There are a lot of kayak modification videos out there (including a few I have made) and your diy bimini is among the cleanest, simplest I have found on youtube. It really looks like it belongs as part of your yak; not just slapped on. Impressive!
Good point. A hinge at the front point and some way to snap the cross bar on and off at the back. It would make storing and traveling a lot easier too.

Awesome idea, I cannot wait to try something like this on my own kayak. It is a two person kayak so I would try a rectangular shape and see how it performs.
@degreethis Yes, you're right. After lowering it, it did block my vision quite a bit more, but didn't block much more sun on my legs. So leaving it higher is better. It still blocks sun on my upper body and head. I think I'll have to make a version that stays wide all the way up to get better leg protection.
How did that work? I was thinking that same thing while watching. Also, noticed the Ohio WC sticker, where is that body of water? I'm in NE Ohio and usually yak west branch but always looking for new spots.

That is a great idea, the sun can really beam down even on days that are not so hot but on the open space of water it really cooks the skin. I wish there was a way to adapt this for inflatable kayaks as well. Any suggestions from anyone…viewers included would be wonderful. Thanks.
Great video for 6 years ago...kudos on the ingenuity... but i think a really really big brimmed hat and long sleeved shirt and some good sunblock would do the same. I've seen some people pop up a beach umbrella once they are sitting out there fishing and take it down ( or use it as a sail) when under way to/from shore.
Looks like you might be able to use it as a sail too. We don't hear much about using sails on Kayaks, but it was all the preferred rage at the turn of the previous century.
You are much more visible on the water.. If you paint the pvc poles with a UV protection paint, it will keep them from getting brittle and snapping. Very creative way to use your brain.. :)
Nice Idea, especially for those hot steamy days when a hat and sunglasses arent actually helping you keep cool. You should design a version that is stowable, this prototype seems quite bulky and could be a nightmare if the wind increases.
sweet idea and something i'd like to do but yeah. 2 main problems being fighting a fish and if the wind picks up it'll act like a sail. Also storage I suppose as it's quite long but you could probably use the paddle holder on the other side your paddle is on.
Very clean looking, if it were a little wider I think it'd be even better for sun coverage. Bet it would be easy enough to design a bikini top that doubled as a sail, get some shade, when you're ready to return, sail away. We're so limited on room with having top and a sail.
@MrFriedolays I'm no expert, but I think the sit-on-top kayaks are better for fishing. You also want one that is wider vs. the long streamlined versions. There is a trade-off though when you go with a wide kayak. It is much more stable so you don't feel like you could tip as you shift your weight around casting and pulling in fish. But when it comes to paddling, it is more difficult to keep a straight path in the water, and you'll have to paddle harder to keep up with a narrow kayak.
+knight2255 I got it from Walmart but found it also at Joann fabrics but Walmart was a better price it was a nylon fabric with a rubber backing so it'd be waterproof, yes is does need to be sewn to make a sleeve for the cpvc pipe. If you do this make sure you have the cross brace and the paracord to make it steady. These are great to have especially in the summer time if you don't want to be in the sun but want to be on the water
not really regarding stability. the width is not the only factor. a kayak that is longer and narrower will be just as stable as one that is shorter and wider. it is the area of contact with water that in the end determines kayak's overall stability. thus both equal each other out. neat idea with the bimini, very well done
Oh, and another thought ... it would be nice if this would fold up as tightly as possible in case the wind came up and it became a problem ... then it could be slid under the bungees on the side ... your present design looks as though the front 3 joined 45s prevent this from folding up into a tight tube ... don't get me wrong, though, this is a great little design ...
In the 2nd ride of the video, you lowered the front (now connected to the side handles)... it seems that it blocks a lot more view from the front of the boat. For visibility, which way did you like better?
in nautical circles, rope is the raw material you buy in a store ON LAND.....once given it's duties it is now a LINE.... bowline springline or towline for e.g. don't get these backwards or I will be there
What about gusting wind? You guys never show failures or your DIY limitations. A moving in front not forecasted could easily blow you over if a gust then sustained wind blows in. How are you set up to transport this if down?

Nice job that's another thing kayaks really need a shade top. ,,I built something close to that in 2007 but the way I had it rigged I could use it for a down wind sail or Bimini,, same traingle shape just rigged differently you can check out on aaa winks channel I have been thinking about making a top for my kayak and you joged my memory thank you

Plus, I am wondering if I can use the bimini top while I'm fishing on a kayak. I wanted to know if anyone (viewers included) have even tried this while fishing.
