Beautiful job! Thank you for including your mistakes, which are easy to make in our excitement. Love your cats too, especially the one at the start, licking his lips at the tasty fishies!
Beautiful pond! I've got a few container ponds on my balcony with Medaka too. Glad to see you changed from hot glue to epoxy, hot glue breaks down and releases toxins apparently so epoxy or pure silicone are best.
@@jt.633 I bought the plant (swamp pepper) from aquatic plant section. The other one which I got from my backyard was weed. But I found it growing in the pond, so I just guessed it should be ok in the water, and it was ok 👍 actually you can try many different plants. If you don’t immerse whole pot, some types of mint grow, pothos can be ok too 😊
Hello Friend! I'm from Brazil and I really liked your planted mini pond. It was wonderful, because you are very talented and creative. I am also setting up a mini planted pond of approximately 1300 liters, here in Brazil, where I will put some fish. I will follow you and I subscribed to your channel. Cheers and bring us more movies, ok?!
Thank youuu❣️I love creative things. My next video may not be so soon (sorry, I am a slow creator...) but I definitely want to make more videos. Wow your pond is a big pond. It sounds so exciting. Love to see it!
I love the baby nursery idea. I would have never thought of it myself. I'm waiting for my rice fish to be delivered as I write this. I can't wait to put them in my pond. Please update us on your pond soon.
My baby fish grew up now. I ended up moving them to a bigger bowl. As hey grew, they needed more space but they were still not big enough to be back in the pond. Thank you so much for your comment, I will make another video as soon as I can.
I cleaned the pond and changed water regularly, but the frequency depends on the season. If it’s summer, I change water more often than cold season. You seldom need to change water in winter. I received a comment from Japan on this video. She said that if I can place akadama soil in the pond, I don’t need to change water. Actually I looked for it, but couldn’t find it here. I don’t know where you live, but if you can find it, it may help to reduce your work.
I found your channel today and it's a true blessing. Your voice, music and images are calming and beautiful. I would love to share more of your garden. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏 This pond’s dimension is 45cm diameter, 38cm height, 60L capacity. Actually, I set up a new pond which is bigger than this video’s. I found the new bigger pond was easier to look after the fish. If you are interested in my new pond, you can check this video link (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--VuSHOJeZnc.html) The new pond size is 60cm diameter, 30cm height, 85L capacity.
I have orange Medaka in a ceramic fish bowl on my patio. I have lots of duckweed to shade them from the hot FLORIDA sun. My bowl holds about 8 gallons and sits on a heavy duty rolling platform so I can put them in the shade. I found some tiny tadpoles in another pot and brought them inside to a small water terarrium. I took some water from my Medaka bowl to add to my tadpoles and found two Medaka fry!!! I’m so thrilled. Time to set up another Medaka bowl. Your suggestions about a nursery for the fry and shade are very helpful. Thank you for a very informative post.
Wow I'd love to see your patio ponds❤️ I can see how exciting to see the media fry! What I learnt from looking after the little fry, when they are younger than 2 weeks old, they normaly can't eat fish food even if you grind it to powder. In Japan, people feed plant planktons (Paramecium) to medals fry, but I couldn't find anyone sells them here. I tried to catch and grow them by myself but I failed. So I decided to keep the very young baby fish in green water in a bucket (water colour should be just light yellow green that I can still see the bottom of the bucket). Green water contains nutrition like planktons or bacteria so medals fry can feed themselves. After two weeks, they start being able to eat powder food. I found it's easier to look after little fish if I separate them from adult fish, and put the fry in a relatively large container like a bucket (my one is 15L size). I made green water by putting about 5 adult medals fish for 4-5 days in a bucket water, and move them back to the pond (time depends on the weather, size of fish, size of the bucket )In that way, the bucket water turned green. I didn't look after the fry, but they all survived in the green water! Now it's getting cold here, so they are slowing down the growth but they look happy. Good luck with your lovely ricefish and tadpoles 💕
@@livelovelaughdiy Wondering if hard boiled egg yolk mashed into water to create a soup would be eaten by newly hatched medaka. It works for tiny betta fish
@@emihayashi7725Thank you for sharing your experience! I think boiled egg yolk will work too. I found the info that actually some medaka farms feed boiled egg yolk to the fry 😉
the pond is so pretty and the fish are so cute! Thank you for your video- it was so informative! I have a ~50 liter planter at home and I was inspired me to make one for my backyard. My only concern was that my planter would be too deep (it is 17 inches/43 centimeters) so I was wondering what the dimensions of your pot were, for reference. love from CA!
My pot's depth is similar to yours. Rice fish don't seem to mind the depth, they can live in a deep pot as long as they have wide enough area. But if they are close to the bottom, you can't see them.
Hi! Your mini pond is beautiful! I have 4 cats and I noticed you used a cover at first, but then you didn't. Do cats get used to the pond and not bother the fish after a while?
You are spot on with your guess! I have 3 cats now, but back then I had two. Those two cats got used to the pond in the end. When I got a new one, I started using the cover again because the new cat was a curious kitten 😹 I use a bamboo shade cover when it's heavily raining.
@@liryc24 I understand, the cover doesn't look good. As my pond plants grow, they give the fish more hiding areas. I think that helped to protect them too. If your pond doesn't have much hiding area, and the colour of the fish stands out, you'd better have a cover because the cover also protect fish from birds as well (depends on where you live though).
I am curious how you clean your pond and how it maintains itself without a pump? I want to install a mini pond of my own but most videos I watch say a pump needs to be installed. Any help you can provide is very much appreciated!!
When I clean my mini pond, I use a gravel cleaner (vacuum tube) to clean the gravel and get rid of dirty water at the bottom (probably 1/3 of pond water) then scrape algae inside of the pond with sponge or scouring pad (my one has a long stick, so I don't have to put my hand in water. Also it is easier to wipe off the algae when water is not so deep). Wait for half hour+ (normally I clean other fish tank during the time), then use the gravel cleaner again to remove more dirty water. After that I add new clean water not more than old water. If it doesn't fill up the pond, I add the rest of the new water next day because I don't want to fill new water more than half at once. Regarding the pump, you can install it in your pond. But ricefish generally live in still water, and the swim against the stream. So if there is constant water stream in the pond, the fish have to fight against the stream constantly, and it exhausts them. But if there is a still area, they can avoid the stream. So you can use the pump. But I think its better to adjust the flow level low for them 😃
Than you so so much for your lovely comment from Germany. I have been to Germany long time ago and loved it so much! It took a long time (and a bit of injury...😅) to make the garden, and I think Medaka pond is the highlight of it 😉
Having aquatic plants in the pond helps to slow down the algae growth (I still have to clean the pond sometime though), also adding some shrimps is good too as they eat algae and leftover fish food.
We’ve got lots of mosquitoes here too 😩 Rice fish eat mosquito larvae, so sometimes people use them to reduce mosquitoes. But mosquito larvae can eat rice fish fry, also it is true that just having extra water outside increases mosquitoes. Whisky barrel sounds great 👍 I have seen whisky barrel style pots made of plastic at Bunnings (DIY shop), and tempted to get it so many times! Good luck 😉

I love this! My son has a half finished koi pond. Been thinking about finishing it myself as he seems to be too busy. Would love to do one of these pots on my second floor deck also. Absolutely beautiful. So peaceful 💟
I'm doing this! One question though; is the hot glue strong enough to hold water? I've always had it deteriorate from water or liquids. Might try it with silicone. I actually have a few different pots to choose from. Some with and some without drainage holes. Have you done this with any other fish? I want to get a few set up. Rice fish, American flatfish, guppies, platies, mollies, even try some female bettas outside in a protected area. I think it could be great, as I live in a similar climate to Gold Coast, but opposite hemisphere: San Diego, in Southern California🌈🌊🌞😂 - Erik
I don’t recommend to use hot glue. My pot had a peg to seal the hole, so I placed it and fixed with epoxy glue. It’s has been no leak. I haven’t try other fish, but my friend had some guppies in the similar pond, so I think guppies are ok (actually they breed a lot in the pond!). Female bettas sound nice 😊 Thank you for your lovely comment from California 🌞🌞🌞

Than you for your lovely comment ! My pot’s height is 45cm, and diameter is 40cm. Rice fish don’t need deep water, but the depth doesn’t hurt them. As long as they have plenty of area to swim around, they are happy. Your planter seems to be big enough ♪ I noticed that I can see them better if they are in the shallow pond, but they might be safer in deeper pond in terms of birds’ attack etc.
Nice one. I was actually looking for videos on this topic. Planning a “Mediterranean” version of the same idea in my garden using halved wine barrels. Thinking about putting two at different heights and an solar powered electric pump to circulate water from the bottom to the top one.
Wow! It sounds like a beautiful idea! If you are planning to put ricefish in that pond, I think it’s better to adjust the water to fall gently not to have too much stream in the pond. If there is some area where fish can avoid the current, it’s ok 👍 Also solar powered pump probably stops working during the night and can give a fish quiet sleep time😊
@@livelovelaughdiy Probably Northern Europe is too cold for ricefish… I will try with small goldfish that I can put in an aquarium indoors during winter.
@@YSLRD Thanks a lot for the tip! I think the big one where I plan to put them barely holds more than 110L. I’ll investigate alternatives. I am still waiting for the pomp I ordered and I started with the bog filter. Fish will come last when everything is ready.

The Japanese garden is amazing and the mini fish pond is perfect. Just wondering since the pond is in outdoor, could the rice fish survive during winter? Do you need to change water regularly?
Hi 😊 thank you for your comment & questions. Japanese rice fish can handle very cold water. I live in Gold Coast in Australia where the water never freezes even in the coldest day. So they are just fine. I don't know how the climate is like in winter in your area, but they can survive cold water under a thin layer of ice. Actually I've just uploaded a video about winter pond, you can check this video for the details 😉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_htZakHSvU8.html Regarding the water change, I used to change water once/ 2-3 weeks to keep it clean from algae in summer with this mini pond (you don't need any water change in winter), but I upgraded it to a bigger patio pond with more plants and substrate last year and I changed water only once a year! My fish are happy and they reproduced a lot! The natural ecosystem must have worked well in the bigger patio pond. I have the video about my new pond if you like to know how I look after my fish. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--VuSHOJeZnc.html
Hello What a beautiful pond you've created! Could you please tell me what the creeper plant on the outside of the pond is? The one that is growing up the side and along the path. Many thanks.
Thank you for your comment. The creeper plant is Callisia Repens (Creeping Inchplant). It grows very very well here. It's a type of succulent and great ground cover. There are some variations in colour. Some are pink, some are purple, or gold. My one is goldish green but backside of the leaves are purple.
I think you are right. I found the info that 2 parts epoxy is safe for fish, so i used it. I applied the epoxy bond from the bottom and sealed the hole with a plastic cap from inside where the water sits. In the end, the glue didn’t affect the pond as I didn’t loose any fish but I agree aquarium products should be suitable.
The open shaped bowl exposes water surface to the air, so air always dissolve in the water, and rice fish don’t need the pump. Yes, plants act like a filter and help to oxygenate the water too. You can install a pump if you want, but the fish don’t like strong stream, so you need to make sure to give them the area with no stream.
9:43 you know what happend to the fish if they arent there anymore :D all jokes aside we also have fish in an aquarium and our cat likes to drink the water but she doesnt harm the fishes.
I moved my ricefish to a fish tank inside last winter. But Japanese ricefish are tolerant with cold water. They can survive during the winter. They usually slow down eating when the water temperature drops. When it’s very cold, they don’t eat, don’t move much to save energy. They can survive even under ice but if it’s too cold and the whole water gets frozen, they die. Also, little fish are weaker, so they may not handle well with cold water. So we don’t normally use heater for this fish. Hope this info is helpful 😊
Hello, Thank you for your beautiful video. I also live on the Gold Coast. Do you have any Rice fish I could buy from you? I would really appreciate if you had any to buy. I have an established pond. Thank you
Thank you for your message. I am very sorry, I don’t have lots of young rice fish here, so I can’t offer my fish, and most of them are siblings that means they are not good for breeding. When I got my original fish first from a guy in Brisbane, he was looking after the fish at home. So I think the original fish may have been siblings as well, that’s why I got some of the deformed fry. But I have a friend recently bought some rice fish. I asked her where she got them from, and she gave me the website of the aquarium. She recommended to ring them to check if they have Japanese ricefish (Medaka) before you go, because they are pretty popular now and sold quickly. Just a note, Japanese ricefish are inactive in winter, people normally put them in the pond in spring in Japan 🇯🇵 😊💕 madaquariums.com.au/
I’m so happy to have come across your vid, I live on the Gold Coast too and have had many Aquariums in my time. I have never kept Japanese rice fish though, how well do they winter here? P.S I really enjoyed you sharing lessons learned as well as successes! Thanks
I’m so excited to see your comment from Gold Coast🏖 Thank you!! Rice fish can handle with cold weather. They just become inactive, and they hibernate in freezing cold Japanese winter. It doesn’t frost in winter here, so they will be happy 😊
Additional info: Adult ricefish can handle cold water, but not baby ones. If the water is colder than 15C, small fish can't make it. Small ones need to be in warm water (20C+) to grow.
Thank you for your lovely suggestions🥰 I am making a new video now. Sorry, I’m not a fast video creator (because it takes extra time for me to make the script in English 😅) I am from Japan 🇯🇵 xxx
I upgraded my pond, so I don’t have it anymore. I haven’t done any water change for my new pond. Details about my new pond → ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U_bKpDaG7S0.html When I had this old pond, I changed water probably every 2 weeks in summer and every month in cooler season. No water change required in cold season.

"Seal the bottom holes with glue gun because I've seen it on some video." HAHAHAHA That's one relatable line! I'll learn a lot from this video. Thanks!
In terms of size, the baby fish can fit in the holes, but they were often swimming near the surface so I didn't loose many. I think it would be better if you can attach a patch of fine mesh in stead of small holes.
I agree, in Australia there are strict rules about animals and plants. I will never release my fish to the nature, it would possibly change the environment.
