My attempt at tiling a kitchen backsplash using basic tools.
Please note that I am NOT a professional tiler and this is not meant to be a tutorial - just a short DIY video documenting my attempt at this project. There may well be better ways of doing this.
The point of this video is to demonstrate what can be achieved by someone with reasonable DIY skills, a few basic tools and a 'can-do attitude'.
DIY cost of project: @ £170

I've started having a go at tiling my newly upgraded window sill in my kitchen behind the sink, so I decided I would cut all the tiles which needed cutting first and then lay them out on the flat top together with the whole ones without adhesive to start with just to see how they would fit together before spreading out the sticky stuff as I didn't want to waste it if they didn't fit. So then I set about cutting those which needed to be and I soon found that the manual tile cutter I had bought only broke more tiles than it cut properly, it's ok if you just want to cut one near halfway across but forget it if you need to cut one a bit nearer an edge, so I got an old motorised tile cutter from the local flea market and it's BRILLIANT! It cuts little bits off tiles with ease and it even cuts them diagonally too, and it cuts them L shaped. And I also found that a tile file, something which seems to be disappearing now here in England, just try finding one anywhere, is a really essential little tool for trimming off rough edges from the tiles in a easily controllable way, much less aggressive than an electric sander, but each to their own... I also found making templates from cardboard helped quite a bit too, especially for the tiles which had to be cut diagonally.

This was very helpful to watch. Thank you very much. I wanted to try and do this in my kitchen and bathroom but got worried because I wasn't sure you could tile straight onto bare walls. I thought I had to put up plasterboard, and that put me off tbh.👏 🇬🇧

Hiya Chrissy. A bare wall like this is absolutely one of the best surfaces for tiling. Go for it and enjoy. ATB, Des

I wonder if Siddy Holloway has watched this as she so loves tiles as anyone who's ever watched "secrets of the london underground" will know.

I see you are using a notched trowel. What angle do you hold the trowel against the wall ? if, for examp,e the trowel was at 90 degrees, the adhesive would be 5mm thick (if notch 5mm) but as the angle decreases the thickness of the adhesive will also decrease.

Hi there and thanks for dropping by. It's a bit difficult to say really and depends on surface and what type of tiles are being used. For wall tiles on a flat wall it's less than 45 - could be nearly half that at a guess. If wall is uneven it will be more to flatten it out. On a bigger tile the angle could be greater as you may need a bit more adhesive for a heavier object. In any event, I'd say less than 45 degrees unless its a really rough wall ad you need plenty on there to flatten it out. Not sure whether this helps. Take care, Des

I hope you knocked off the power to those sockets before opening them...I know it should be obvious, but it's easily forgotten.

very informative video..I wouldnt get too caught up in "proffesionals" my experience of them is they will do the quickest job they can the way that benefits them most ...if you take time and care in your work you can usually do as good a job (if not better).. Shame about having to listen to Barry Manilow!
