I have had mine around, after mixing with water, for 2-3 weeks (with an average room temp of 70F here in Oregon). and still got decent colors ... the Dyes do not just 'die' one day, they just slowly give lighter colors, then more muted colors .... BUT, if you have a mini fridge to store them in, they will last even longer... I have used dyes stored in a fridge at 45F 2 months after they were mixed and still had decent colors but let it be known that mixing dyes fresh will give the best colors... but the ones that have been mixed for a while still look good ... sometimes when I have a lot of older dyes, I will use them in conjunction with newly mixed dyes as I love contrast ... I hope this helps ✌️
I have done a little bit ... and I just used a brush and brushed the dye on and it soaked right into the leather ... but that's all I did ... it seems to stay just fine ... I have also dyed some wood and it soaked in to the grain nicely
First of all love your work an have been very inspired by what you do, I have learned so much.. Alas I still have questions, lol....Im curious if you can resoak a shirt already dyed in soda ash water ? Will it mess up the water or the shirt ? Wondering for twice dyeing reasons? Or should i just put soda ash in the dye?
Thank you and you are welcome ... as for an already dyed tee... yes I soak them in soda ash if I want to add more dye to them ... I usually use a separate wash bin for it and pour in just enough to soak the tee/item as some dye does leach out of the dyed tee and I did not want to color my whole batch of soda ash ... I do not add soda ash to my dye (except when doing ice dye or HWI, then I am just adding it to the powder) because as soon as you mix soda ash, dye powder and water, the dye is active and should be used right away (like the One-Step kits you buy for the store)
Did you say you soaked them in soda ash again after rinsing the dye? Or is that soap? Thanks I just couldn't tell if you said soda ash or something else.
After the rinsing, I add a little bit of Synthrapol soap to help wash and remove the rest of the un-bonded dyes ... Blue Dawn Dish soap can also be used as it to is a pH neutral soap ✌️
I enjoyed watching your lessons. This lesson for the 4th of July is what I was looking for. I couldn't find a patriotic shirt for myself. I can make my own now.😊
You did a great job with the lesson. I learn so much, my brain is in over load. But that’s great for me. How long can you keep the dyes in the bottles?
Thank you ... as for the dyes, these are Procion Dyes and after they are mixed, I have had them around at room temp 65-70F here in Oregon) for a couple weeks and still got decent colors when I used them again ... BUT, if you have a mini fridge to store them in they will last for a couple months and still give decent colors ... Side Note .... some of the One Step Kits, there is dye and soda ash mixed together to avoid the pre soak, those dyes should be mixed right before you use them
I use Gildan Ultra tees, but the main thing is to find 100% cotton tees and there are so many options... I picked this brand years ago and stuck with it
Sent you $5 via PayPal and hopefully you received it. I am a very visual learner and one of those that got confused with your white shirt demonstration. Thank you for this great tutorial! Greetings from this 74 year young great grandmother that is just starting this tie dye journey with your help!
When I was a kid I used to tie dye-- one of those silly kits your parents buy you for a birthday party. I loved the process. THIS feels like the real deal. Didn't even know what soda ash was before this video! Seems like more supplies than I expected but the results seem oh so worth it. In a few paychecks I'll have some shopping to do! Thank you so much Mr. Tie Dye!
You are welcome and yes there is a little more involved than a kit, BUT, you are right, the results are so worth it ... have fun and ask questions if you need to and I or others will help where we can ✌️
Yes I know what you mean... I cringed the first couple of times.... after that it was fun to see the face of someone watching as I took black dye and squirted all over a beautiful rainbow colored tee or dress ... during the rinse out you will see some color and then after the first wash, you will see more color... Breathe 🧘 ✌️
I've been tie dying for several years now and using ridiculously hard iron water-the kind that turns whites tan after a couple washes. I'm no expert, just something to do with the grandkids. The water hasn't given me any grief and I've noticed that the soda ash will even clear that nasty water!
that is good to hear ... I have heard from other dyers about hard water from their well messing with the dye results... but if it is working for you that is great!! and yes, fun to have activity to do with the kids ✌️
An awesome activity to do with the grand kids! During the year-long research and development process, I tested the Kits with grandparents and kids and it gave me so much joy seeing how happy they made everyone!
Carl!! So great to see you!! And, a new video from you ✌️❤️☀️😂 You always inspire me…and these beanbags are darling! Love to you and your family from sticky Florida ✌️❤️🎨🌎🌈
Thank you sooooo much for all this Spiders! Can we have a tutorial for the T that you are wearing at the end of the videos when you reveal the shirts please? Is a really peace of ART! Is the one with a lots of white geode spirals.... :-D Thank you very much. Peace Love
You are welcome, I am glad to be of help with these videos.... BUT, as for the tee I was wearing at the end of the video, that one was a gift from Creative Hippies LLC over on IG ... he learned some tips and tricks of tie-dye from me and wanted to thank me for the videos... here is a better photo of the tee over on IG : instagram.com/p/CQrZBsIMjq8/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Super fun! They look AWESOME!!! You’re the guru of tie-dyeing. I’d love to make one of these. Great unboxing video, Carl. Thank you. 😁 Hey Monica, contact me too. 😊♥️🌈
yes you can, make sure they get wrapped really tight... also, it will help keep the white if when you get ready to dye the tee, add some plain water to the banded area... if it is wet with plain water, there is less of a chance of the dye soaking in there... also, do not add dye directly over the lightening bolt area ✌️ .... I do it with the sinew, but the sinew is pulled much tighter than you can get the bands on there 😉 Have fun and I wish you success!! Also, since you said you were new, here is my Beginner Playlist ... it has some helpful videos for those just starting out : ru-vid.com/group/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo&si=NouxftjxZMYZrrut
Thank you so much for that! I have a commission that has a printed triangle of water in the center of the shirt. I have been struggling to get a crisp corner. ❤
@shawndelaney34470 ... yes I do ... BUT, one thing to take note of .... Some washers spray water at the beginning of a spin cycle, so check that as that water can dilute the soda ash that you just soaked your tee in ... if your washer does spray water, set it to about halfway through the cycle ✌️
this video was just about how I thicken the water to make thick dyes ... the results are shown in my other videos where I do 'Image' dyes and outline them with thick black dye... here is a list of videos that will show the results of my thick dyes, just check the ones with a thin black outline : ru-vid.com/group/PLMEtBqB2Bzupjyl1-JBNYcPO9dSDNDHD0
