DIY- How to Replace Valve Cover Gasket on a 2.5L Engine found on Mazda 3, 6 and CX-5
Do you have a leak that is going down the engine side, or it’s showing up in the bottom cover when you go to change your oil or see it on the sides of the engine when the top cover is removed? This leak is most likely due to the Valve Cover and Oil Pressure Regulator gasket haven shrunk over time and now letting oil by.
This video will show you how you can do this on your own and how simple it is.
This applies to 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which can be found in 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5.
Parts used were Mazda OEM Parts.
Oil Pressure Regulator Gasket PY01-10-235
Engine Valve Cover Washer Seal PE01-10-2D5
Equivalent Alternative Non-Mazda parts for:
Engine Valve Cover Washer Seal amzn.to/3rv7xJy
Grey RTV amzn.to/3x2eyTp
If you are doing this fix, you must be at 100k miles or close to it. Then there might be other items that you should be checking right now as well:
-make sure water pump is not leaking
-belt tensioner
-check belts
-if you are at 100k...might want to change coolant and brake fluid too.
Please check out the other videos in the Mazda 6 Playlist: • Mazda 6

Thanks you. Went to trade in my Mazda 6 today and Mr manager said I had a blown head gasket upon accesment and wanted 6k off value to go to auction. Well... nice try. Only cost me 135$ to fix.

Head gasket or valve cover gasket? Two completely different things. And the repair for a blown head gasket costs way more than replacing a valve cover gasket.
@jasontodd5206

Umm, yeah. 6k sounds like blown head gasket, not leaking valve cover gasket. Hope that car got properly fixed.
@Trudeau-is-Stalin
@Trudeau-is-Stalin 3 месяца назад
@jasontodd5206 no it was a valve cover. This video is the exact issue he pointed at. A blown head gasket is obvious to diagnose.

fyi: use RTV around the rubber gasket for the oil control valve. even a new round rubber gasket won't stop it from leaking through.

@cyclist_guy-zg1zo
@cyclist_guy-zg1zo Год назад
A kitchen scrub pad will most probably scratch the aluminum cylinder head, creating a potential leak passage. Use a plastic razor blade (not metal) to clean off RTV. A rag soaked with brake cleaner is recommended for cleaning off any remaining residue and oil. Also be sure to clean the channel where the gasket fits in the valve cover, the hole for the VVT gasket and the VVT solenoid itself.

I just did this yesterday, the oil control valve gasket seated just fine without having to use a socket and hammer. Some recommend to put gasket maker on the outside of the OCV gasket or else the leak will come back within months. I used Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker (51813) instead of Mazda's overpriced RTV, reason being is RTV can cure in your head and clog oil passages if you use too much, whereas AGM will stay liquid outside of mating surfaces.
@footprintsinconc
@footprintsinconc 3 года назад
thanks for sharing your experience. what do you mean by it remains liquid on mating surfaces...it too is supposed to cure otherwise it won't create a seal. this product does cure, here is what it says on their site: "Fills gaps up to .015″ and cures to a solvent-resistant seal that will not tear or decay during service. Parts disassemble easily even after extended service. Old gasket material can be removed in minutes with a simple putty knife."
@williamfoster4268
@williamfoster4268 3 года назад
@@footprintsinconc Outside of the part being sealed it will stay liquid, as in it only seals where the gasket meets the head and you don't have to worry about the excess. The factory RTV on my head was just about touching the timing chain because they put so much on it.
@footprintsinconc
@footprintsinconc 3 года назад
interesting, i had no idea. i would assume that it would dry up. so if you were to squirt some out on a piece piece of card board and leave it, it won't cure?
@williamfoster4268
@williamfoster4268 3 года назад
@@footprintsinconc Correct, it would not cure. Any of the excess that was pushed out when I put on the new valve cover gasket is still "liquid" and can be wiped away. This consistency is slightly less than RTV. So far I have used this on my Bandit 600 valve cover and my Mazda 3 valve cover.

The gasket is made of rubber not silicone so it shrinks with heat over time. Built in maintenance scheduling and it will fail as well as the vacuum pump seals
@footprintsinconc

they are made out of rubber, and yes it does shrink over time. the quality of these i'm sure can be improved so that they don't leak this quickly...

I have a 2016 Mazda 3 and there was Trans oil put inside with the engine oil. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Now there’s smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes and the oil has been changed along with the spark plugs but it still smokes like a chimney and when accelerated beyond 40MPH, you heat a running noise and it slows down and smokes again. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ Idk what’s wrong because there’s no codes when I got it checked! My poor baby. 🤦🏾‍♀️

I think you put too much rtv in those select spots. It does not take very much. It squeezes out, especially if you torque it all down right away. I usually finger tighten all the bolts and let it sit overnight and then torque it all down. But good video
@poke2748
@poke2748 Год назад
You used way too much silicone in places you didn't even need it. You simply need a dab where the timing cover and the head meet as well as a small dab at the base of the rounded surface not on top. Other than that you did a good job.

I have a 2018 cx5 53k miles that has a few drips under the heat seal so I can't see where the leak comes from, could this be the valve cover gasket? Looking at the video, it seems like if the problem is the valve cover gasket, one would be able to see the leak from the top of the engine.

i'd get a mech to check the car out....every mechanic shop does that for your peace of mind before buying the car just becuase it had the gasket replaced, it doesn't mean the car is bad...one less thing for you to fix when you get. i'd take it into a mech and pay $100 or $200 to get the car inspected

Great vid. All of yours are well done. Question, how critical do you think it is to replace the Engine Valve Cover Washer Seal if there is no sign of leaking? I was thinking of just doing the gasket.
@footprintsinconc
@footprintsinconc 2 года назад
Thank you! To clarify what you are asking....I assume that the "engine valve cover gasket" is leaking, so you are going to replace it. While doing so, what you are asking is, is it necessary to replace the "engine control valve gasket"? If yes, then I would replace it now as the only way to access it when it leaks is to remove the valve cover....too much work to save $15 or $20. Now if your "engine valve cover gasket" is not leaking, then you don't need to do this repair at all. I would not do this whole job if there are no oil leaks. let me know if I've clarified your question. Please help me out with the RU-vid algorithms by liking and sharing and subscribing! Thx.
