Part 2.
My attempt at tiling a kitchen backsplash using basic tools.
Please note that I am NOT a professional tiler and this is not meant to be a tutorial - just a short DIY video documenting my attempt at this project. There may well be better ways of doing this.
The point of this video is to demonstrate what can be achieved by someone with reasonable DIY skills, a few basic tools and a 'can-do attitude'.
DIY cost of project: @ £170

at 6.56 if you look a the bottom left front of the window, you have 2 half tiles togather, which means the tile should have been a full tile cut around the corner and the front row of the window bottom, is not following the brick type pattern,

Hiya buddy. That's very true. I did actually notice it about a week afterwards. Can't believe I didn't see it at the time. Good spot! Take care, Des

Great video. I find taking the sockets off the wall makes the job of going around them a lot easier. I also place the cables into block connectors for safety and put the electric back on and then just avoid the back box screw holes. Your method is interesting but wouldn't be my preferred. From my center line, I usually start from the bottom left hand side and lay about 6 to 7 tiles at the bottom and go up and across, building from the bottom as I work my way across to the right. I also don't put spacers in until I have a good load of tiles on wall(maybe 20), with the exception of the bottom row, otherwise you will be there all day.

Thank you for your valuable feedback which is very much appreciated. This is a DIY video and I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'm actually looking forward to doing some more tiling soon and may well try your approach. Thanks for taking the time to write. Best wishes, Des

Superb work! I’m really struggling with tiling at the moment, had to rip off the tiles I had put up before they set as I was struggling to cut round the sockets

Thank you. If you've only got basic tools this can be very tricky and time consuming. You need a lot of patience and a cool head if you're using nippers to slowly chip away at the tiles. Many mon ths ago I bought a Dremel knockoff with an array of cutting wheels. I will be trying them next time. I think they'll be far better and much quicker. Thank you so much for dropping by. Des

+Garry G Hi there Garry. Thanks for watching mate. Rather time consuming with basic tools but very satisfying when done, especially when you know you've done it on the cheap. Take care buddy

Hi any tips for doing the sink slashback if the windowsill isn't level?

Did you find the centre line between the walls either sides of the window?

Great video. What is the name of the bit that goes on the window seal at 6.57 into the video? Also, whereabouts did you buy your cutters and tiles from?

Hi there. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. It's called a tile trim - different sizes and lengths for different thickness of tiles and length of runs. You can get them anywhere mate. The cutters? Any tiling shop.The tiles? Sorry can't remember but once agin this style is quite popular and you Ii think they're quite readily available. Best wishes, Des

Behind the sink, would you use green board for the wall where the backsplash tile goes down to the countertop surface? If so, how high?
@21stcenturycaveman33
@21stcenturycaveman33 4 года назад
Hiya buddy. Not necessary my friend. You can tile straight on to the plaster. You just need to make sure it's sealed beforehand and you need to use waterproof grout. That's it. ATB, Des

Shouldn't there be a grout gap just under the trim?
@21stcenturycaveman33
@21stcenturycaveman33 Год назад
Hi there. You can grout but I prefer using a sealant as it is more flexible and won't crack like grout. This is especially important if you have a wooden floor as there will be movement and grout will crack. ATB, Des

@@21stcenturycaveman33 You're right there, the grout's ok in between the tiles but between them and anything else you need something a bit more flexible like a low modulus silicone sealant. And I'm about to fit tiles on a wall at the back of an old 80's sit on top stainless steel sink where it meets the bricks so I intend to use some sealant in between the tiles and the edge of the sink, and also on top of the sill where the tiles meet the window frame. And I'm making a small gap in between the wall tiles and the bottom of the trim which I think I'll also seal with the silicone, and I think I'll also stick the trim down with the sealant too which should give me some time to make any necessary adjustments to it as I fit the tiles up to it.
