DIY How to Replace a Household Septic Gray Water Pump-Full Replacement, Wiring, and Plumbing Tutorial. This project started when I walked outside the house and could smell the unmistakable dreadful odor of effluent septic water. My fears soon became a reality as I investigated the source. There was water flowing existing out the top of my green septic tank riser. Bad bad news. Anything else that I had planned had to take a backseat. I sat in disbelief and stared as I knew what was lying ahead of me. Put on my rubber boots and grabbed my gloves and popped the top of the green riser off with an Allen wrench bit on the cordless.

I then tried to switch the pump to "manual" mode on the septic electrical panel. No luck. The pump was dead and the water level was over the electrical box inside the effluent tank. It had to be pumped down. I checked the bus fuses inside the septic electrical box attached to the house and they were all good. Having done this before I had purchased a sump pump so I hooked it up and pumped the water down (pumped to the drainage mound) to a level where I could access the electrical box that had been submerged. As you can see these were not optimal conditions for an electrical box to function. After ensuring the wiring was sound I figured out that the pump was bad and needed to be replaced so I purchased one at a construction supply store that sold the pump that I needed. They rightfully cautioned me to make sure I was buying the right pump because a pump too powerful could rapidly degrade my drainage mound. I took their advice and checked the new pump to the old and they were the same. I pulled the new pump out and made sure it functioned. Then it was time to pull the old pump all the way out of the effluent tank and begin replace it. It was actually fairly simple at this point but just required some dirty work. I made sure to connect the new wiring the same as the old wiring. The new pump came with a wall plug so I had to snip the plug off for hard wiring into the electrical box.
