We purchased a trolling motor for the carp bow fishing season and the shaft was too short. So we replaced it. The video stops before we are complete on the reassemble, but if you follow the directions backwards from the beginning the only thing left is attaching to the controller head. Also i wanted to mention that we added lock tite, and silicone to the threaded end of the shaft.

This motor is exactly as advertised, it’s well made, easy to use and very powerful. We are happy

Thanks for the video. It took my friend and I 13 minutes to finish the jib from start to finish but I'm an electrician and he's a carpenter. Only difference was we did not have to take apart the motor we used a pumpkin carving knife to clean the threads with some air can spray. Thanks again

Acetone dissolves loctite for future reference. I just soak a rag in acetone and wipe the threads clean. Use red loctite on the the motor housing threads not the shaft threads on reassembly as per minn kota warranty procedure

Good video, at least I have a clue now. My 84 year old dad has wanted this done to a very old Mini-kota for a long time, I hope things haven't changed much. Thanks for the video!

I liked it in every catagory!!! Power is super, I hav a mariner4 & got the kayak version, even with two people & gear it performed well in a 9mph headwind with 6 inch chop!!! Battery life was all day good. (I went with a 75ah batt)

just a quick tip for minn kota trolling motor owners. Minn kota shafts come with a lifetime warranty. if the trolling motor is under two years shaft + labor is covered if you break/splinter the shaft. after two years you just pay the labor charge @ your local warranty center. just incase you dont want to spend your afternoon working on a motor when it could possibly be free or fora small charge be done correctly

The description says it all, we bought a trolling motor that was too short. I placed the link for where we bought the shaft in the link. They had excellent customer service, they were great to work with and even had a hand written note in the package thanking us for the purchase and letting us know that if there was any thing else we needed just to ask. It was not a factory shaft but it was a minkota replacement shaft.

original red Loctite from 1990 era is the seal on the shaft. shaft not to be heated .. the trolling motor to be heated for about 2 to 3 minutes and I used a pipe wrench to turn it and it was a fast job .. I will have a video in a week. I jammed the skeg in dirt to hold it down vertically.

Nice ,You put the magnet housing on with out making sure you had the timing mark lined up with the bottom fin.If you put it on upside down it will spin in reverse!

We used thread locker first than silicon on the top half of the threads. The motor worked great all season.

Good video, thanks. Had to use a small propane torch to get the housing end unscrewed. I called Minn-Kota Tech Support today about resealing the shaft to the brush end housing. Tech said the book calls for; "Red Loctite #271" for reassembly.

Thanks for the video. I'm doing the opposite - making my long shaft shorter. Your video helped me a lot.

This is great, thanks. I’m frankensteining the bow mount setup on my boat. It came with an old Motorguide but I came across a camo edition 55# MinnKotta. I’m just going to swap lower units out.

This video is like watching a 500 mile race and the tv turns off at lap 480. Who cares if the 480 laps were good or not if you don't get to see all of it....

You used silicone grease on the gaskets / o-rings before you reassembled it, right?

Why to replace it? To make it larger or shorter? Why not to use 2 coupling and seal them???

Great Video. I am in the process of refurbishing my motor because it fell in the ocean. I now understand there is salt water motors out there but i cant complain about a christmas present. I want to make sure i do a proper job with the seal bearing. I have replaced the seals and brass piece only to find grease inside the original. I was going to add a bunch of lithium grease then slide the shaft on. Any input?

Is your trolling motor the variable speed model or the 5 forward,3 reverse speed model? Would like to know if you can rotate the speed control 180 degrees on the variable speed model so you can mount it on the front of a small boat? Very easy on the 5 speed models. Pull the center screw, rotate the throttle 180 degrees, replace the screw, done. Not sure if it’s possible on variable speed model?
@glamdring0007

Pretty much the only difference between stern mount and bow mount...is the mount system. You can easily spin the head unit 180 to reposition the handle for bow mount use.

Do you have any idea if the head unit is just a controller? I'm trying to figure out if I can wire a lower unit direct to a power supply on off switch
@Androth

Bo Boura it had a circuit board in the head of this model. I wouldn't recommend going direct.

seeing as the wires need to be lengthened in the shaft why not just cut the shaft in half and then pull the wires out of the shaft with the head? then you never have to take the head apart. Un-thread lower half and Splice in new wire a bit longer than new shaft. thread in new shaft keeping wires from falling into shaft. butt connect wires to head wires and re-install head.
@Androth
@Androth 7 лет назад
tyronw5 because we can't slice in a longer shaft. The reason the wires needed to be extended is because we wanted a longer shaft.
@tyronw5
@tyronw5 7 лет назад
Travis Dragan wires got to be cut in order to extend it for a longer shaft. so cutting it in the middle and then extending it longer than needed for the new shaft and feeding it through the shaft before installing. same result

Dude, why are you grinding that thing into the pavement? Put something down to protect it from scratches, scuffs, and similar. Hell, for that matter, why are you working on the ground? A table or workbench would let you get at it easier.

if u just wanted to shorten the shaft y didn't u just take the top off(the controls) then cut the pipe to desired length and put it back on?

I have spoken to Minn Kota on this.. i have a endura 30.. heating up the top of the motor is correct.. not the fiberglass composite shaft.. new shafts run about $10. Also buy a seal and “o” ring kit for $4.00 for the motor sections.. to replace the armature, cut a 1/2 in. Wide toilet paper roll to hold the brushes open.. then install the armature.. the toilet paper cardboard will move forward and not cause a problem.. just leave it in there .. the tech said, you might find an old toilet paper roll in there the you first disassemble.. use a tap to clean threads if needed.. use red lock tight to seal the new composite shaft.. i have shortened my shaft to fit well on my kayak.. now i may have to lengthen it, to allow for the mounting of a weed chopper trolling motor helper.. i may have to tweak my weed chopper to fit on the kayak.. (old town vapor 10).. i am waiting for the weed chopper, to see what must be done..
