I have an upcoming trip that I needed to fit 4 MFC fuel cans on the Bowfin roof rack. This video was the only one I found that gave a good DYI solution for fuel can holder without costing an arm and a leg! Thanks for the video!

Great work I've been looking for something similar. I'll be making some of these now. Thanks for doing the video

Glad you enjoyed. Let me know how it works out.

It’s a smart design but maybe it’s worth adding some closed cell foam to reduce the dents surely too be made by those 4 bolts on the rack

Thanks for the comment. I ground down the bolts so the don’t protrude. They don’t hit the can at all now. If they did… I would agree with you 100%.

Nice idea and share, if I only had a drill press😢, not to pick it apart but I, too, would be hesitant to roll with fuel cans with those bolts exposed. I would either get it welded at a local shop or likely bury those bolt heads, maybe put a 2nd rail of on top covering the bolts.

Hey brotha , good job there but you were really in a hurry and a bit puzzled by it . You put a little more labor than needed . You should have bought the angle bar in one piece , mark the lengths you needed THEN mark 90 degree cuts on the inside lower part of the bar and after cutting only the bottom part just bend the bar and make your shape . It would be much Sturdier and smooth looking .

Thanks for comments and suggestions. I didn’t do it that way because I used pre-slotted channel and was concerned the holes wouldn’t line up when bent at 90 degree angles. If I did it again I wouldn’t use pre slotted channel - would just drill my own holes - and make it the way you describe.

I like and am thinking of something similar with my Prinsu rack. What about laying the can flat?

Thought about this. More aerodynamic for sure. Just make sure the gas can doesn’t leak. Also consider the comments here about the bolt heads.

You need to lock that down. Thieves will get to it. I had $700 worth of gas and gas cans taken from in front of my house. A ratcheting rubber thing is not going to be enough.

Smart design. Thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity is there a knot name for the way you tied off the ratchet strap loose end?

Lol! Somebody could make a killing making a product to tie up loose ratchet straps! As for me… not sure of the technical name. I always called it a half hitch… two of them in opposing directions.

Those nut-ends...they'll eventually rub a hole in the jerrycan, or even punch a hole with a heavy jolt. Giving you a fun petrol shower. Potential DIY disaster
@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad
@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad 2 года назад
They’re cut flush with the nuts and don’t touch the jerry can.

@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad My experience is that stuff jiggles alot on the roof. I wouldn't take this risk. But, it's your funeral, I mean, cremation *shrug*

Fast, simple and probably works for your light duty use, but $36 bucks..?!? Sorry to be a hater but you can build something sturdier with less than $5 of scrap steel angle irons, mount on some light duty side tow hooks (another $5 for a set of 4 at Home Depot) and loop the racthet hooks around them so the strap pressure is more evenly applied. The hooks you're having there is going thru the wall of a thin aluminum piece and your attachment bolts should probably be flipped downwards. But again, your set up probably works for mild use and not spend $100+ bucks on the other nonsense sold online lol. Also the idea of having anything heavy on top of your vehicle is also baffling, I see overland guys with 33" tires on top, or rooftop tents, jerry cans, rotopax, large pelican cases on roof..Only to go camping twice a year . the "OvErLandIng" movement has caused a lot of confused men making youtube videos, not you specifically tho

Yeah - heavy roof racks are not a great idea offroad!

Nice COPY of an original NATO jerry can. The originals have the welded seam running in a trench around the can to protect it. So you did a nice project, but I would recommend to replace the can by an original one.
