I've been using SpiderWire 50lb EZ Braid fishing line with good results. It sticks to itself like sinew when pulled tight. It makes nice thin white borders when pulled tight and you can wrap without pulling for no border. Also, its thin enough that i can stitch tie with it. And it is 7 bucks for 110 yards so it's cheap too!

You should try Spider-Wire Fusion. It has a wax coating where it doesn’t let dye through like some of the braided kinds. Get the highest pound test and I think it’s better than leather or kite string, because you only use one kind of line for the whole tight or loose knots. So awesome to see people come together and share what they have learned, thank you Mr Tye Dye for bringing us together and share are secrets that we use to keep many decades ago.

@@moephishh2o863 could you direct me where to be able to get the specific "fusion" spider-wire? I searched online, for it but it didn't turn up. Many other varieties, but not the "fusion". Thanks in advance! Be well~✌

happiRNhippi : It is discontinued I believe. I purchased 300 yards from a person on eBay for 50$$. Your right it’s not in the store it seems anymore. You can try the Spiderwire braided kind, or sinew works. High strength braid spiderwire might work, but I always used fusion, because it’s coated. Braided might have holes in the line where dye can get through. There’s always sinew!!

If there is a way to mess it up, I will find it for sure!! Check this one out, so I went to Ace to buy the kite string, and realized that I already own a huge spool of string that looks just like that kite string. Same thickness and it looks like the same material too, so I decided to just use what I already have instead. Well, it's not the same string!! My string acts like a wick and transfers the dye to spots of the shirt that I haven't dyed yet! When I first saw You tying with string, I actually thought about this and wondered why this same thing wasn't happening to You. But after that, I never gave it any thought again! What really sucks is that I still have about a dozen shirts already tied up with that same string, ready for dye! I just just started working with string, and I absolutely love it! I will definitely be using it for most of my future tying! I just certainly need to get back over to Ace and purchase the good stuff! Live and learn I guess! Do You know why the dye doesn't penetrate the Ace kite string, is it coated with something or is it just the type of material it's made from? Thanks Bro!
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 года назад
mine does that sometimes also, but it is a poly based string of some sort so that may not let it wick too much .... I am glad to be of help.... have fun!!

@@MrTieDye Thanks Bro! Ya the string I used is linen, and now that I think about it, when I bought it many years ago for leathercraft, I purposely bought this particular string because I needed to have different colors, and this string is actually meant to take on dye! Stupid Me didn't think this one through!! But, on those dozen shirts that I have already tied up, I have been wetting the strings with soda ash water. The dye doesn't seem to migrate nearly as bad this way! Thanks for Your time always Bro!

Thanks for sharing!! I just tried my first batch of tie dying yesterday! I used, like... hmm... it's kind of like jewelry making string, it came with some wind chimes that I got for a windchime project of mine lol. Sort of like floss, I guess. I'm not sure if it will come out more in the style of sinew or kite string, but I can't wait to find out!! Anyway I used rubber bands and simple spirals or scrunches for the rest of my shirts. I'm just an amateur experimenting for personal use :) Thanks again for sharing :)

Mr Tye Dye, moephishH2O here and I’ve been Tye Dying for approximately 25 years or more. I’ve learned a lot in my Tye Dye adventures and have used leather and kite string. Today I use Fusion Spider-wire, it’s high test fishing line with a rubber coating. I think it’s the strongest filament or line out on the market for Tye dyes. It can be used as kite string or high test strength pulling it tight. I think it makes crisper cleaner lines and it’s easier to work with in my opinion. Not to mention you can make it tighter than leather or use it like kite string too. I wrap it around a lighter and pull it tight. I’ve had great luck with it and was wondering if you ever used it or if you like to try it. It’s at Walmart in the fishing line section and you have to get the Fusion and not braided, because braided has holes where dye can get through. The Fusion has a wax coating and it’s thinner and stronger than leather line. Let me know what you think, I’ve got many great ideas about Tye Dyes. I’m actually making some now for my job and employees I work with. Would be awesome to talk or chat on line if you have time. You are a legend in the Tye Dye Arts and I would enjoy sharing my style to benefit the educational world of Tye Dye Art. Keep up the positive energy and educating people who want to learn, it’s very impressive and inspirational.

My kite string is kind of slippery and hard to tie easily. I found it easier to make a slip knot by using a crochet hook. For those who crochet, it's just the same as using the "wrap thread, single crochet, yarn over,, single crochet" way of attaching the crochet thread to your hook before you make your first real stitch. Once I have a slip knot on the hook, I draw the hook up to open the loop, and remove my hook and start tying my shirt. I use the rubber bands then in place of a fabric marker to define my pie slices for spirals. Then I have no worries about some rogue fabric marker that doesn't wash out well
@MrTieDye

Awesome, I am glad you found a way to make it work and to explain it in case others are having the same troubles... thank you!! Oh and for the rogue markers.... that is why I work on the inside of the tee 😉✌🏻

@MrTieDye

yes that wold work also... I have used many things to tie with .... so mostly I use Kite String from Ace Hardware. I have also used Embroidery String (it was not quite as strong as the kite string) And dental floss works great, I used the flat kind that was cheapest. ALSO >>> I just heard about Red Heart® Classic Crochet Thread, Size 10, from another Rainbow Warrior, so I will be going to find some of this soon and try it out, but they said it worked great. But if you have nano cord, I say go for it

yeah that is an issue I am not sure how to get around... for me, I just do not tie the very center as tight, as the pulling stretches the cotton or I scrunch it instead of the pleating ... you may ask some other dyers as I have seen some detail work, but I to end up with a pucker ✌🏻

I just used kite string for the first time. Definitely will take some getting used to. I have a question tho, mine soaked in the colours and made them bleed to areas i didnt want it to...have you every had this problem? And if so, how do i fix that?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Год назад
Yeah I like the kite string for how easy it works with tying, but there is the dye that travels along the string ... I have not solved this ... but what I do to cut down on this is when I add dye, I try to avoid the kite string where I can and if I see some drop on the string, I will push on the string so it touches the tee, this will soak up most of the dye that is trying to spread ... but when I was using rubber bands, I had many times where the dye splashed upon hitting a band and went everywhere ... so it is a matter of finding what works best for you or is the least annoying ✌🏻

I am having trouble with the kite string. I start with a loop and pull it tight. Then I keep going with the string, the new wrap makes the previous wraps loose. I do not tighten the string as much as I do with sinew. I must keep going back and tightening the previous loops but that is time consuming and a pain in the @$$. I am practicing but have not found the right tension to keep everything tight. How do you keep the string tight? Thanks for all your tutorials.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Год назад
yeah working with the kite string at first can be a bit tricky... but the more you work with it, you will find the tightness you like... I do the first few wraps a little bit loose just to get it started.... then it is a matter of wrapping your string and finding th tightness you like, and then being consistent with it ... but if the first wraps loosen up a bit as I tighten things, I just ignore them ... keep at it and it will click in for you and you are welcome... I love to help others have fun and success with this art ✌🏻🙏💚

When using kite string on the first time you wrap it around how do you keep it from sliding around on you? And then on the sinew how do you make a slipknot I'm not very good with knots
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 года назад
for the kite string, I just leave a long tail so I can pinch it with my thumb or finger if needed as I wrap it around the second time and for a slip knot, I do a simple one, I make a loop with the sinew, then take the long end that is attached to the roll and wrap it around the loop one time and then I push that piece through the loop which forms a new loop, this is the one you are going to use, the first loop you made will not tighten around your loop by pulling on the short end of the sinew and there you have a slip knot where the long end is pulled to tighten it .... I plan to make a series of tips and tricks videos and this will be one of them 😉✌🏻

Hey MrTieDye i had a question do you think certain colors look better together than others and how do i decide which colors should be on the same T?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 6 лет назад
I love all colors and have fun mixing different ones... sometimes I go for the rainbow, and you can change that up a bit by using either lite or dark shades, or combine them also I love to work with colors that mix and blend well so I can layer them... so I will use a few shades of blue or fire colors .... but I lay down the lightest color first and then start adding darker shades over top another thing I like to do is have contrasting colors on one tee.... so purple and yellow or orange .... makes a bold statement sometimes I just start dyeing and grabbing colors without any plan at all ....... or I will see a color combo out in the world whether it is an advertisement, a shirt or dress in a store and then I make a note and try it with tie-dye .... so I get inspiration for color combos in all sorts of ways
