of digging around for the unknown, it's just as easy to remove the liner from the inside with the door up. The you can squeeze and open the door. I haven't got my handle yet, so........am having to open via alternate methods. Ha !!!!!!

There is a easy way to do this if you do not have a cover on your truck all the bolts are accessible from in the box . undo the metal plate falls behind the plastic pull up the plastic and take off reach in and open the tailgate from this point on the rest is the same .

Apparently these handles are just "piece of crap"... i just went to check on five Rangers for sale, and four of them had broken handles... luckily they are cheap and there's always someone to make a how-to video. Thanks buddy !

+Allbbrz You can find all metal handles for not much more, which will probably last as long as the truck (or tailgate) will. Not OEM obviously, but worth it.

What about an older model ranger? Like a 1985 model year specifically? It seems like the tailgate is welded shut all the way around. Any ideas?

Don't use the screwdriver method to open gate....easier to just access through the back and then use a screwdriver to pull latches over....thereby avoiding the big scratch I just put on my tailgate when the screw driver slipped off the tab trying to pry down through the handle opening.

Can you tell me what the part number is for those little plastic clips that attach to the latch rods? Because I took apart the mechanism on my 96 and the only part I have to replace is the handle, but the mechanism is missing the little plastic clips and I also need to replace those. Thanks!

On the assembly that pulls the arms back are two yellow clips that you can open and adjust the tension on. I broke one while fixing my dads tailgate and was wondering what the name of that part is so I can go buy new ones.

so far, the handle part is ok--my problem is the 2 white plastic pieces that connect the rod pieces connecting the handle actuator to the handle. i went to pick and pull, but every ranger they had had already been somebody's donor and i assume those white pieces are a common problem. i'd really appreciate the name & address or phone number for a supplier.

My issue isn't the handle, it's one of the interior release latch linkage rods (like these shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dorman-oe-solutions-tail-gate-release-latch-linkage-rods-924-302/16140413-P) except those don't fit a '96 Ranger. Anyone know where I can find one of those parts?
