Just did this on my 2017 F150. Great video, right to the point. Took about 30-40 minutes - didn't watch the time. Buttons now work reliably and cruise control quit randomly dropping out.
Adding to my reply. Changed it for my 2018 F150 Limited. Three screws underneath are 7/32". 7mm was slipping around the head. Also one tip is to make sure your steering wheel is straight before disconnecting the battery. Everything else was great. I used Standard CSP293 clockspring. OEM was 50% more cost. Took me 50 min.
Allen wrench works well popping out the air bag too...great video. Thank you so much. Our issue was the horn stopped working. After a lot of trouble shooting....pressing the horn and turning the wheel.would get an occasional toot. This was the culprit.
Just changed the clock spring on my 2016 f150. Your video made it super easy. I was not able to use a cleaning rod for releasing the airbag because the hole was too small. I had to use a smaller diameter rod. Other than that, it was so easy. I wish I had done this three years ago.
This was awesome, no stupid intro just what I needed without the fluff….THANK YOU. It worked perfectly, got the clock spring online from Village ford or something like that since it was $75-100 cheaper than my local dealer.
Thanks for saving me a pile of money on this DIY repair. Great video. Only tricky part for me was I couldn’t figure out how to disconnect the horn wire and didn’t want to break the connector so I just left it plugged in and it was no problem. Thanks again!
@@HeartlandRebuilds Drove my truck the first time since replacing the clockspring and the left hand controls are mostly still wonky. One minute they work, the next minute they dont - the screen doesnt move in the direction of the arrow being pushed, and the "OK" button doesn't always respond much like they were before I installed the new clockspring. Any chance I didn't get the wire plug connectors lined up correctly or does this sound like something else? Easy enough to take back apart and check but thought I'd ask your opinion first. If it matters, the radio controls on the RH side work perfectly, but they worked fine with the original clockspring as well. Any ideas? Thanks!
@@JeffMcCoy-w1x Check the wiring harness on the back side of the steering column is plugged in all the way too. Otherwise it could be the buttons on the front going bad.
Went back and unplugged my connections from the clockspring install and blew them out with compressed air and plugged them back in firmly and now my steering wheel buttons work PERFECTLY. Must not have been making good contact somewhere. Thanks again for posting this video and for all your help!
Very straight forward. Buttons have been hit and miss on the menu system for awhile, now the cruise buttons went crazy today. Time to bite the bullet. Thank you for posting this. 2nd vehicle to do this. Chevy Silverado first and now my F150
Thank you for this! Super helpful. One thing to note for others is that there are different models of clocksprings. Oreilly's sold me the only type they had which was the incorrect one. They do vary if you have a heated steering wheel or not. I ended up having to purchase one online since no local stores had the correct version for the heated steering wheel. Part HL3T-14A664-A is non-heated and part HL3T-14A664-B is for heated.
Thanks for the video. I have the same issue but in addition to the steering wheel controls not working my wipers and signals aren’t working. Would the clock spring contribute to that too? I’ve already replaced the Multi-Function Switch and that was a bust.
Thank you so much for making this video and showing how you used a cleaning rod to disengage the lock tabs. Also, thank you for mentioning the socket sizes. Great video!!! NOTE: the 3 vertical machine screws on were 5.5 millimeter on my 2015 Lariat
nice work! This is exactly what I needed. Buttons all acting funky on my 2015... and eventually the horn started blowing non-stop on the highway...!!!! I pulled over and had to yank the fuse for it after googling the right one. Geeesh... what a mess. Thanks again, got the part, now to change it out. Also sub'd - Take Care, Clay
@@HeartlandRebuilds Update on this fix. Got it done in like 15 min. The little rods that you push on to release the Airbag/horn button were very stiff and I had to push pretty hard to make them move and release. I used a .177 Cal cleaning rod with the T handle on it. My lower little bolts were 7mm like in the video but my Torx screws holding the clock spring cassette in were T10 (not a T6 which is really small). My buttons all work AND my horn is now working properly as well.
Thanks for adding this. My 2019 horn started blowing yesterday on the highway too (apologies to all those all along the Dallas N Tollway!). After pulling over, I wasn't able to find the correct fuse quickly enough and eventually the horns died, so I drove on home. Investigating this online, I wasn't finding much of this issue regarding being stuck ON and I didn't want to go down the rabbit hole of dealing with the steering column since most issues I saw were related to it NOT working. My current situation is that all buttons on the steering work and I can hear the relay click when I press the horn which makes me think everything should be okay. Of course, it's making no sound now since the horn is dead. I think I'll pull the horn and then check the voltage to see if it toggles when I press the horn button. Maybe it's resolved itself. We've had about 8" of rain in the past few days and it's been really humid, so maybe that was the cause although I didn't drive in too much wet weather. BTW - I'm printing a copy of the fuse diagram (larger than the owner's manual) and putting it in the glove box. Suggest others do this as well. My 911 had a diagram printed on the fuse cover, but I didn't see anything like that on my truck box.
How do you know the clockspring is the problem? I am looking to install a raptor wheel on my 2015 platinum, but some of the buttons don't quite match. I was hoping to swap the individual buttons, if that is even possible - is it? If not, Perhaps I will consider using the raptor buttons even though they are marked incorrectly. Is it a button issue or definitely a clockspring issue?
Just tried to change mine and the new clock spring they sent me the small gray electrical plug at the bottom isn’t the same. But the numbers match on both clock springs.
Does the clockspring also control the turn signals? The buttons on our 2017 f-150 suddenly stopped and so did our turn signals and automatic lights. Are they all controlled by the clock spring ?
Amigo. Como se llama esa pieza. Como la pido en el dealer. O en amazon. Tengo el mismo problema en mi Ford del 2017. Pero no se como se llama esa pieza?
Yeah, you would think a button would go first, not on these trucks. You could also use a small Allen key or something like that. The cleaning rod I used was almost too big.
Amazing video! Thank you so much! Now my airbag light is on after changing the clock spring. Got a video for that by any chance? Before I take it all apart again
You may not have pressed in the airbag pigtails all the way. If you have access to a decent code scanner or Forscan, you could check what the code is before taking everything apart.
Thanks much for this, great job. More than likely my issue. Just bought a 2016 XLT with 134k on it. I'm sure the buttons could all use a replacement as well, but not sure how much extra involved that gets.
just the vid i needed, thanks. just left the store and steering wheel was a little tight when turning and heard a couple of pops and bam buttons or horn not working along with airbag light on dash. time to order a new clock spring
I have a 2016 F150 and I have a complete failure of all buttons on the steering wheel and the turn signal. The only function that works that is controllable in the steering column is if you turn the wipers to high, the wipers still work. Replaced the clock spring using your great instructions and there was no improvement. What is the next thing to try?
@@sanbelaez I finally fixed the problem. This video was very helpful in removing the steering wheel and getting access to the Clock Spring and Steering Column Control Module. After replacing the Clock Spring the problem did not go away so I replaced the SCCM which did resolve the issue. The unfortunate thing is the Clock Spring is $200 and the SCCM which includes the Clock Spring is $350 so I wish I woul dhave just replaced the SCCM at the beginning.
@@bobjamison1889 Hi, depends on the F-150 you could buy the clock spring and the windshield wiper switch separately I did that on my F-150 2011 and problem solved! Instead of buy SCCM
awesome video,,,make sure u use a thin rod for removal,,if you use something thicker it will scrape some of the plastic and will wedge in there making hard to push clip,,,happend to me,,lol,,,,tnx for video,,
Thanks for the video, I only changed the steering wheel, I disconnected the battery as well, but when I connected it again the air bag signal stayed on, what can I do, thanks
You don't have to clear any codes doing this. If you didn't have a light before, then you may not have got the airbag wires plugged in all the way and the lock clips pressed in all the way. Check those first.
It has a hexagon shape so it isn't splined like the old shafts would have been. Mine was also factory marked with blue on the top to make it easier to see. If you pause at 1:53 you can see that blue paint mark.
There’s no need to pull any fuses for the air bag, correct? Just unplugging the battery will take care of that? Just ordered mine and will be replacing it when it arrives. Thanks for the video.
If it wasn't on before, make sure the airbag connectors are plugged in all the way. You may need to get a code scanner to see what is causing the airbag light.
Thank you for this video! I just changed mine and everything works now! The thing I did notice is that when I tried to out it in drive it was a bit hard and stiff, when I tried it to out it in M, 2 and 1 it was a bit hard. I had to put it back P and mess with it so now D goes in smooth so I’m guessing cause it’s the new clock spring right?
That might be. Mine doesn't have a column shifter. There's a separate tab that locks the steering column when it's in park. If there's pressure against it when moving from park that may be your problem.
Nope, just unplug and swap it over. Nothing else to do. Just make sure your steering wheel is straight before you take it off and don't spin the wheel/clockspring.
How do you determine it's the clock spring at fault versus the button packs? A friend of mine was told by Ford to replace the button packs at $1600 which I figured we could do ourselves, but, they didn't mention the clock spring
On mine, the buttons would work sometimes, and depending on if the wheel was moved they wouldn't work at all, or the buttons would do the wrong things. The first few years of this generation F150 had a lot of clockspring problems, enough so even Ford lists it as a common problem when searching their parts website. I would replace the clockspring before the buttons.
I have a 2017 f150 and when I increase my radio volume, it changes the station or AM / Fm Bands. When I use the left side buttons it is not working properly ....
My truck has the air bag light on, the mechanic told me that the scanner tells him that the problem is in the steering wheel bag. Could this be the part that I need to change or that you recommend? When this part is changed do they have to reprogram it with the scanner?
You don't have to reprogram anything when replacing the clockspring. You should only have an airbag light with the steering wheel airbag if it was deployed or not hooked up anymore. The airbag also hooks up to the clockspring, so if that isn't working anymore than it could also cause an airbag light.
The radio memory volume buttons on the right side do not work on the steering wheel. The buttons on the left side do work. And the airbag light is on, I think I think that if it is on because of that damaged part, do you think?@@HeartlandRebuilds
Cruise control randomly deactivates itself. Can’t consistently get cruise control buttons to work. Hoping its the clock spring and nothing more. Thoughts?
The turn signal stalk is separate from the clockspring. If you suddenly have problems with buttons and turn signal, start looking into a fuse or the steering column control module.
I ordered mine from Tascaparts. My part number was HL3Z-14A664-B. They can check your VIN to make sure it's the same. It depends on steering wheel options, power tilt, heated wheel, etc.
I replaced mine after replacing the clock spring and nothing,,,, still not working. Am I missing something?? I took it apart again and still nothing working on steering wheel. Ford said maybe have to reprogram the computer to recognize the new clock spring. What y'all think??
There are two different clock springs. One for manual tilt steering wheel and one for motorized. Orileys and Autozone only carry manual version for 100 bucks. Dealership motorized is 250. Hope this helps
@@HeartlandRebuilds I can confirm the clock spring fixed my 2018 Lariat. Thanks for posting this video. I had a mechanic do it , but was nice to go in knowing exactly what was wrong.
@@jamesr5735 i did take it in, and ofc for four days they can't get it to do it, so i insist on them changing the clock spring or the tech drive it home. so they changed the clock spring after i refused to take the truck back. it was the issue and its worked since
I wonder what goes bad i thought i spilled coffee on my button and thats why they started acting funny. Now i know why when I sprayed contact cleaner behind butttons it didnt do anything.
Coffee probably didn't help anything. The wiring in the clockspring fatigues and breaks intermittently. Sometimes it'll come back and work depending on how tight the wiring is when turning.
