DIY Kayak Livewell: Circulates fresh water! Livewell for under $50!! DIY at home! This DIY kayak livewell uses a water tight dog food container (20LB, approx 5.5-6 gallons) with a livewell pump, simple drain, and a simple battery box. To build this kayak live well you only need a few basic tools, a little bit of PVC, a 6v battery, a container, and a pump!
Update: The pump outlet is 3/4in but I found this is just too much water coming in when running constantly. I adapted it down to 1/2 with a hose barb so it goes from the pump to 1/2 and into the tank. The original 3/4 inlet is now a second 3/4 drain. So the water comes in through 1/2 and drains automatically from two 3/4 drains. This keeps the level right where I want it.

I bought two live well check valves and the squeeze bulb primer from Amazon.. Per other Videos the primer pump only works well with the two check valves installed. I also used the better pump. I plan to use my scupper holes like the hobie. I will post how well it works once I get a chance to test it out

I had tried something like that post-this video and it never did work right. Of all the ones I have seen the most reliable seems to be the Hobie one, but with a modification installed. I cannot remember who made it, but it was basically a modified primer bulb that a guy had built and offered for sale. I believe it eliminated any back flow towards the water source when priming. As for the one I made here, I still use it when I need to carry live bait and don't wish to drag a minnow bucket. Now that I have a motor on the kayak the minnow bucket is not as annoying to tow. I have always been really happy with this live well though and I like that I can use it bank fishing also.

Very nice build and good job making it work when it didn’t do what you wanted the 1st time

i have a similar build. THE PRIMER ball sucks it, period. what i did to prime my pump is i just have a piece of flex hose and i mannually suck water just once and then detach the hose. super simple and keeps the pumped primed. good build love all the thought gone into it

That's a good idea! It's been a while since I built it and experimented and filmed the video, so I'm not sure if this was included - but these days the pump is outside of the livewell and I just hang it over the side of the kayak in the water.

Common misconception is that these pump suck up water, they DON'T. Drain/Outlet needs to be bigger than the inlet. One way valve is really great in the inlet tube thru the scupper

The Hobie one will suck it up from the scupper, this particular pump design just isn’t made for that. I did have a one way valve in the inlet tube at one point but it was causing problems. Thanks for watching!

I don't know where the 50$ comes from since the water tight dog food container alone cost more than 40$ container 40$ battery 25$ pump 20$ adapters and tubing 10$ dry box 10$ switch, connector and cabling 10$ This thing cost well over a 100$.

I had the vast majority of it, and the container was $15 👍

where did you get the plumbing that is secured to the tank?
@PenguinOutdoors

Hey thanks for watching! Hope you will consider subscribing if you have not already. All of the plumbing and fittings for the livewell came from Lowes. You could also find it on Amazon, and at pretty much any farm and home store in the section that has parts for sprayers, and by the plumbing.

What is the same of the container?

Hi thanks for watching! If you are not already a subscriber I'd appreciate it if you were! The container is a pet food container, specifically found in the dog food section of places like farm and home stores. Walmart may have stuff like this as well. I am not sure what the brand is or anything. I built it a while back but I believe it is a 7 gallon tank. They are usually sold in pounds since it is for dog food, but google helped me convert that to approximate gallons.

What size container is this?
@PenguinOutdoors
@PenguinOutdoors 2 года назад
Hey thanks for watching! This is a 20LB container, they sell them based on pounds not gallons. It's roughly 5.5-6 gallons? I'm guessing but confident its over 5 gallons. I did not realize this wasn't addressed in the video so I'll add it to my subscription. Thanks for catching that. Don;t forget to subscribe!
